I believe this is correct...good memory.

Tore his ACL at the North South Game at St John Arena, and Stanford backed off.

This happens all the time when a new coach takes over. Nobody should be surprised by Wight not coming here. Can't blame Boals for telling him he's better going elsewhere if he doesn't think he fits his system. People need to get over someone's feelings getting hurt during this transition. It is what it is and Boals needs to do what he feels is right. Good luck to Ben and I'll be interested in seeing where he ends up. Hopefully it's still Division One.

My guess is that James will officially announce he's leaving soon and of course Kirk could be on his way out too.

This is going to be a fascinating recruiting season for Boals and company.

I feel like we're going to need one of those pre-season events with a scrimmage and dunk contest just to introduce us to the 86 new people in the program before the season tips off. Not at all saying it's a bad thing, like you said it's kind of fascinating. It's going to be almost like a brand new team next season. It's scary and exciting.

So it looks like realistically we will be returning Murrell, Cowart, Preston, Springs, McMurray and Vander Plas with Dartis, James and Kirk looking at being gone via injury, transfer and transfer? Wow, perhaps this would have helped Saul if house cleaning would have occurred like this in his first year!!! We might still have Ryan Taylor!

Springs? What is his role going to be? Really tall equipment manager?

Well, he is a center, which is a stated need by coach, and currently, he's still here.

I don’t follow basketball much compared to football but came onto the recruiting board after seeing a commitment announced on Facebook. I am a Thomas Worthington Grad and my best friend has had four sons play for TW the past decade, two of which have played college basketball. My friend said that Boals rescinded the Scholarship and left it to his HS coach to tell him.

He can’t rescind a signed loi, he may have talked him into opting out.https://www.google.com/amp/www.spokesman.com/stories/2013...

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Let's wait and see on how the kid shakes out. Wasn't overly optimistic about him initially and this was one Kemp wanted at William and Mary. So we'll see if Kemp's eye for talent is good or is swing n a miss in a couple years.

I had no doubt. But aren't the views of the amateur scouts here on the subject of Ben Wight the same as our new coach?

We have no idea what Coach Boals' specific views are on Ben Wight.

Good point about Kemp being at William and Mary. But my point is....I think this outcome for Wight surprised a lot of us on BA. We will never know all the programs that showed an interest in him after being released from Ohio. But we do know that Elon (Colonial League, same as William and Mary) hosted him for a visit. We know he also got an offer from North Alabama, a new Div I program. I think some of us thought he would be talking to schools like Ashland and Ohio Dominican and Grand Valley State. I'm happy for the kid that things turned out better for him than that.

I think it's safe to say he didn't see a spot for Wight on his roster.

Yet, some of the "amateur scouts" have been pretty spot on with the direction of the roster and recruiting. Also, not sure how it can be anymore clear what Boals' view on Wight was.

I am not overly surprised that this was the way it played out. You have to remember, when a new boss comes in, they want their guys and clearly didn't feel like Wight was up to snuff on his caliber of player. In regards to McDay, he felt he had something there so there was no need to cut the cord.

For me, recruiting is always judged by what we can get after the 2nd year. Usually the first spring is a jerry-rig adventure, year 1 recruiting is quasi put together, but the following year the in-roads have been made and the name is known. By that point, the barometer usually tells where a program is going.

I'm in no way impugning the character of Mr. Wight. However, to assume that playing ability was the only factor in Boals cutting the cord with Wight MAY not be the whole picture. Coach Boals made it clear on day one that athletic talent was not his only criteria in deciding who he wanted on his team. Perhaps, the "goodness of fit" wasn't there for a variety of reasons, and athletic ability might have been a lesser or greater criteria. All I'm really saying is the BA recruiting authorities are engaging in idle speculation -- nothing wrong with that -- and may or may not have the slightest idea what they are talking about. For the record, I often spout off on topics I know nothing about, so it's par for the course here on BA. Just don't take any of the pontifications on here too seriously.

Congrats to the young man and I wish him the best of luck on the court, in the classroom and in life in general. One quick glance at the William and Mary roster shows they only have 9 players, so inevitably a similar situation than what was inherited here at OHIO for that staff.
