I'll take the win! Ohio played pretty solid for the most part outside of a few stretches. Great game by AJ Clayton who carried the team with a career-high 34 points.

Atrocious.

Worst thing that ever happened was any report of connecting Clayton with NBA draft boards.

Going to be tough to win games in 2024-2025 if the Pre-Season MAC Player of the Year doesn’t start knocking down the 3-ball.

Glad I could inspire #23 today. Somebody is reading Bobcat Attack…haha. Reverse jinx always works. Let’s keep it rolling.

I'm not saying these guys can't ever shoot threes but you can't convince me this team wouldn't be better if these guys identified as paint first guys. I'm trying to compliment them...they are both excellent in the paint and play bigger than their size.

Started I believe 4 for 5 from 3. 3 for 21 since. 18 of 26 attempts from our forwards.

I do agree that those two can take a couple of ill-advised threes every now and then, but I think there's something that we need to remind ourselves of. Those two taking threes at a high rate really opens up driving lanes for other players and forces the defense to know where they are at on the perimeter at all times. I know that's kind of new age basketball thinking, but when you have guys that can shoot being guarded by the other team's bigger players, that forces those big guys to do more than patrol the paint. If Hadaway only took 1 3PA and Clayton took 3 3PA instead of their 10 attempts per game, that would make it even more difficult to find driving lanes and/or post up opportunities for other. Even Searls taking 1-2 per game with Clayton on the floor has to keep defenses from full on doubling Clayton in the post. I'm sure that balance is something the group is always trying to fine tune and strike the perfect balance of inside/outside shots for those guys, but I don think we probably oversimplify the argument if we are just looking at their shot percentages from 2 vs from 3.

Also not saying I always agree with this style of play, but it's pretty clear to me that our roster has been built with this style of play in mind.

In other words, get your asses beat on the boards most games and hope your shots are falling.

That's the AJ Clayton we all want and need!

The Jax Pav lines are starting to resemble the Rondo lines during his prime! I love it!

Hopefully we can clip some Ivy tomorrow, if that's how it pans out.

Pav with back-to-back double doubles. I think we're gonna be ok guys/gals.

great game obviously by clayton. misleading stats for Pav. better today than yesterday but he still spends too much of the clock dribbling, he’s caught inside with limited options and beside his turnovers often doesn’t put his teammates in good position with his passes. Elliot gave some good minutes. team played under control much less frenetic. best point guard news is mitchell should return on
a minute restriction on sunday.

If by "we're gonna be ok" you mean we just need Clayton to go off for 34 to comfortably beat teams ranked in the mid 200's or below (to be fair that's 2/3 of the MAC) - then yeah I guess so.

We got a W when we needed a W. Long long long way to go.

Torvik has us going 19-12, 12-6 in MAC after today's game.

Is that "okay"? Maybe.

I would say they took a step in the right direction. Let’s see what they bring on Sunday. It’s a long season and this group has a long way to go. There is hope.

After our 2 best defensive performances, both in Myrtle (not sure it has as much to do with us and more to do with the opponents, but still facts)

Tempo adjusted defensive efficiency is now 106.4, #219 in the nation (up from 107.5 and #242)
Our effective FG% defense is 58.0%, #342 in the nation (up from 62.8% and #358)
And our 3pt% defense is 47.8%, #364 in the nation (still dead last in the country, but an improvement from 53.7% and #364)

Updated Defensive Box Plus Minus
1. Shereef Mitchell (+1.5)
2. Aidan Hadaway (+0.4)
3. AJ Clayton (-0.4)
4. Vic Searls (-0.4)
5. Ajay Sheldon (-0.6)
6. Elmore James (-0.8)
7. AJ Brown (-1.8)
8. Jackson Paveletzke (-2.9)
9. Elijah Elliott (-4.1)
10. Ayden Evans (-4.5)

Observation to note

AJ Brown might be considered the league's best NBA prospect.
He might be the highest rated recruit on our team.
He has size and length.
You can see the athleticism.

He provided glimpses of what he could be as a true freshman.
His Soph year was derailed with injuries.
It's still early in his 3rd year.

But...

Outside of his ability to score the basketball (82 pts - averaging 13.7 ppg this year, 431 pts in his career - averaging 10.5 ppg)

He's kind of the OPPOSITE of a stat sheet stuffer (i.e. he does nothing else really well to help the team outside of scoring).

He has 114 rebounds in 41 career games (2.8 per game). For a guy who is 6'4 with long arms I sure would like to see that number up around 4-5 per game.

He has 34 career assists (to 35 turnovers), 33 steals and 9 blocked shots (all well under 1 per game)

And his defense is...not good.

What a world of difference it would be for this team to a) get Reef back and b) get AJ Brown to be more than a one-dimensional player.

Add that to "good" AJ Clayton, and P.S. play Vic Searls more - all he does is do good things - plus it gives us more size and allows Clayton to play his natural PF position (insert this is why Ayden Evans needs minutes so he can be the bench rotation guy behind those two here and there) - and you just might start to see us resembling what many thought we could be in the pre-season.

I'll agree that he over dribbles sometimes and could kick to the perimeter after his drive a dribble or two sooner than he does, but he had 10 assists and 2 turnover today, I'm not sure how you could say he's not putting teammates in good positions with those stats. He has played much better this week and we are in good shape with him running the show.

All in all I'd agree with the sentiment with everyone else. We beat a bad team, so it's okay to feel good about it but we should stay cautiously optimistic. Still lots of things to get better at but we have seen some improvement and guys getting more comfortable.

I also wouldn't hate seeing Searls get more time over Hadaway, maybe even starting. I think his interior presence with Clayton on the floor makes us a little less predictable on offense. And I think Hadaway's energy can make just as big of an impact in 20-25 minutes as he can in 30-35 minutes.

100% agree and you beat me to it, but Searls and Clayton are great together, play Evans 8-10 minutes behind Searls and play 10 minutes with Clayton at the 5 with Hadaway. And Hadaway fills whatever minutes are left when Clayton sits or whenever else Searls needs to sit.

Yes...those are the obvious downsides. You lose some size and rely a little more on jump shooting. But again you might be missing the positives of playing that way. Playing with 5 shooters on the floor does open the basket area for drives and post touches.

That's not too far from where we were projected at the beginning and mid of last season either. Conference play hasn't even started. We looked shaky much of last season before going on a tear at the end and nearly winning the conference.

Of the last 26 years, someone has won with 3+ losses 22 times. 3.5 average losses.

Do I wish we were 6-0? Certainly. Would I feel different about starting conference play? Maybe, but we won't know where we truly stand until 1/17 @ Akron.

The reality is we have 11 exhibition games in which to gear up for conference play. Anything before that is just a distraction from Timmy bringing home some hardware.

My brother, you're talking about misleading stats in a game we won and he had 2 turnovers to 10 assists.

In the last two games he has 25 points, 21 assists and 6 turnovers.

I can live with damn near 4/1 assist ratio all day.

watching here in myrtle he got guys the ball with time running out or after they had been open and the d had caught up. think we will be much better with him running the 2s. he will also continue to struggle against quicker point guards. having talked to bradley guys they were going to put aggressive ball pressure on him.

hopefully sunday will be more like today than yesterday.

as an aside USF size would have given us fits.

Matches the stats and my observations so far. Pavs would be a great backup PG to Reef. My starting five would be PG - Reef, SG - AJ Brown, SF - Hadaway, PF - Clayton, C - Searls. Let the 2s be PG - Pavs, SG - Sheldon, SF - Elmore, PF - none, C - Evans. Elliott in mop-up time and Burris TBD.

Biggest problem with that lineup is asking Hadaway to guard MAC SF's which are defacto 3rd guards. Probably not ideal.

Yes it would have. However Middie just beat them 95-88.

That's an upset.

And makes our L look a little better.

I've thought about Hadaway at the 3 also, but agree that it's probably too slow of a lineup 3-5 to play in the MAC on the defensive end. And if we played those 3 big guys together and cut out a guard, it really squeezes the rotation for the guards (Out of Pav, Reef, AJ Brown, James, Sheldon who are you taking minutes away from to give Hadaway time at the 3?). As much as they've struggled so far, I don't see Boals abandoning those guys to try this. Who knows though, could be worth a shot. Would be much better rebounding while still having shooting threats through most of the lineup.

The other issue I'd see here is having Pav and Sheldon on the floor together a lot. We obviously don't have these types of stats to tell if this is true or now but I feel like those two on the floor together would be a nightmare on the defensive end. No size or strength, and quickness is lacking compared to James or Mitchell.

Yea, I’m not sure where the knock on Pav during this tourney is coming from. He could dribble less sure, but we’ve been clamoring for a true facilitator since Preston and Pav is looking for teammates before his own shot. Neither Hunter or nor Sears had 10 assists once in their careers and Pav just went back to back games.

I’m also on the start Searls with AJC train. The latter and Hadaway favor the outside more than inside (even though today is the latest example of how solid they can be in the paint) that it just makes more sense to break them up and free Evans already.

While what you stated is factually true, I'd posit that Pavs will continue to be a great distributing PG as long as he keeps getting guarded by slow white dudes under 6'0 - because he's more talented than them.

What happens when that isn't the case is where I have my question marks.

Not to mention his defensive liabilities.

But again - maybe it's just his back that's limiting him so far early. Maybe he's going to get healthy and surprise me.

Considering not a single white dude under 6’0 logged minutes for (or exists on Portland’s and MTSU’s roster for that matter) either opponent, I’d say this is an incorrect opinion.

I’m with you on his defense being a shortcoming, however.

Swap Elmore with Hadaway and I'm with you. Having "Captain Chaos" coming off the bench as a 6th-man instant energy guy would seem to suit his game (and might keep him out of foul trouble more).

The problem with EJ4 is he's also a terrible defender. He's either out of position and chasing/reaching/fouling or doing the ole.

Hadaway is a much better defender, albeit statistically against bigs and not against wings like I alluded above. If I HAD to swap a 3rd guard into the lineup
I'd probably swap Sheldon into the 2 guard spot (knowing I'm giving up D - but hoping he's hitting from 3) and moving AJ Brown to the 3.

For kicks and giggles I broke down how I'd distribute the minutes (and in before SBH or Billy offer up Jeff's email address - yes I'm a dude on the internet, Jeff Boals both knows more than me and gets paid more than me - so he can do what he wants)

PG: Reef - 32, Pavs - 8
SG: Brown - 16, Sheldon - 16, Pavs - 5, EJ4 - 3
SF: Hadaway - 15, Brown - 13, EJ4 - 12
PF: Clayton - 33, Hadaway - 7
C: Searls - 25, Evans - 10, Clayton - 5

Total Minutes
Clayton - 38
Mitchell - 32
Brown - 29
Searls - 25
Hadaway - 22
Sheldon - 16
James - 15
Paveletzke - 13
Evans - 10

Something like that.

Then again, I'm big on defense and rebounding being the winning formula.
