I guess, I'm kind of surprised. Considering the down year, nobody else is generally close. Ball State is at least 3.2K, Buffalo 2.8K.

OU plays in a cavern and that awful camera angle never helps the perception for the TV crowd, so 6K ends up looking like just friends and family.

Extremely interesting to walk through some of these other numbers (includes D2 + D3).

- Creighton is 6th in attendance.

- More people went to my HS than go to Kent State games.

- UD has higher attendance than OSU.

- MARIETTA COLLEGE has a larger crowd than Miami.

http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketball_RB/2023/Attend...

Observations:

Without looking at actual numbers, I'd be willing to bet that for all but somewhere between 1 and 3 seasons, Ohio has led the MAC both in butts in seats, as well as tickets counted, for the last 25 years. That, by the way, is one of the more frustrating things about this program not managing to have consistently better results compared to Akron, Kent, UB, Toledo, etc. At least to me.

On that list, of the top 30 in the left-hand column, probably 2/3 are either schools without a D1 football program, or a school where men's basketball is the bell-cow program within the respective athletic department. OSU, Texas, Wisconsin, Iowa are huge schools that draw well at everything.

What do these observations mean in the grand scheme of things? Nothing. 😂

Agree OU_Country. Those four MAC schools you mentioned above have been better than Ohio the past 20 plus seasons regular season wise. The Bobcats have struck gold a few years when they got hot for three games in the league tourney. Ohio has the premier basketball facility in the league and leads the league in attendance. Ohio is at the top of the MAC when it comes to compensating the basketball coach. Ohio University puts a priority on basketball, yet it is the teams you mentioned above that are performing better than the Bobcats. The same can't be said for Peden Stadium. Peden Stadium is not the premier facility in the league. Yet some Bobcat Attackers complain that Coach Albin shouldn't get a raise or an extension on his contract after winning 10 games, the MAC East and having the best MAC regular season record in the league. It could be that basketball fans are not frustrated about the results you mentioned above, because the first 30 games don't matter in basketball.

All of these points bring me back to another point made in another thread about how likely a recruit is to sign with Ohio if we get them on campus.

This might be true for those that are part of the demographics that post here on BA. But is it true about the 18-20 year old football/basketball players? Or, with how things are in 2023, the 26 year old? Or are they looking for other things?

At the risk of sounding fixated on attendance, the MAC has had some of its better crowds the last 2 weekends. It might be a trend or it could be just having the stars aligned in the night sky, but reported attendances included:

8322 Saturday Miami at Ohio
5344 Saturday CMU at Toledo
6068 Friday EMU and Emoni Bates at Ball St. on national TV
5821 sellout Friday Kent at Akron on national TV
6922 99% capacity Jan. 28 BG at UT
5425 sellout Jan. 28 WMU at CMU

The WMU at CMU rivalry game had a wild comeback from the home team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjYq8C0H3bQ

The JAR sold out against Kent in a big game. It holds 5500 although it states above they had 5821. My guess is they didn't turn anyone away and would not have matched our attendance (8322) even if they had the seats. We've always had the best MAC attendance I believe.

If we just pay the coach 1M, attendance will skyrocket.

While not great crowds compared to 1970s/80s/90s, recent attendance numbers continue to show improvement throughout the MAC. Two games Friday night (at Buffalo and Ohio) plus today at Miami, Ball St. and EMU all were around 5,000, give or take a couple hundred. For a long time, it might have taken 5 or 6 home games for Miami or EMU to get those type of numbers in the building.

That’s really not true in our case. We have a solid team coached by a former player who was on a great team back in the day. We only get 5k against Akron, coached by a former coach. Lots of drama and a very good team. The students and people of Athens county don’t really give a you know what.

With the nature of our fan base, Friday night games aren't optimal. This woukd have been 6500-7000 on Saturday.

Agreed Jeff. Athens is small. There’s often lot of k-12 stuff going on on Friday nights and that impacts attendance. That was true this Friday. I know of 10 empty seats due to middle/high school events Friday. All would have been filled Saturday. And you are gonna lose OU students on Friday night as well.

Anyway. Boals had the team looking good. Way fun night.

I see that Athens county has 62k residents. Not sure if the students are counted in that total. But if not, that’s a pretty decent number to draw from. I would think that football and basketball games would be a big event, same as concerts and plays held at the university. Other than high school sports that may conflict some time, what is standing in the way of larger crowds? We should easily average 10k for hoops and close to capacity for football, with the exception of the lousy MACtion weeknight games in cold weather. Win or lose. Not to mention others coming in from Columbus, etc.

Students are theoretically counted in the U.S. Census, but in actuality huge numbers of students at both OHIO and Hocking are missed. So, there's an undercount problem. Probably you can add about 10,000 to the reported count to get an accurate estimate.

Uh. No. It isn’t. But, it’s why OU’s attendance is so damn impressive. Folks around here show up really well when they can. For many sports. Friday nights and those Tuesday night football games are just way tough for such a small rural area.

In many cases OU students are counted in that total. It all depends on how they or their parents fill out the census forms which were a mess in 2020 (I was an enumerator and saw first hand how challenging it was to get an accurate count much less determine where folks were living). As a side note, that's one reason Athens is often labeled as the poorest county in the state. When a student is counted locally and their "income" is reported, it drives our income numbers down. Don't get my wrong, Athens is on the low end of the socio-economic continuum in Ohio but student counts have an effect on that.

And, if you are a student who is working locally, rather than living totally off Ma and Pa, you are more likely to be one of those students who gets counted locally. My son worked on a previous census, Alan, and he also saw what you saw first-hand. It wasn't pretty.

We discussed years ago the question of is there a better fan base than is both NOT in a power conference and NOT in a somewhat large metropolitan area than us. I think Utah State and New Mexico St were 2 comps given.

That joke don't play off a dead person, who's family was rightfully hurt that their relative who was an alum, won 19 games, had everyone returning and got fired. I'm sure if your son got canned from his job, you'd run right out and support his employer.

This Friday was a senior night game for several high schools in the area and, as 69 pointed out, that affected the crowd total, translating to empty seats in the camera view. Just sayin'.

I see that Athens county has 62k residents. Not sure if the students are counted in that total. But if not, that’s a pretty decent number to draw from.

Uh. No. It isn’t. But, it’s why OU’s attendance is so damn impressive. Folks around here show up really well when they can. For many sports. Friday nights and those Tuesday night football games are just way tough for such a small rural area.

This Friday was a senior night game for several high schools in the area and, as 69 pointed out, that affected the crowd total, translating to empty seats in the camera view. Just sayin'.
