Belmont's little spoiled preppy students were very obnoxious when Ohio played there for the ESPN "Bracket Buster" game. I hope Ohio's students show up big and bust Belmont's chops for 40 minutes on November 9th.

Speaking of schedules (off topic), D-1 newcomer Bellarmine (small college in the Louisville area?) has away games vs Gonzaga, UCLA, Purdue, West Virginia. At Kentucky and at LSU are not chopped liver, but Ohio didn't just get D-1 hoops.

Back in June Jeff Boals tweeted that 14 teams of a preseason top 25 poll had refused to play us. He mentioned something about needing to try the other 11. There’s a reason Bellarmine has been successful scheduling multiple strong programs.

Its the problem with being a middle-high rank mid major. Not enough success long term to be considered in the preseason top 25, but good enough that other top 25 programs don't want to risk an upset and blow their rankings before conference play.

I also have a somewhat sneaky suspicion some people may be upset with the home E3/+ schedule this year. I’ve been wrong before, but I’d be curious to see how these games make it on air.

You may be onto something. Volleyball is usually broadcast but I see no indication that our home matches this weekend will make it to air.

A lot of bodies left over the summer but none of the bodies have been replaced. Last I heard there were students that were somewhat trained on how to do this stuff, but I’d be curious if this was the year they finally went to a production company to have trained bodies in seats.

That though will likely mean a reduction in the number of broadcasts since the cost to staff those would be much more significant than the free it used to be.

I saw that this weekend's volleyball matches will get on ESPN3/+. That gives me hope that there won't be fewer basketball games broadcast.

Is there some sort of mandate that MAC games get broadcast on the ESPN app, even if they are played when the campus is on break? It seems the only home games we don't see during breaks are non conference. Who staffs those MAC games?

I'll be curious to see the production value. When I'm not at work I'll try and piece together if I can figure out who's doing them.

Soooooooooo if I'm not mistaken the only games they super duper care about hitting the app are M/WBB. We did a few VB games on YouTube last year when we were short staffed. The reason we had to move the short staffed games there was because when you're on ESPN you have a list of obligations to them and a lot of times we couldn't meet them.

In the past I know Marty has stated it, but those things are 110% students. We had a gentleman named Don Moore come up from OU Southern and he taught the class and kind of managed it. My former boss Jason Chiappino supported the broadcasts as an extra set of hands on game day, but every camera, replay, switcher, director, graphics, etc were all students. The costs to get those break games on E3 would likely be in the thousands and thousands of dollars to use a full freelance crew.

Unveiling an NCAA Tournament / MAC Championship banner at an exhibition game because there isn't another home Saturday game for over a month. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I'm curious, was this email from Ohio Athletics?

I ask because I have season tickets, and to this point, have received no such email.

It would be nice if they could get back to coordinating Dad's Weekend to be the second Saturday of November instead of the first and make the concerted effort to get a home game vs a D1 opponent, even if it's someone like Grambling State.

Yeah, the email came from athletics. It was a season ticket promotional email, so since you already have them, I guess you didn't receive this.

Thanks for the feedback re: the email message.

110% Agree on Dad's weekend. The number of opportunities missed to promote the athletic department, generate revenue, and potentially create a sense of fan loyalty to the Alma mater based off of memories at games as students, well...to me it's staggering.

I'll be honest -- I believe one of two things applies to the current 2021-22 schedule:

1) They're purposely avoid scheduling games on weekends to avoid large crowds because of COVID.

2) There's an issue about scheduling within the department in terms of getting enough solid games at home on a Saturday.

The number of weekend home games, during normal times in a regular year should be unacceptable to Ohio Athletics. Obviously, these aren't normal times. It's a huge missed opportunity for revenue. If they're being cautious I can respect that for this year.

Your point about Dad's weekend and the timing on the schedule is spot on. Flat out -- Ohio should be scheduling Dad's weekend within a weekend there can be a real home men's basketball game - not an exhibition. Ideally, they'd do it when there could be a men's/women's double header.

I would really, really like to hear from someone about the scheduling and the reason for so few weekend games. If they admit my theory in #1 above, I'm actually fine with it because it demonstrates thoughtfulness. If it's really any other reason, I'm frustrated -- both selfishly, and for the program as a whole -- because of the missed opportunity coming off an NCAA tournament win.

Special weekends are set by the University well before schedules are completed.

This debate has been had on here ever since the switch to semesters. I find it difficult to believe that said schedule couldn't be (or isn't) done in cooperation with the AD's department with events for dads in mind on dad's weekend, mom's weekend, and parents weekend.

Ridiculous. The one and done opponents should come from the MAC West. Aside from BG/Toledo, all the rivalries are intra-division, and it shouldn't be a big thing to lock that series into a two-a-year arrangement. And to not recognize that the two teams who competed in last year's final will also be picked 1-2 in the preseason polls by scheduling two games is a brain dead decision.

Maybe they intentionally made them only play once to keep their losses down in an effort to be a 2 bid league for once? Nah, too thoughtful for them to come up with. But an interesting theory.

Approaching this from the perspective of giving the MAC the best odds at a two-bid league, is the two teams "splitting" the regular season (assuming we played twice) then one team winning the finals worse for the odds than one team winning in the regular season than losing in the finals? I'd think Ohio-Buffalo playing three teams in the season instead of two would raise SOS. Interesting topic

Depending on what you value out of a non-conference schedule, ours is quite good compared to the rest of the MAC.

-Us and Miami are the only teams that have seven home games, but three of Miami's are against non-D1 compared to our one.

-We have six home games against D1 teams and no one else has more than four.

-Ball State and Miami have the most weekend home games with three apiece. Two of either of those three are against D1 teams. BG also has two D1 weekend home games, but they're both Sundays.

-Miami has clearly the best single home game (Cincinnati). Us hosting Belmont might be second best.

-Most difficult is probably a tie between NIU (Washington, Indiana, Missouri, Marquette, Dayton) and CMU (Missouri, DePaul, Gonzaga, Kentucky, Xavier). Both play only two home games.

-WMU's schedule is the biggest tease. Four home games but three are against non-D1s. At least the D1 game is on a weekend, but it's a Sunday game.

   Posted: 9/30/2021 12:00:15 PM

Thanks for the research shaba. Maybe it's just another odd year because of COVID, but all of those seem like low numbers of home games to me, including OUrs, so I went back a few years to see what it has looked like previously.

Before sharing all that, I think it's reasonable to pose this simple thought:

Given how many Ohio fans are alumni that travel at least 30-40 miles (if not 90-150) for a home game, how many Saturday Non-Conf games is it reasonable to expect if you're a season ticket holder? Obviously with the MAC, we're getting 4, and really should be getting 5 if they did things right with their scheduling. To me, the answer to that is a minimum of 3-4 D1 non-conference Saturday games *unless* there is a scheduled preseason tournament (ex. Charleston Classic). Now, obviously the other games that get scheduled play into that (@ Kentucky this year for example)

If you're Ohio Basketball, should part of your schedule be getting your players decent games in front of Saturday crowds on your home court? Revenue has to be what, 30-50% higher on those weekend games? With 350+ D1 schools, I would think that would be doable in a normal year. Unfortunately, this still isn't a normal year, so after thinking that through, I'll "give them a pass" on a personal level, back tracking from my prior rant(s).

The research:

On Average since 2012-2013, Ohio has had 4 Non-conference home games, and 4 MAC home games on weekends. That does not include the Exhibition games. Prior to this year, we've had 4 MAC Saturday games every year. With the new 20 game schedule, everyone should be getting 5 weeknight and 5 weekend home games, while accounting for the final Friday of the season when everyone plays at the same time. I like that concept, but it would garner more fan excitement on the final Saturday of the season in my opinion.

It bears noting, I think, that the new ESPN+/CBSSN TV deal started in 2016-17, which is when games got flipped to Friday night TV slots at the last minute. I still think the networks' window to decide should be a minimum of three weeks.

Non-Conference weekend home games:
13-14: 7
14-15: 5
15-16: 1 (played in Paradise Jam)
16-17: 3
17-18: 3 (played in Charleston Classic)
18-19: 3 (played in Jamaica Classic)
19-20: 5 (played in Myrtle Beach Invitational)

21-21: 2 + 4 MAC

**In this case, "weekend home game" means a Saturday or Sunday, or a Friday holiday game, such as the Friday after Thanksgiving.

I'm not a season ticket holder, but what I would like to see is at minimum two non-conference Saturday home games against D1 teams while students are in session. Considering the quarter system and that we now play 20 conference games, I think this is a reasonable scheduling goal. You probably only have three or four weekends at your disposal to make this work. This year, we have only one game that meets that criteria (St. Francis).

Coming from Cincinnati, two young kids, and most of my weekends spent reffing basketball games, I don't have much available time to come to campus. I've been good for one home game the last few years, but I'm going to try to get two this year. And when I do, I want the full package (students, 110, etc), so give me options.

There are 358 Division 1 basketball teams. 30 of them still have not publicly announced their non-conference schedule. We are one of those teams.

We also have not put out a news release announcing IJ, Olumide, or Tommy's signings.

Did the Ohio sports information department suffer cuts during COVID? All of this is embarrassing.
