Ohio scored 11 runs in the first inning and then had to rally in the latter innings at Morehead State today. The Eagles tied it by the 4th inning and scored twice in the 6th to lead. The Bobcats scored five in the seventh to regain the lead, only to give up in the bottom of the seventh with four runs allowed to make it 17-16. The Bobcats scored two each in the eighth and ninth.

Trey Barkman provided the relief pitching Ohio has struggled to get with three scoreless innings to close it out. He walked three and gave up one hit.

Brady Alexander homered in his first college at-bat, homered again later, finished with five hits and drove in seven runs.

That's what I love, a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel!

I watched the first and third games of the series on YouTube and my impression is that, despite some talent issues, there's really no quit in this team. They were down 14-4 in game 1 and scored three late runs and were battling til the end. Then in game 3 they chipped away at the Chippewas' eight-run lead and exploded for seven in the seventh for the win.

We will get by.

Is an 8.30 ERA good? What if I told you that was the TEAM ERA?! Opponents batting average is up to .329?!?!

I was at Game 1 vs CMU, what really struck me was how few swings and misses Central had. It didn’t seem like our staff was fooling their hitters at all. They’ve lost several games (like the last against Dayton) that they shouldn’t have lost.

On the bright side, the bats have been pretty good.

Hard to know for sure, but if I had to guess, it seems like we seriously lack velocity. The broadcasts don't typically have a radar gun up but college hitters are too good to be fooled unless there is a decent fastball to fall back on, especially using metal bats.

I'm curious about Ethan Stewart from Meigs. So far this year, he's got 3 appearances for 3 innings. Has given up 1 hit, walked 2 and has a strikeout and NO runs. Before he got hurt in HS, he had very good velocity. Went 10 days without an appearance than 5 days. I would like to see him get more run if that's the numbers he's put up in this small sample.

I agree. He was in line to get the win vs Dayton too when Ohio scored four in the 8th after he was able to get the last out in the seventh and followed with a scoreless 8th. Dayton tied it in the 9th with two to go on to extra innings and the win. It is a small sample but we are headed toward plenty of bad large samples. Hoping he’s healthy or on the verge of getting there.

Not that it will help this spring, but I believe pitching help is on its way from central Ohio.

Leading the way is a trio of high school seniors: lefties Colton Landtiser (Pick Central) and Evan Lichtenauer (Licking Valley) and righty Andrew Endres (Hilliard Davidson). Tri-Valley righty Gavin Harrold might be the best of the bunch. Not sure if he was offered last summer on an official visit to campus.

Exactly my thought. And it’s not like he wasn’t a solid recruit and not just some random. Kid was legit coming out of HS.

I don't know much about the kid but I'd agree he should get more innings. I would assume Ethan hasn't performed well in practice unless there is an injury or something he is battling.

He’s pitched lately, spoke with old coach and he’s apparently healthy.

Now on the topic, split with Toledo in the first two.

Smoked Toledo 17-4, then lost the next 2.

2-7 in the MAC...

Thanks, I couldn’t find the 3rd game score Sunday night.

We’ve hit 34 home runs +9 at this point in the season.

I definitely didn't have a 1-0 final on my Ohio baseball bingo card this year. With all the crazy scores lately, I refreshed my phone a few times thinking that 1-0 final in the Toledo finale had to be wrong.

A more typical game the other day. Bobcats lost to Northern Kentucky 8-7. Led 7-3 before the bullpen gave up three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. Offense scored all seven runs in the first four innings. Ben Slanker hit a pair of home runs and now has 11 on the year.

Typical is correct. This exact script plays out more times than it doesn't. Frustrating to say the least.

Drop 2 of 3 at home to EMU, 27 runs allowed in the 2 losses. Hats off to Blake Gaskey for a solid outing in the win, who has actually been the worst of the 3 starters. Gaskey with Boncal & Masters isn't really that bad for the MAC. But the bullpen and spot starters, my goodness.

119 IP, 125 ER (9.45 ERA), 98 BB (& 34 HBP), 83 K.

That BB/K ratio is actually impressive. Not sure I've ever seen that before.

Reminiscent of the great 1963 pitching duel between Juan Marichal and Warren Spahn (look it up), Ohio baseball squeaked by NIU yesterday 17-16.

Another lost series, squeaking out a 17-16 win and dropping the other 2 to NIU 17-7 and 5-0. 35 walks / HBP in the 3 games, this time the 3 starters I showed some love to joined in on the misery as none of them had good outings.

On the bright side, Ben Slanker (sophomore) has been on an absolute tear the last 2 weeks. He now leads the MAC with 14 HR and sports a 1.230 OPS. Given the state of the program, I have to imagine he will head to a P5 team next season unless he truly bleeds green.

Blake Reed has been a Bobcat for 5 years and barely played but has made the most of his chances and found a way into the lineup with a 1.000 OPS.

Wow, Slanker is on fire 🔥. The pitching?!?!? Not so much.
