Make it make sense.

Pin this one on Boals and his constant rotations. If he’s not gonna play James, then you’re better off having Roderick out there trying to make a three that matters in the last five minutes.

This is spot on. Elmore James clearly is better than Clayton yet 9 mins less????

No. He isn't.

On the season, OU is 2nd in the MAC in Offensive Rating. We're 6th in Defensive Rating. In the first half Akron made 23 of 33 shots. We need DEFENSE.

Elmore James (who I'm high on and deserves PT by the way), but as far as being "clearly better than Clayton" and determining the right amount of PT for the needs of this team?

James is dead last on our team in Defensive Rating.
He's next to last in Defensive Box Plus Minus.
He's dead last in Defensive Win Shares per 40 minutes.

Please try again.

Gets fouled but misses both free throws. I consider that a turnover.

I still can't believe that Gabe Wiz got a scholarship to Louisville.

I swear this kid got recruited bc of a 15 min workout without defenders. Slow. Can't rebound. No hands. The most unskilled player on the floor.

He does hit 3 pointers in warm-ups though. That has to be the explanation.

It's flabbergasting he cannot rebound. It's like an allergy. He has 0 rebounds. Myles Brown has 2.

Easy….I notice this board gets real sensitive when you question the skills of the Whiz. As noted above, that one play in the second half sums up the Whiz best when he could’ve gone up for a dunk, but instead he pump faked to get fouled and missed both foul shots. He has no sense of feel whatsoever on the basketball court. None. Chris Mack should never be allowed to coach Division I college basketball again for giving him a power five scholarship. Boals has to know he needs to push Whiz next year to a D2 program.

Would love too see what those numbers look like if Elmore was given 28-30 minutes per game. But Boals won’t do it.

It does not, stop trying to be a victim. If anything, people will not stop crapping on him.

That's categorically untrue. I agree Wiz isn't cutting it. I agree he should only be used for defensive purposes in spot duty. However that doesn't mean I think he's unplayable or unusable.

What we don't appreciate is you and a couple others bring up how much you think Wiz sucks, and how it's all Boals fault in EVERY. THREAD. FOR. ALL. DISCUSSIONS.

We get it. You hate him. Move on and find a new hobby.

Me thinks you don't understand stats that are adjusted for temp/possession and normalized for minutes played. They're specifically built so guys with lots of counting stats in lots of minutes can be compared to guys with less counting stats in less minutes.

Now players don't statistically perform the same in minute 1 and minute 40, but the natural trend is toward being LESS productive per possession the more minutes you play not less. So if anything playing EJ4 30+ minutes would just make his advanced defensive stats worse.

I have witnessed enough. I really appreciate the players' enthusiasm and effort thus far. I haven't been in the locker room or attended every practice. Something is just not working out well this year. I understand the difficulties with portal/ recruiting aspects. I wonder what in house options there are with asst. coaches and or what can be "fixed". Bring Back Tommy Threeman! if you want to buddy.. It could be good timing

And we have a winning record overall and was given a difficut schudle to start confence play. We now get some of the lower team in the Mac and can pick up some moment and wins. Also Miami, Kent, Buffalo, Akron and BGSU all stil have to visit the convo this year where we have been sucessfull and they will have to deal with Norm and the O-Zone.

No other team in the MAC has the advantage of Norm yelling "shooter. . . shooter" on every defensive possession.

It's days like today that I appreciate what we have in the convo. I live in the Akron burbs so usually attend Akron and Kent games plus the MAC tourney. Today I had a group of 7 with my 2 boys, father in law, sister in law and 2 of her boys. Bought upper level seats. Front row top section opposite our bench. We arrive to find a seat in our group MISSING entirely. WTF? I ask the usher lady and she says...oh that's not a good seat anyways. Huh? Well, She wasn't wrong.

I always forget about the stupid track and that if you sit low in the upper deck you can't see half the court and there's a bar right in your view. So bad. Had to relocate to a section towards the baseline and higher up to even see the game.

Long live the Convo!

Anyone catch what Groce said to Boals with just under a minute left? I clearly saw him say "Jeff that's..??". We had just fouled #4 to send him to the line. Didn't seem malicious at all I just don't understand why there would be any conversation between coaches in that moment. Very strange to me. I don't think Boals heard him or if he did, he didn't acknowledge it.

Saw Jeff greet and hug several former Zip contacts after the game, including the band director. Nice of him to do after a tough loss.

Last observation...as I'm walking out after just missing on the duck toss IJ is heading to the bus and AJ Brown is just behind him. This is a maximum of 7 minutes after the horn sounded to end the game. Strange.

PS I hate the Zips.

I actually don’t blame Boals. I blame Chris Mack. It starts with him. Hope that clears it up.

Then why did he get like 20 scholarships on the same level as Louisville?
Regarding the missed opportunity for a dunk, did you ever thing he maybe thought he'd get an plus 1? I mean his FT shooting is at 74 percent. Yeah, let's push him to D2. Maybe we start 5 guards next year. As much as I like Boals his recruiting is mediocre, certainly not up to par with Saul.

Huh?

I know I thought OUr 6-11 center should be able to get either the layin or dunk, foul or no foul, with the ball at the basket and a 5-11 guard on him.

+1

I think we have all seen enough of the Whiz this season to understand that he was not thinking pump fake….get fouled…and dunk for a plus one. He gave up an easy dunk on a 5’11 dude only to give that dude a chance to foul and force two missed foul shots. Listen I get it. The Whiz tries hard. But just because you are 6’11 or 7 foot it doesn’t mean you should have to come in automatically at the 17 minute mark of every game or even play for that matter.

And concerning the topic of people saying 20 other colleges offered him scholarships as well. I can’t make sense of it. Maybe they only watched the first 30 seconds of his reel that showcased dunks. I feel bad for the Whiz because Boals keeps putting him out there and he’s not ready for Division-One basketball. With his skill set and lack of court awareness/feel, the Whiz at this point of his career is not being put in a position to succeed.

So far, that last statement appears to be true, unless some of our freshman have potential we’ve not yet seen manifest. However, to state such an opinion is pure blasphemy on this board. You may be doxxed and then tarred and feathered and run out of your hometown on a rail! Boals, however, can make things right by showing with next year’s class that he’s improved his ability to recruit freshmen and work the portal.

I like the dialogue here. It means there are many of us out there that care and love OHIO. And want the best for the program. We can nit pick everything from who farted the loudest in the locker room to portal/ b.s. My standards are higher than most as I have witnessed the mid to late 80's through present. I was not at all implying firing coach B. whatsoever. I am as optimistic as anyone on the board. HOWEVER, it is ok to be a realist and try to disect +/-. How to improve. To make sure we aren't in the bottom 3rd. next year

And no one recruited him. Groce's staff saw him walking on campus as a freshman and asked if he'd like to try out for a position as a practice player.

This hits home to me. It sucks that we are losing. I hate the fact that we’ve blown the opportunity to make us into a powerful mid major after the Virginia win and producing an NBA draft pick. I hate the feeling like we don’t have a legitimate chance to beat Akron / Kent /Toledo - many times losing in blow out fashion or fighting back from 20 point deficits to lose by 6. Those teams have found the way to pass us with having more athletes on the floor. Enrique Freeman fouled out two Ohio players on his own. Think about how ridiculous that statement is?

This might be minor, but it shouldn’t. Ohio has no media covering the team that could provide insight into them and thought on Boals approaches. Boals never, ever has to answer a difficult question about his team.

Here we are approaching February 1st and just trying to qualify for the MAC tourney is in question. Are we headed towards being Ball State and being mediocre? I get not everyone cares as much as others. But anyone has the right to be critical of this program with an analytical eye and ask why is this program where it is today in relation to the big three of the conference right now?

+1 to both. I appreciate Fear’s take because I feel the same way and really care about the program. Win’s like Virginia tend to catapult programs forward. E.g — Georgetown upset eventually led to adds like Walt, Jon Smith, and ultimately a roster that nearly made the Elite 8 two years following before a coaching change.

Outside of Groce, neither Todd K or Senderoff have tourney wins to point to. However, our current talent doesn’t match Kent, Toledo, or Akron. I’m a huge fan of Boals and Lamar. They’ve proven they can land the caliber players to win (Sears, Dwight, AJB, EJ4); but we need more of those types and I’m not sure how that gets improved on a more macro level.

Cellis’ thread about Boals’ recruiting was pretty eye opening and those cracks are starting to show this season. It’s going to be a big off-season for the program. Maintaining the right players, moving on from some, and bringing in a much needed influx of talent and athleticism.
