It usually does. I’m just thinking the offenses in the MAC are better that what we’ve seen so far, so hold on to your hats.

I totally agree. Defense was my question mark before the season, but it has been answered.

I’d bet a bunch that we will not win the MAC scoring 15 points a game. The offense has to get better- don’t they?

I would be interested to know if milking the play clock like Ohio is keeps the offense from getting into a rhythm. But it’s also possible you start taxing that defense if you overtax it with more plays.

There’s a delicate balancing act that I think this staff will need to measure once conference season starts. It’s one thing to control the clock. It’s another to have to win every game by one score.

We’ll see. I don’t have an opinion one way or another. It’s just odd to see a team with a POY candidate at quarterback and decide to limit snaps. I bet that changes in MAC play a bit.

I think that this is due, at least in part, to the fact that KR has not yet totally shaken off all the rust from his long layoff. It seems to me that he's playing with about 90 percent of the efficiency he had before his injury last year.

Said it before, this may be the best defense Ohio has had in a long time. The front six or seven is very very good. Once we get into conference, play teams are going to start throwing the ball though. Given the last two possessions of Iowa State, this may be a problem.

I'll agree on one of the last ISU possessions, the one where the Cyclones went 80 yards in 3 plays and scored their only TD in a 1-minute drive. I can't agree on the last ISU possession, a 1-play drive ending in an Ohio INT, its second of the game.

My bad… not the last two possessions. But scoring possession and when they opened it up in the fourth quarter. I think that one other possession ended with the missed field-goal.

The FG controversy notwithstanding, I'll say that there is definitive evidence that the INT should have been pass interference. You can pause the ESPN highlight at a point where the receiver has been hit and the ball isn't within reach. We lucked out on that one. It was a cool looking play with a lineman getting a pick but shouldn't have counted.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hadn't we gone into the prevent defense at that point, making long throws easier, with the goal to just eat up time, even if they did score? A poster on an ISU board said that that sequence reminded him of the Iowa game when Iowa State scored with some long passes at the end of the game when Iowa had gone into the prevent defense.

It seems that something that conservative coaches always do. It always drives me nuts, but it's usually successful and ends up with the "W." But, the times I seem to remember best is when it backfires and becomes the "prevent-victory defense."

Three play drive:

Started at the 28. First down was incomplete, but DPI was called on Justin Birchette. Close, but correct call in my opinion.

From the 43, they completed a 39 yard pass down the sideline. Roman Parodie had the underneath coverage and released the receiver which means he expected safety help from Austin Brawley. That was mistaken/blown coverage/miscommunication of some kind.

TD pass - 18 yards to the back of the end zone to a wide open receiver on a seam route. I couldn't tell if the linebacker didn't get deep enough to make Becht hesitate or if the safety hedged on the outside receiver and couldn't get to the ball on time.

Iowa State only completed two passes of 20 yards or more on the day. The one on the TD drive and a very nice seam route that went to a slot receiver for 45 yards. On that one, we didn't hurry Becht and he made a great throw.

If we went into a prevent and the prevent did the one and only thing that a prevent is designed not to do then maybe we need to work a lot on our prevent or not use it if the rest of the game we gave up no points.

Agree with OCF, stop them defensively for 50+ minutes so what do coaches do…rush 3 and drop 8. Then what did we do, give up 3 long passes and the TD. Sometimes prevent defenses are a dumb decision and suck with bad results they didn’t get all day.
