The 2:00 start time for Homecoming is perfect. That 3:30 time is just too late with a parade at 10.

As for to$u, I would have avoided it altogether and just started our game at 2. The hype around to$u and Notre Dame will be off the charts that week.

Does it really matter much? During the Solich years we were usually ranked mediocre at best in recruiting and did pretty well. In the MAC, it's generally come down to how players were developed or misdeveloped, used or misused.

Two things are different this time around: 1) You do not have as much time to develop a portal player/players you develop can easily now jump ship and 2) I heard Solich is going to announce his retirement and if true, the next hire may produce different results.

Here's what Zips add from the portal: "mikefarrellsports.com"
On the offensive side of the ball, wide receivers Alex Adams of LSU and Shocky Jacques-Louis of Pittsburgh, tight end Caden Clark of Alabama and the running back duo of Clyde Price from Kansas State and Cameron Wiley of Minnesota should add a much-needed spark to the unit. The more recent addition of FCS quarterback Jeff Undercuffler was a quality under-the-radar pickup. Defensively, defensive linemen Curtis Harper of Syracuse and Victor Jones of Wyoming along with defensive backs Kerry Martin of West Virginia and Nate Thompson of Duke should all make an immediate impact.

My point was that at this level it isn't really the quality of players but the quality of coaching that usually makes the difference. Last year, "the next hire" didn't show much regarding the use of players (e.g., play calling) or their development (e.g., too much in-game shuffling of players at key positions). And if you have a quality coach who shows he wants to help players improve on and off the field, that should help deter players from moving on, although it's not a guarantee.

This doesn't look like your father's Akron squad.

Had some time so figured I'd look at what talent Akron has added on the offensive side of the ball.

Starting with the two running backs, both were 3 star recruits coming out of HS. Price is 6'0" and 214 but didn't have a rush for KSU, is from Kansas. Wiley is 6'2" 210 and was second on Gopher's depth chart to start the 2021 season. When star running back was lost for the year in the first game, Wiley took over but was passed over and demoted after two games by coach Row the Boat. He then went right into the portal before the season was over.

Receiver Adams of LSU only caught 1 pass. Jacques-Louis of Pitt however has played four years and in each of the past two season has caught at least 25 passes. TE Caden Clark played for state Champs Akron-Hoban and three star and is returning home from the Crimson Tide without any stats.

The QB is interesting. He had no offers out of HS other than FCS division U of Albany. He was MVP on his HS basketball team and batted .400 for his squad which won the state baseball championship his senior year. He is 6'5" 231 lb pro-style QB who is a 2x All-American at U of A and is now going to another UofA! in 2019 he led all of FCS with 41 TD passes having 5 games with 300 yards passing and 5 games of throwing for 4 TD's. He has two years remaining. Seems like a fine pick-up with little downside.

Is the new Akron Coach seeking to make the Zip offense into Oregon lite?

With the new coach Akron might be a dark horse to win the East. We might be battling BG to stay out of the cellar this season.

FWIW, here's CFN's Ohio preview: https://collegefootballnews.com/2022/06/ohio-bobcats-prev...

They put the onus on the pass rush to improve, but they also note the poor turnover rate last year which is really an indictment of the whole defense. I hope the new guys focus on that this season. They also mention the need for more offensive output but some of that was attributable to poor field position due to few turnovers, although shuffling QBs didn't help.

They predict six wins, with "should wins" over Buffalo, BG and Fordham, a "likely" win over Akron, a "lean" win over FAU, and "50-50 games" with MOFO, Kent and BSU. Considering we beat only one of those last year (MOFO was more of a "managed not to lose" game) and all the 50-50 games are on the road, six wins will probably be a tall order. Four sounds more like it to me. Our best bets are Buffalo, BG, Akron and Fordham, all of which are home games. By rights we should've beaten Buffalo last season; BG and Akron were worse than we were (although Akron could be improved); and Fordham is 1AA and if we lose a second straight game to that division Albin should be canned on the spot.

1) Pass rush and 3rd down defense! Evans is a notable loss, but I think there's more depth across the D Line this year than in a couple years. It will also be huge if the starting linebacker unit is Houston with healthy Keye Thompson and Jeremiah Wood. That preview makes special mention of Blauser, but I was unimpressed by how often he completely whiffed on tackles last year.

2) Don't make Rourke a runner if he can't run. Don't make Navarro a passer if he can't pass. Can Harris put himself in position to get some run?

3) Can we get a dang kicker who is a threat beyond 40 yards? We are a scoring liability when it's 4th down "in range" and we are forced to mull over going for it.

4) I think FAU is the biggest game of the year. Season opener at home against a team that would probably be peer to the upper middle of the MAC pack. Win that one and you can get rid of the sour taste from last year and feel confident about MAC play even after likely poundings at Penn State and ISU.

I predict that Albin needs to win 6 games to keep his job, per his contract which can be terminated after 2 years.

Mine's just a bit different; the powers that be will let him stay with at least four wins in the MAC and at least five wins overall (1-3 in OOC). If he goes 0-4 OOC he might not get a chance at the MAC schedule. Actually, I hope it doesn't come to that. Last season was really unbearable.

I was 100% in favor of a buyout (stop the bleeding).

But, O.U. made the decision to keep Albin for another season.

Hopefully, it won't be the disaster last season was.

We'll find out in a little less then 3 months.

So, pay 500k to get rid of Albin and then pay a new guy 700 or 800k? Maybe then when I watch the mid week MACtion games there will be 200 people in the stands instead of 100.

It was, and remains my opinion ,it would have been money well spent.

But, its been a moot point for months.

O.U. decided not buy out, but instead ,to keep Albin.

As I posted, we'll see how it works out, starting on 9/3.

It was, and remains my opinion ,it would have been money well spent.

But, its been a moot point for months.

O.U. decided not buy out, but instead ,to keep Albin.

As I posted, we'll see how it works out, starting on 9/3.

I'd keep things conservative with the economy a mess with inflation. What is going to be the CFB landscape in 5 years? Ohio may want to bring in somebody down the road that fits the new dynamic.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended

I don't disagree.

It just seems like lately, the "new dynamic" ,can change hourly.

While it feels like its been a while the NCAA approved transferring with a sit out year in April of 2021. New rules are in this year to tighten portal window so the Towns move at the last second from OU to BG just to go somewhere else doesn't happen. MAC deals with ESPN and CFP are up in a few years. Is the MAC going to FCS as some think? MAC resigns then it won't be.

If there's a new deal with ESPN it probably won't be as lucrative and will likely give less bang for the buck. Disney continues to bleed money with ESPN, so they probably won't throw as much cash at the MAC, especially with the tons of money they just gave to the SEC. There's still CBS, Fox and Bally's but the latter two have shown little interest in G5 conferences. And with people shifting to streaming services to save upwards of $40 a month, the cable/satellite ESPN channels won't be as special as they move to streaming, too. The MAC and most G5 conference games will wind up on ESPN+ or its equivalent, so that only people seeking out those games will watch them. Much of the audience for midweek MACtion games are channel surfers and sports bars, but unless they know where to look they might not find MAC games. Going to 1AA/FCS would be even worse because the TV packages bring even less money. There's also local coverage to consider. Ohio at least gets some coverage in the Columbus and maybe some other markets but lower divisions are practically nonexistent in the media unless they're playing for a national title. Outside of Dayton and Youngstown the Flyers' and the Penguins' football programs get zilch media coverage.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

The G5 TV deals have been trending up so I wouldn't make a bet the MAC's deal will go down unless it heads to FCS. Its a transitional period at the moment and if we enter into an era of demand destruction for building materials then it would be the time to get facility projects started.
