He will do fine in Ohio recruiting. With ties to Bishop Hartley, he can recruit well in central Ohio.

Exactly where we need to be living in terms of recruiting. Let's get to work.

Not sure what you mean by "with ties to Bishop Hartley." They were a power from 2010 to 2019 but haven't been much lately. They do have a new coach though.

Nowinski would be a homerun. I think that is pretty unlikely. If he had never left here, he'd probably be the head coach now.

As I speculated earlier, I think that it is more plausible to get Nate Faanes or Kurt Mattix back. They are co-DC at Charlotte and probably don't really make more than the DC here. They might also might have reason to want out of there if they think Albin's seat is hot. One issue with that is neither guy is probably going to be the Safeties coach and we need one of those as well with, as of now, only one spot to fill. We could easily end up losing a defensive position coach or two to the P5 so it might lead to some rearranging if this were to happen.

It would be interesting to see if Hauser thinks anybody is ready for internal promotion. DeAngelo Smith hasn't been in coaching all that long because he played in the NFL for 5 years. Tremane Scott has been a while but since this is the only place he has been, he is still pretty young. I'd think that the most likely internal candidate is Chris Woods. He was briefly a DC in the XFL. I am sure others are more in the know on the likelihoods there than I.

On a mostly unrelated note, I noticed something off about the Staff page on ohiobobcats.com. It lists two running back coaches and no cornerback coach. Alvin Floyd, like Scott, is another purely homegrown staff member. He only joined the staff recently. A lot of you will remember him as a safety a few years go. His Bio list him as "Assistant to Special Teams Coordinator" which contradicts the staff list which has him as a 2nd RB coach. I am guessing that was what he was as a GA. I think he must be Cornerbacks/Conditioning now. That would make the list complete but I obviously don't know.

I'd love to bring back a guy like Kurt Mattix. I think when he joined our staff in 2024 he made a difference for the defense. I don't know how likely or unlikely this is.

Chris Woods makes sense. It would be great for Smith or Scott to get experience as DC. Idk. Hauser knows some guys he can choose from.

Has Hauser hired anybody from the previous staff?

Has he hired anybody, since becoming head coach or is everyone still speculation?

Yeah it's been really quiet. I'm sure Hauser has his hands full with the portal departures but I haven't heard a peep from anyone on who's staying from the staff, who's going from the staff, and who he's going to hire to replace any departures. What am I missing?

It doesn’t help to lose your GM a week before the portal opens. And Hauser has been official head coach for about a week. It’s got to be chaos with staff questions and the portal going on at the same time.

Have we heard if there is a timeline in place?

Might help potential portal transfers to have an idea of offensive style.

I certainly don’t envy this timing for him, but I suspect the staff will remain largely unchanged.

He was a “new” hire as in most of these dudes have been here nearly a decade or more, but he’s still been with most of them for his entire four years. So he’s got just as long of relationships with these coaches as he had at other stops. And had success with them. So he’s gotten to know all of their strengths / weaknesses.

Defense, hopefully he stays internal (Tremayne would be great) - but I’d keep an eye on EJ Whitlow. DL at Wisconsin. Was DL coach under Hauser at Miami.

Maybe he steals Brechin from Miami like we stole Spense and Hauser?

If not Izzy, a name I would keep a small eye on might be Erik Koehler, TE coach at Minnesota. Was OC back at Miami when Hauser was there. George Barnett, also - is OL coach at Iowa.

Other thoughts I’ve had…
Shane Montgomery. Was at Miami for the Big Ben years. Was OC at James Madison under Cignetti. He’s currently the OC at Dartmouth. They went 7-3 this season. From Newark. Has coached in Ohio for some years. Would be a great "mentor" for a new young coach as he gets his offensive philosophy or style crafted and he can still focus harder on the defense where hes best.
