I actually think this is a pretty accurate prediction.

And this would be how we continue to be average and not win the MAC.

Oh, you mean like when Coach Solich was here?

Yes that’s exactly what I mean. I don’t know why he’s so loved he never even won the MAC.

Ok, Monroe, we get it. we never won the MAC so his entire body of work is irrelevant. Obviously we aren't allowed to enjoy the bowl games, winning the east, the bowl wins, win against Pitt. win AT Penn State. Two blowout wins against Kansas (yes, Kansas. I know they're not good, but any P5 scalp is worth celebrating. They outspend us 10-1 if not more. f**k em if they can't beat us.) Very competitive games at Tennessee. Owning Marshall for most of his tenure. Owning Miami for most of his tenure. Owning Temple for their short stay in the MAC.

Very good! I also found this:

No scandals, good graduation rate and his teams were competitive.

No scandals? That's some selective memory. But o.k.

You forgot the 3-point win against Illinois on a last second field goal. That gave OHIO a 3-2 all-time record against the Illini, the only B1G school we have the overall edge on.

That was a great win over a 2-10 Illinois team! I am surprised that the students did not burn Court Street after that one!

No, not kidding. As I see things, there are some schools where there is a big difference between what a president brings to the university and a football coach.

Let me cite a few examples - with which you might disagree. Here we go. At Alabama I see Saban bringing more to the university than the president. At Ohio during the Ping years, I saw him bringing more to the university than the football coaches. During the first years of the Solich era, I saw a tie between him and Rod McDavis as to whom was bringing the most to the university. At Stanford, I would call the situation not so much as a tie but as a neutral. Reason: When thinking of Stanford, I think not of the football coach nor the president. Why? Because while relatively few could name Stanford's president, more could name the deans of its virtually autonomous professional schools - with the football coach being an after-thought.

I can not spell his name, but I know he is Canadian, a Rhodes Scholar and a leader in the field of brain development and repair.

I don't know enough about these things to say with any certainty, but this take definitely surprises me. How would we quantify what Solich brought to the University?

Well, since you brought it up, that was a great win. Compare their budget to ours. Just like Kansas. 10-1 $ advantage if it's a nickel. Maybe more. F**k em if they can't beat us.

Look doofuses, how many times can we have this argument? Everyone wants a conference title, but it's not the only good thing the program can do and could do. It's disappointing we never got one, but your assertion that we were merely average and accomplished little under Frank is factually incorrect.

As you can see, I said at the beginning of that post that folks might disagree with my take. How to quantify what Solich brought? My first thought was a significant increase in visibility for the university. His first home game as coach: National TV coverage of an OT win over Pitt before a packed Peden. In the ensuing years more such coverage and more visibility. I tend to think that some alums who hadn't opened their wallets started doing so. And some who had been opening them opened wider or more often.

Agree or disagree?

Alabama is not an elite school by any stretch. If kids are simply going there for the football team, what does that say? Maybe if we had a Phil Nike donor who ponied up 500M. We have a little problem with the size of the Athens metro market and spending a lot of money on athletics will not bring the return some of you crave. Just look at the crowds on the MACTion broadcasts. Sometimes there are more people on this message board.

I would be happy if the athletic department would make a decree they are increasing the maintenance budget by $500,000 a year so slush funds would be available for fixing the therapy pools.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round

Worth noting that Alabama ranks ahead of OU academically in basically every ranking.

I'm not sure I have enough info to agree or disagree. My inclination's towards disagreeing, but it's really hard to say. For me, the national TV coverage feels separate from Solich's influence. Most of our TV appearances are negotiated by the MAC, or are the result of a deal negotiated by out of conference opponents. I don't know where the Pitt game came from, but suspect it was likely on the schedule before Frank showed up.

That said, if there was data that showed that alumni giving increased post-Frank that would certainly change my thinking. I remember looking not long ago and seeing that OU was well behind a lot of our MAC peers in terms of alumni giving, but that was US News and World Report data and I'm not sure how much weight to give it.

My bias is towards the idea that alumni don't really care about Ohio Football. Student engagement was low when I was in school, we haven't won anything meaningful, and while friends from OU will always suggest meeting when OU in the NCAA Tourny, they've never suggested a trip to Detroit for the MAC Championship game, or a trip to Boise for the Potato Bowl. But again, that's just my bias. The data may show otherwise.

If I saw that correctly, Ruhle got $62M for 7 years in 2020. He’s owed a boat load of cabbage.

That doesn’t make them an elite institution. We are not elite institution, either. We are good, which is okay.

You anti Frank critics just forget that OHIO under Frank did not lose to the Mighty O$U that one game in Columbus compliments of Tresses. Look it up!

As for no MACC that is true. But it is all because of the players not making key plays.

At the half OHIO 20, NIU 0

2nd half--
OHIO QB misses high on an easy throw that would have been a first down
OHIO receiver drops a likely TD bomb
OHIO db drops a very easy INT in the flats after jumping the route and most likely dropped it because it had pick 6 written all over it
OHIO's dependable punter shanks a punt.

If just one of these athletes made a play they have made 100's of times there likely would not have been enough time for NIU to take it to OT.

How must it have felt to have a talented team winning the game and then your stars all four of them here cannot make a simple play! Instead they crap the bed.

OH and couldn't there have been a real OHIO win in Columbus if a certain guy hadn't muffed a punt, a cheating official decides not to cheat and throws the flag and the wide open streaking receiver catches Bo's bomb instead of letting it go right through his finger tips while 10 yards past the nearest Buckeye.

And, don't forget the blatant clipping not called on the Buckeye's go-ahead TD.

There's an interesting article by Paul Myerberg of USA Today about Rhule's
potential popularity with P5 teams.

per above he’s still owed $40 million. it will be offset by any salary he gets paid by a college. one approach being discussed is he can sign with a college and get paid $1 a year for the first 4 years and tell the AD to use the savings to pay for highly coveted assistants or infrastructure. in essence let the panthers fund him. another attractive angle for any P5. on a comical note saw a blurb that folks in buffalo think he’d be perfect for the bulls program. like that’s the job he’d take. lol
