How many minutes do we really need from Carter Reese?

There are 80 minutes available in the backcourt and 40 at the 3.

Last year this is how it broke down, bearing in mind we didn't actually have a 3 on the roster and played more 3 guard lineups:

-- Pavs averaged 36.7
-- Sheldon 30.9
-- Kelly 26.6
-- Elliot 21.5 (but only appeared in 13 games)
-- Connors 11.5
-- Burris 10 (in 24 games)

If you go 30 for both transfer guards and 20 for Brogan all minutes are accounted for. And that's before you even account for Burris minutes or Bowens getting any run.

On the wing you have Ledegen, three guard lineups with D'Augustino/Mitchell/Brogan (or Burris), Kuany able to play there a bit, and Mosley who was recruited as a 3 but will probably play more 4.

Reese is still way down the bench:

Frontcourt:
Simmons
Dusan
Kuany
Mosley
Icke

Backcourt:
D'Augustino
Mitchell
Ledegen
Brogan
Burris
Bowens
Reece

Good breakdown and probably an accurate way of looking at it. I think we could use another rotational guard, but this also could be the final roster.

Our rotations have hardly ever been that deep overall. Bearing foul trouble, I suspect KDA and Mitchell will put up Pavs/Sheldon minutes. If no one else is brought in, I think the key is hoping (sighs) a combo of Burris/Bowens can spell the KDA/Mitchell/Che trio just enough.

Insert the Michael Scott Gif yelling "NO"

Reese was a 3-year starter who scored over 700 points. It may have been at ONU but let's not pretend he is a typical walk-on.

I think that makes him exactly a typical walk-on. A fine basketball player at the right level, no doubt. If we're relying on a walk-on for minutes he's either good enough for a scholly or our roster is in shambles. He played zero minutes last year that I recall so I don't think he was a monster being held out, he likely doesn't translate to this level for whatever reason. Nothing against the young man, but that seems like the reality of the situation to me.

Our depth at guard is a concern. It's not a big concern if everyone stays healthy and out of trouble. That's a huge leap of faith to take.

If Boals had been at the top os his game, he could have had Quinn back last year as he returned to OHIO to finish his degree after a year playing basketball for Ohio Wesleyan. Oh, the opportunity missed!

I heard Boals tried but Jon Scheyer's interest scared him off. I knew we should have backed up the Burrito Buggy before he blew up. Ah well, another Boals whiff I guess.

Happy 4th ;).

I saw a judge in Ohio ruled Thursday in favor of 24 plaintiffs who would be going into their 5th year that had not previously redshirted....Elmore James agent tweeted he was impacted by the ruling and looking for a place to play now. Seems like there are going to be some 5th year players looking for a home this year, maybe we find that guard depth we need yet.

Journeyman high quality wing MJ Collins reported to be headed to Cincinnati.

I am just interested in playing time. Mosley stuck around for a reason. I am guessing he showed potential enough for the staff to tell him he'd get a shot. Burris and Kuany as well. But Moek intrigues me. Bowens seems like a redshirt candidate for sure.

As for the guards, there is a ton there with Mitchell and D'Augustino leading the way but Brogan should get some run. Ledegen is interesting unto himself as he seems like the only true "point forward) while Dusan and Simmons will be banging inside.

Shabamon -- outside of being a small backcourt, what are your reservations on the KDA/Mitchell combo? I've posted in other threads, but Mitchell had as many win shares as Pavs last season. I still think Pavs was the better player, but that margin is smaller than it appears.

1) I'm concerned we don't have anyone who can defend a physical/athletic guard. Anyone who has a Pete Suder or Morgan Safford can just feed them the ball and they'll probably get a good look and/or get to the foul line. Because we don't have that, we don't have the roster flexibility to have a "defensive lineup".

2) Numbers depth. Every year, someone gets hurt. Sometimes multiple people get hurt. I feel pretty good about the frontcourt depth, but not so much the guard depth. Can Carter Reese realistically provide anything?

If no bridges are burned, I would feel optimistic about the season bringing back Elmore James.

I'll say this...this new era sure makes the month of November exciting. Seems the norm every year now is "well I guess we will see how this turns out" and you show up in November hoping to be impressed.

I like our paper team at the moment, if Elmore wants to come back - sure, buddy - but he left for a reason. I don't know the reason, but leaving Boals in the lurch when AJ left, to go to a conference "rival"... Ouch. Boals isn't really known for his forgive and forget side. This man loves a dog house and no one in history has ever been able to escape it. Maybe he can play the mistake card, I want to graduate from here, etc etc but I'd be surprised to see EJ on campus again.

Valid concerns Shabs. That said, recent activity of the staff seems to be focused on 27/28 recruits. I hope we're not finished adding to this season's roster, but there's a chance we might be. If we do, I feel like it's going to come out of left field.

A legitimate concern that we seem to have every year.

I've seen numerous pics on social media from practice but haven't noticed any of Ledegen, Makitan, or Icke. Are they with the team yet?

I remember that Kuany had visa challenges. Maybe that's the delay.

His video looks great….but it’s offense only. Hopefully his defense can be coached up.

He shoots the three ball and although listed as a shooting guard I think he could play some point.
