I'm really looking forward to this game. I'm guessing Miami will come in a slight favorite, I'd guess maybe -2.5 or so when the line is set. Ohio's chances at the MACC have taken a hit but they're still alive, and a win here would put them back in the MACC mix as it would also hand Miami another conference loss. It could also factor in to play for a tie-breaker as I'm guessing we're going to see some form of one at season's end since everyone in the East has already suffered a loss. You can essentially bet the house that it's going to be a close game. I felt Ohio could beat Buffalo (should have) and Kent State (could have) and I feel no differently about Ohio being able to beat Miami. Records always go out the window in rivalry games, and this one is no different. This team continues to fight in every MAC game it plays and you know they will next Tuesday night.

"Records always go out the window in rivalry games, and this one is no different."

It takes two to tango to be a rivalry. Miami hasn't thought of OHIO as their rival in years. Perhaps it officially ended for them when Charlie Coles retired.

Anecdotal of course: I have spoken to several twenty-thirty year olds, grads of Miami, each said they regularly attended home games back in their day and none of them got the vibe on campus that the Bobcats were a rival.

Perhaps it is still motivation to our guys. Anything that gives them a chance to win #2 now that the easy part of the schedule has passed is a positive.

At the last home volleyball game, Lou (PA guy, Lou Horvath) made a comment he makes often in regards to the Alumni Band, "They don't have anything like that in Oxford." And the college aged ladies behind us said "Why Oxford? I don't get it?"

Sad state of affairs.

While I agree the rivalry isn't what it used to be, both schools are each other's rivals. Plus, Ohio has owned Miami in football over the last decade and a half. Ohio has won 11 of the last 14 meetings in the series. That could certainly explain why some Miami alums/fans feel the rivalry has lost some of its luster. When a team owns you for that length of time, apathy is bound to set in. And probably has.

Hmm . . . well this may be the year that that apathy goes away. I hope not, but given our track record so far I'd say it is more likely than not.

Would love a victory but won't get my hopes up. Just continuing my approach I've had since the Duquesne debacle.

This game is winnable. But that's the sad part about this season -- all the MAC games are winnable. Even 4-0 NIU is a few plays away from 1-3. A bad snap by CMU on a FG. A failed two-point try by Toledo in a game where NIU managed only a TD and five FGs. Even BG had two opportunities in the last six minutes when down by eight.

As for MOFO, they trailed CMU in the fourth quarter but got two TDs to pull it out, and trailed BSU but got a TD with 12 minutes to go to win it. Their one easy win was vs Akron. They could easily also be 1-3.

I'm going out on a very shaky limb and say we win this one, just because we're due. We've lost two straight to these guys, so a good chunk of our team has never beaten them. The difference in 2018 was a fourth-quarter safety when Nathan was sacked in the end zone. In 2019 it was a FG with about four minutes to go. We need to step up the passing game on both sides of the ball and not beat ourselves with stupid penalties and poor tackling.

??????

Isn't that what winning teams do? They score at crunch time and they keep the other team from doing so?

Two TD's vs CMU in the fourth? Why didn't CMU get two TD's in the fourth? CMU had no trouble getting Homecoming TD's vs OHIO.

Got a TD against BSU with 12 minutes to go--what, couldn't BSU move the ball after the TD? They had 12 minutes.

As for MOFO, you are describing every good OHIO team under Solich--lots of close wins by scoring late or keeping the opponent from doing so. Sounds like those Red Chickens got things going their way.

Go OHIO, beat Miami.

It's 8:16 am Central time in Austin, TX and my work building currently smells like sewage. The only possible explanation is that the vortex of suck coming from the Northeast direction is causing a back-up in the plumbing.

All very good points and it backs why I feel Ohio can not only win this game, but why I felt the same way about the Buffalo and Kent State games too. Aside from BG and Akron, the rest of the 10 schools can all beat one another. And for 6 years running Ohio has proved that it certainly can. OU has smoked a number of MAC teams during that time frame, and has had a chance to win every single MAC games it lost during the stretch too, which is something no other MAC team can say. The fact of the matter is, even in a down year record wise, Ohio is still on par with everyone else in the conference. Just as NIU could be 1-3, Ohio could be 4-0 and was only a few plays away from it. That's why Ohio is still a very dangerous team, because they continue to complete and there's been no quit. A lot of teams sitting at 1-7, 1-3 would have mailed it in. But these guys haven't. Ohio is still in the MAC race and isn't out of anything yet. And I think this is the perfect time to be facing Miami because you know it has their attention and they'll be fired up and ready to get a win Tuesday night.

My optimism is a lot more cautious than yours, but it's there for two reasons. First, we didn't beat ourselves vs Kent as much as they beat us. The two fumbles were forced -- the ball was stripped in traffic instead of just being dropped -- and we didn't have stupid penalties at key times. (The INT was plainly an overthrow.)

Second, there was a play in the second half where the coaching staff actually seemed to be awake enough to do something right. It was when Tuggle rolled over on a defender, got his footing and gained five or so more yds for a first down. He got up signalling the bench to hurry up and call a play, and they did before replay had a chance to look at it. One of the replay angles seemed to show that Tuggle's forearm hit the ground as he rolled on the defender, which would have put him down short of the line to gain. Tuggle apparently thought he might've been down, so he asked for a quick play. Earlier in the season Albin called a timeout in a similar situation and a positive play was overturned by replay. So maybe, just maybe, the coaching staff is starting to pay attention to what's going on in the game. At this point in the season I'll take any ember of hope.

I'm all for taking any ember of hope, and do think it's possible we can beat Miami. However, I'm less sure that the coaching staff is paying enough attention what's actually going on in front of them. The end of the Kent game was a classic example. We needed two scores to tie and send the game into OT. We have the ball with more than two minutes to go, with two TOs in our pocket. Instead of kicking the FG when we get in range, we waste the TOs, and kick a FG when we failed get a TD with just seconds left on the clock. It really doesn't make any difference the order in which you get your two scores. Take the FG earlier, miss recovering the onside kick, and you still have a chance to get the ball back by forcing them to punt when you used the TOs when your on defense. This assumes that the defense can stop them, but they'd probably be running it up the middle, so it's certainly possible, and I think this plan would have been our best odds at that juncture of the game.

Just watched their coaches show. Nice production and coach seems ultra confident about the upcoming game although he was careful to compliment our program and noted how close we are to having a better record. Very complimentary to Frank and admits we were the model program in the MAC that he strives to emulate.
It serves to illustrate how fast the wheels came off for our program and that we are still in free fall in my opinion.
Let me know when we bottom out and someone in authority actually decides to be proactive. I think it is a dangerous assumption to conclude that we are all in for a 3-5 year rebuild.

It’s OUr new plan.

All the other MAC schools are maxed out on recruiting so we watch the OHSA playoffs and we can offer those studs that shine during those games.

With 32 extra teams in each division in the OHSA playoffs OHIO can finds lots of candidates they can try to develop.
