It keeps all the rivalries intact.

Only downside is we tell our new southern members that half their division rivals are up in Michigan.

The one that fits the worst is BG, but we could just pretend that this was put together by United Methodists who didn't see anything wrong with placing Athens County, which borders the Ohio river, in their West Ohio District! ;-)

That is one of the most bizarre arrangements I have ever seen (as someone who grew up in the West Ohio Conference).

It’s got to be a north-south Break out. Take the schools that are farther south and the schools that are farthest north and put them together.

To get to 16.....how about allowing Belmont to join even though they don't have football, and get Murray St to go FBS? We could raise funds to build stands on the visitor side at Murray.

Honest question: why the push for 16? That is a very large football conference, even leaving aside questions of per school media payout

And what about an interstate from Grand Rivers to Murray?

That would take one heck of a "Go fund me" page, wouldn't it?

EKU is stadium-ready and 2 miles from I-75. No bake sale needed.

WKU would absolutely hate the idea of adding EKU and I'm all for it. More hate. More fun.

I think this news is really cool. 16 years ago when I first started to post here, the first two things I posted about were:

1) would it be possible to run off TOS and hire Rick Byrd from Belmont

2) what would it take to add WKU and MTSU

Obviously the first idea was absurd because Rick would have really been a fish out of water at a state school in a town that really knows how to party. Not that Nashville doesn't consume "things" but Belmont is not really a party haven.

Second: People hinted back then that the (cough-cough) "academics" at WKU at the time were pretty pedestrian and underwhelming to the MAC decision makers. Looks like the reality of college sports in 2021 will change some minds.**

**You have to wonder if the BigTen snub of WVU would have happened in the 2021 world of college sports, would West Virginia and Louisville not have been added to the Big Ten if they had to do it all over again? Syracuse?

The 16 was just a joke. But I'd love to see Belmont in the MAC somehow.

In my first book I depicted Operation Market Garden, including the role of the First Independent Polish Parachute Brigade. In my research it was a thrill to get close to the Arnhem Bridge, later renamed the Lt. Col. John Frost Bridge.

Just as they don't to the Big 12 or whatever it will become next.

And the ACC added Syracuse. Good fit for basketball, but I don't know that much about 'Cuse academics. Isn't it an expensive school for rich kids that can't get into Cornell or Dartmouth? I've never heard it compared to Ivy or Duke or Vandy. (except the price tag?)

I don't think the B1G not adding WVU had anything to do with market OR academics. They may have said that, but really I just think the brass in Columbus and Happy Valley didn't want another school in their territory taking recruits. At the time of realignment, WVU was in the midst of a run where they won at least 8 games every season from 2002 through 2011. Competitively they would have been way better than Maryland or Rutgers. And they added huge value in basketball, where another HOF coach was.

But in the end they shoulda went Syracuse over Rutgers. ACC then adds WVU and then maybe Maryland stays? That four way rivalry between Pitt, WVU, Maryland and VA Tech would have been a lot better for that league as a whole.

It appears that CUSA might be adding NMSU; Liberty and two FCS schools. I read some posts that WKU fans are thinking that staying in CUSA is a better than joining the MAC. Yikes.

I've been following this on the MACbbs site and the WKU fans there seem much more supportive of joining the MAC than the MTSU fans, though both seem to think it preferable to going down with the sinking ship that is C-USA.

Depends on where you look I guess. I visited a WKU fan site and most of those commenting on the matter, in my opinion, seemed pretty pleased about the potential move to the MAC.

I agree. MTSU and WKU are both directly south of central Indiana. Put them both in the West and move Toledo to the East with all the other Ohio schools. That would work out perfectly IMO.

Ooohh I like that.

South: WKU, MTSU, Ohio, Miami...Ball State and BG...and NIU? Idk that may be difficult

How about:

NORTH

NIU
WMU
CMU
BSU
UT
EMU
UB

SOUTH

OHIO
Miami
KSU
Akron
WKU
MTSU
BG

The one that fits the worst is BG, but we could just pretend that this was put together by United Methodists who didn't see anything wrong with placing Athens County, which borders the Ohio river, in their West Ohio District! ;-)

I agree, though, that North South is a stretch, though I kind of like the concept. As usual, the devil is in the details.

I think that's one way. Another would be swapping BSU and BG to get Toledo and BG back in the same division. I don't know how important it is to BSU to be in a division with NIU. My guess is not so important.

NORTH

NIU
WMU
CMU
BGSU
UT
EMU
UB

SOUTH

OHIO
Miami
KSU
Akron
BSU
WKU
MTSU

Another obvious one would be to put WKU and MTSU in the West since they are farther West than anyone but NIU and move Toledo to the East to pair them with BGSU. This might be the best alignment for OU. But WKU and MTSU might not like being in a division with NIU and the Michigan schools and Vice versa. It makes the East more compact geographically than the West.

WEST

NIU
WMU
CMU
EMU
BSU
WKU
MTSU

EAST

OHIO
Miami
KSU
Akron
BGSU
UT
UB

Then there is the Northwestish/Southeastish option

NORTHWEST

NIU
BSU
WMU
CMU
EMU
BGSU
UT

SOUTHEAST

OHIO
Miami
KSU
Akron
UB
WKU
MTSU

I would think it would be one of those four combinations. There will be a lot of internal arguing and compromising because it isn't obvious which it should be.

I like the East/West format above the best. And further, should anyone really care much what WKU and MTSU feel about concerning what the divisions will look like? What about the long standing MAC members? If WKU and MTSU come to the MAC, it's because they both need the MAC more than the MAC needing them. Take care of the main members first and foremost. This is what this conference has been built with and stands on.

I guess the NJ sports media market (Rutgers) is bigger than the Finger Lakes/Winery Country (Syracuse) one.

------------------------------------------------------------

I really don't get the point of having a convoluted league that is part FBS and part FCS. It makes no sense at all. Isn't the point of FCS to be in a league of FCS teams and get a playoff bid and try to win an FCS national title vs other teams that also only have 60 schollies?

Am I taking crazy pills here? FCS teams getting to be kinda/sorta full D-1 without spending the extra 20 schollies for men and adding another 20 for lady sports to stay title-9 compliant? The NCAA is just going to look the other way and put up with this BS? The NCAA is a bunch of cheap streetwalkers if they allow this.

Been to both places, and I'll take the wine country of the Finger Lakes area anytime. Apologies to rpbobcat.

I think the idea is that these FCS schools will transition to FBS.

B10 considers Rutgers to be part of the NYC market. That's the ONLY reason they wanted Rutgers.

The two 1AA schools (Tarleton St and Dixie St) would transition up to 1A, which presumably would mean offering the requisite schollies for football and adding schollies to the women's programs, if need be. They could also cut back elsewhere in the men's program.

But Tartleton and Dixie are both in the WAC, and the plan is for the whole WAC to move up to 1A in the next ten years. Still, I can't see MTSU and WKU fans getting too enthused about adding to their schedule schools in Stephenville, TX (west of Dallas) and St. George, UT that hardly anybody's heard of, plus NMSU. For MTSU and WKU it kind of defeats the point of the original CUSA realignment plans -- to give teams a more regional conference in order to cut travel costs. Instead, of being somewhat in the geographic center of the CUSA, as they are now, both MTSU and WKU would be way out on the northeastern fringe of what would become a conference that's mostly west of the Mississippi. The "Hail Mary" plan to keep the CUSA alive doesn't really have much for them.

According to a WKU fan on the MACbbs site:

"I believe the last word out was that the MAC ADs unanimously approved the move and the Presidents discussing and inviting was a "formality". I suppose it is possible that a Prez goes against the recommendation of their AD, but seems unlikely."

This the first I've heard that the AD's had voted. If that's true, I would agree that this is as close to a "done deal" as you are going to get before it's actually a "done deal." (Kind of poking fun in a friendly way at the way posters on hardfans.com have thrown around the term "done deal.")
