I was fortunate enough to see all those three wins in person. May not see another one anytime soon with the separation we’re seeing now.

I saw the Cats beat Illinois and Penn State in person. It was thrilling, but to be honest neither of those teams we’re having their greatest seasons. What I’m seeing over in the Sun Belt is impressive in comparison. Sorry to be sorry.

That Penn State win deserves an asterisk. First game after they were basically handed the death penalty and their entire roster was given the option to transfer. If I recall, they lost something like 15 starters to transfers that off-season.

That was a good Ohio team, so it's a shame the circumstances were what they were. But the gap between us and the P5 is way bigger than the gap between us and FCS. I would take the field vs. us were we eligible for the FCS national championship, and that's not new to the Tim Albin era.

The Sunbelt is just really impressive conference from top to bottom. They always seem to have a team in the Top 25 or just outside of it.

Coastal Carolina, ULL, Appalachian State, and now you throw JMU and Marshall in there as well.

I have stated for several years my view of the NCAA gutting conferences like the MAC with the P5 direction and NIL nonsense. The bus has left that station and we will soon be back in the 70's again. EMU beating ASU last night and App State prove the "small guys" still have a faint pulse. It will not last much longer but congrats to them and a few others who got it done so far this season.

Edit: Hell I forgot Marshall over Notre Lame and then BG beating them!

I disagree here i think the transfer portal and expanded playoff will be good for lower football. the problem is going to be your not going to be doing it every year. because your best players are going to transfer up a lot. but you also are going to be able to get kids out of portal better then high school recruits

Cool. They still lost 15 starters to transfers and were a much different team than they expected to be. As someone in another thread pointed out, we were lucky to play them early.

After the ND game, the Marshall coach said that they got 24 players from the transfer portal and many of them played significant time at P-5 schools. Not sure of the details there, but this would support your ideas about it helping the G-5 schools some.

Makes sense to me.

Doesn't hurt when your starting QB is a Texas Tech transfer and top running back is a Florida State transfer.

The transfer portal is the most likely path to immediate success, especially for G5 teams like us who historically don't / won't get the best recruits.

I just checked - there isn’t an asterisk in the record books. You sound like a penn state apologist that still can’t believe we won that game. They had the emotions of being the - us against the world - team and 95,000 fans cheering them on. We won fair and square and maybe with the help of a tipped pass, but the 7-8 minute Ohio drive near the end of the game was no fluke. It was also no fluke that that rag tag group won the 6 big 10 games mentioned elsewhere . No need to feel sorry for penn state and give Ohio no credit for a well earned victory.

Every advantage in that game (program budget, recruiting, conference affiliation, name recognition, home field, reputation, history, etc. . .) belonged to PSU. Every disadvantage belonged to Ohio.

If anybody deserves an asterisk in a win over a "P" team it's probably CMU for their 30-27 outcome over Okla St in 2016. They were given an untimed down after Okla St was called for intentional grounding as time expired. Cooper Rush then threw a Hail Mary that was caught and they scored a TD after a lateral on the play. But the rules called for a 10-second runoff instead of an untimed down, so they should never have gotten the down. The MAC refs and the B12 replay officials were suspended for two games after that one. Last I heard Okla St's record books have the Cowboys winning the game, 27-24.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

+1 Very well said, colobobcat66.

I was there and had a very "icy" ride back to a post-game gathering with the wife of a PSU engineering faculty member. She was not pleased that OHIO had won the game, even though her hubby was an OHIO graduate. It was most inhospitable of us to actually beat the mighty Penn State Nittany Lions, especially at a time like that. We were supposed roll over and let them get that much needed first victory post-Paterno.

In fairness, the Courts and Legislatures have brought you the NIL, the NCAA has no say in the decision. And soon, the NIL, will be in High School athletics near you.

OK Billy. NIL aside, the space purposely created between conferences is not a legislative event.

You are correct the space created is not a legislative event. It's more like institutional choice and donor choice. Ohio University chose not to invest in athletics at the higher rate. Others have. It's called the American Way, it's American Culture at it's finest, people make choices, they have the freedom to support and grow their interest, business and the like.
