I was at first worried this might lead to a KDA or Kolton exit. However, Kolton commented “yessirrr” and KDA commented “Go Time!!”. Nice to know we have team players. What an awesome development, but please let’s not start three 6’1 guys again.

Hopefully all the international guys are in tow as well. We’re just missing Siebe and Marin on campus from what it sounds like.

KDA and Jack are arguably the best 1-2 in the league. Granted, they've never played a single second together, but on paper you have two of the best G5 PG's from last season now on the same team. An incredible stroke of luck we have found ourselves after a real poop show of a year.

Kolton first off the bench. He actually probably won't be, but could likely play 6th man minutes. Which is huge now that Jack doesn't have to play 35 minutes a game (hopefully). And Jack can now re-assume true PG1 status, with KDA shifting to the natural 2 and really running the offense with the plethora of big wings and a solid 4/5 with Dusan and Simmons. Kuany, Siebe, Che, etc etc, etc run around and get buckets. Safety net in front of and behind you. Solid.

Ultimately, I don't think the rest of the guys are affected *that much*, and this is clearly better situation for all to have a veteran like Jack run the offense for a team that is mostly thrown together the last few weeks and to have that reliance and assurance he can and has run this team at a high level - the biggest hurdle remains allocation of minutes, Boals putting it together and allowing an 8-10 man rotation to develop.

I was bullish on this euro all-star team before, putting Jack back in the lead role... this is a Top 3 team. I'd love an outsiders view, because on paper... call me crazy... I think they get some #1 votes.

Overall yea, I'd agree Pavs return doesn't impact really anyone other KDA and Kolton. Kolton slides to the bench. Probably not what he initially thought he was signing up for, but hey, it's possible Boals let both him and KDA know Pavs was applying for a waiver and could be back.

Regardless, great problem to have. It was an exciting/intriguing group before and it's even more so after Pavs.

I'm sure they both knew, and have been playing pickup games with Pavs involved all summer.

Very good educated guess! But, why make it that simple and straightforward, when we can engage in idle speculation about potentially wounded egos, and bad vibes, and basketball karma? You take all the fun out of it.

Maybe a hockey line change approach.

If there is one thing Boals has proven in his tenure at Ohio is that he will play 7-8 guys consistently, not 9-10. I would be shocked if he changed his approach.

I was going to ask if Pavs has even picked up a basketball since April.....and if he's even close to being in playing shape. Then I remembered what Simmons looked like last November. Guess he can play himself into shape too.

The guy doing NBA tryouts with the Bucks, Knicks, Cavs, and Mavs was probably in OK shape this Summer

Yep.

Will remain one of the hurdles. He's more likely to run 7 guys with 2-3 entirely different guys on and off the bench from game to game than run 9-10 at thinner minutes consistently, and boy do I hate that.

I hate to keep saying "on paper", but honestly - on paper - has Boals ever had a team that appeared to be this deep? We're not talking about Fisher, Kuany struggling to get minutes w/ Kelly finding his footing. We're talking 24 year old European pros. I mean, I really don't know much outside what we've seen in highlight tapes, but you gotta think the learning curve needed for D1 basketball has significantly tapered off and these boys are ready to run. I think our floor is significantly higher than in years past based just on the level of experience alone. But maybe I'm just overshooting it. I don't know man, but I'm almost as excited as I've ever been for a season. And coming off one of our recent worst... overly optimistic might be true. I'd love to see them use Ohio State as an early season measuring stick again.

You've captured my thoughts quite well. I've gone from a leader of the "Fire Boals" crowd to thinking he's probably the MAC COY the year next year with the talent he's assembled.

[Philosophically, I think COY awards should not go to the coach with the most victories, but to the coach who got the most with the least talent and/or the most trying circumstances. But, in reality, that's not the way the award is usually given at any level. Case in point, switching sports, to me Jack Lengyel will always be the COY for 1971 with but two victories in the first post-crash season at Marshall.]

Don't get me wrong, I like what we've done this offseason. And I'm glad that Boals seems to have deliberately made a shift in strategy.

But I think this team still has a ton of questions, virtually no continuity or minutes logged together, and the how the pieces fit is still very much an open question.

To me, the biggest concerns are:

1) Lack of size in the backcourt and on the wing. We have three small guards that expect to see a lot of time and at least one of them (Pavs) struggles a lot defensively. No idea how KDA or Mitchell project there, but we're undersized. We have a lot of eggs in the Siebe basket -- if he underwhelms or is prone to foul trouble or whatever, this could become a serious flaw.

2) Simmons stamina & frontcourt depth. Simmons is an excellent frontcourt player, but last year only played 27 minutes a game despite how thin our frontcourt was. Icke is big, but has played exactly 0 minutes of college basketball. Kuany is long and will get minutes in the frontcourt, and I'm bullish on Mosly and Dusan. But there's a lot of ifs here. Somebody pointed out that the expectation around the team is that Kuany is starting at the 4; if that's a reflection on Dusan, that makes me a little nervous.

3) Boals ball. Our offense struggles to create good looks and is stagnant a lot of the time. We need to make sure we have a coach who can actually get enough out of his talent.

The expectation of Kuany starting at the 4 came from a student reporter. His reasoning was the similar profiles of Dusan and Simmons to not start them together. I'm choosing to take his opinion respectfully, but also with a grain of salt.

My only concern with Pavs return is Boals defaulting to starting the 3 of them together -- eventually. KDA was a minus defender last year, Kolton was a plus. Nonetheless, valid point.

1) Is this not one of the biggest teams in OU history? The 2/3 guys are huge. Yes, Jack is a lil fella. But he's 6'2" (generous, but not exactly 5'10"). KDA is smaller, but they don't need to be big. They play big. Kolton was never starting here. He'll be a nice shooter off the bench. They will not start 1-2-3 that would be hilarious. And bizarre. Regardless, Look at this basket of 2-3 depth:

Petkov - 6'4"
Burris - 6'5"
Che - 6'5"
Jordie - 6'6"
-
Siebe - 6'7"
Kuany - 6'9"

This wouldn't be undersized if we were the Cleveland Cavaliers.

I'm guessing BLSS's comment is more tied to proven size at this level, rather than the size that exists on the roster. Kolton was for sure going to start had Pavs not returned. He had more Win Shares than Pavs last year. I think it's been underestimated how good he was last year. More than just a shooter.

Burris has yet to prove anything, Jordie is a freshman, and Kuany has flashed. I'm all about the international guys as well, but we have to see how they transition.

That said, numbers are in our favor of someone emerging. At least I'd like to think so.

I think we have a pretty different perspective on who is going to be seeing minutes in the rotation. I'd be pretty surprised if our top three guys minutes-wise in the backcourt aren't Pavs, KDA, and Mitchell. I'd love to be wrong there because it would mean Che or Petkov steps up.

Kuany also really isn't a 3. He shot 24% from three and I think the bulk of his minutes will come at the 4/5.

What have we heard about Moek Icke (sp?) that would lead to think that a guy over 7 feet tall would not be a rotation guy?**

**Without bringing up past tall guys who didn't do anything. They are irrelevant.

(especially Marin Bota)

He just hasn't played much actual basketball for two years now. Part of that was health issues, but if you read his scouting reports, he was always a project, and there have always been questions about his mobility.

My only concern with Pavs return is Boals defaulting to starting the 3 of them together -- eventually. KDA was a minus defender last year, Kolton was a plus. Nonetheless, valid point.

Pure speculation but I think Mitchell ends up being the 6th man in the Shammah Scott role that he played for Akron the last few years. The Mitchell/Reef/Hunter trio from a few years back could work in certain games because all 3 were very good to elite defenders for being guards in the MAC. There were still games where size canceled out that ability but with this guard trio I don’t think any of the 3 will be good enough defenders to play them at the same time. The one guard we have that I think will be an elite defender is Brogan, whose defensive metrics and steal/block rates have been consistently very high. If his offensive game can develop I think there’s a chance he ends up getting some minutes in big games.

(especially Marin Bota)

He just hasn't played much actual basketball for two years now. Part of that was health issues, but if you read his scouting reports, he was always a project, and there have always been questions about his mobility.

Do you have any of the scouting reports you share? I couldn’t find much when he committed. Only video clips. He moves better than I thought he would given his size. First glance seems further along than Wiz was.

I do agree Kolton will be the 6th man now. Totally cool with a Shammah Scott like role for him.

I tried a search on the dreaded A.I. and got this survey of what's out there:

Physical Profile & Skill SetSize & Length: Imposing 7'1" frame with high-level standing reach that alters passing lanes and deters drivers naturally.Offensive Versatility: Possesses soft shooting touch, perimeter face-up ability, and comfort playing outside the paint rather than relying purely on explosive above-the-rim athleticism.Passing & IQ: High basketball IQ with good court vision out of the high post and pick-and-roll situations, utilizing his height to see over defenses.Rebounding: Instinctive rebounder who uses length and positioning effectively to secure boards inside

Areas of Question / DevelopmentMobility & Agility: Primary questions center on lateral quickness and functional fluidity moving defensively against faster, modern collegiate pick-and-roll sets.Physical Strength: Needs to continue filling out his slender frame to absorb contact from heavier traditional-low-post bangers.Rust/Action Time: Missed significant on-court playing time over two seasons at Rhode Island while undergoing cardiac rehabilitation, making his immediate transition and conditioning at Ohio a vital tracking point

But the official team roster doesn't have him listed. Did it fall through?

From an additional search of the dreaded A.I.

Coach Jeff Boals will utilize Moek Icke as a highly skilled, versatile big man rather than a traditional, paint-bound center. When announcing his transfer to the Ohio Bobcats, Coach Boals explicitly emphasized that Icke provides the roster with a "skilled big with great size". Based on Boals' tactical history and the current roster construction, Icke's 7-foot-1 size will likely be integrated into the rotation in several specific ways:1. The Dynamic "Five-Out" or "Four-Out" UnlockerCoach Boals prefers an offensive system that relies heavily on movement, spacing, and multi-option sets. Because Icke possesses a soft perimeter shooting touch and elite passing vision for his height, Boals can use him at the top of the key in "four-out, one-in" freelancing sets. He won't just clog the lane; he will act as a high-post hub who can draw opposing centers away from the rim, open up driving lanes for guards, and hit cutters.

2. A Strategic Two-Man Game with Javan SimmonsOhio returns star forward Javan Simmons (6'7", 235 lbs), who plays with tremendous physicality. The Pairing: While Simmons can play the five, matching him alongside the 7'1" Icke gives Ohio a massive, versatile frontcourt. The Dynamic: Simmons can handle the heavier, physical interior battles down low, allowing Icke to float dynamically as a rim protector on defense and a floor spacer on offense.3. Vertical Spacing and Zone-BustingAgainst Mid-American Conference (MAC) teams that deploy zone defenses, a 7-foot-1 player with a high basketball IQ is a lethal weapon. Boals can flash Icke directly into the middle of the zone. From there, Icke's high standing reach allows him to simply look over the defense to skip passes to corner shooters, or turn and shoot over smaller defenders without needing to dribble.

4. High-Value Rim Deterrent in StintsBecause Icke is still building up his physical conditioning and strength after missing extended game action, Boals will likely deploy him in targeted rotation stints. Even in limited minutes, his mere presence anchored in the paint alters driving angles and upgrades Ohio's interior shot-altering metrics significantly compared to previous smaller lineups.
