The MAC and other smaller leagues are mentioned in this press release from ESPN. It doesn't say anything about ESPN3, but it does mention the new ESPN app, which I'm assuming will be replacing WatchESPN.

I'm guessing what this means is if you're a cable cutter, good luck getting ESPN programming without having to go through this $4.99 paywall. I'd like to know how this affects providers like Hulu, Sling, etc.

This impacts everyone right? This replaces ESPN3 which was free. Now to watch Ohio basketball games, we'll have to pay $5.99 per month, correct?

I think so! I know people didn't think the MAC would make a new agreement with ESPN without checking into this first but that's the impression I'm getting. And the press release doesn't mention the major conferences, so I'm going to assume this is going to have a huge impact on how we stream Ohio Bobcat events.

I'm okay paying $4.99/month for Bobcat basketball and football if I have to.

It doesn't make it entirely clear but it sounds like it. Basically it sounds like it's just paying $4.99/month for pretty much what was "free" on ESPN3, maybe with a few added features of internet-only broadcasts of some pro games. Of note, internet providers had to contract with ESPN to be able to give ESPN3 access, so I'm sure everyone paid for it indirectly before but I'm also sure there's no price cuts coming from those internet providers with that seemingly no longer going to be the case.

Deadspin is interpreting it that way as well.

https://deadspin.com/espns-new-4-99-a-month-service-is-ta...

“Most ESPN+ programming will be new and additive, not available to our existing nets (including ESPN3),” a spokesperson for ESPN told Deadspin. “ESPN3 will still have thousands of live events and, while some content will shift to ESPN+, we will actively program live events across both platforms.”

Five bucks is okay. Heck, I spent 7 to sign up to Marshall's streaming service just to watch the one preseason basketball game there.

What will be interesting to see is if all or most non-cable games will go through this service, and if they will be available for a time on-demand. Over the past few seasons I missed a couple games that were on CBS sports, and was unsuccessful at figuring out how to see them after the fact. ESPN3 always kept the vids available for later viewing.
