Frank Solich set to return to Memorial Stadium for Nebraska spring game.

The former Nebraska football coach, controversially fired almost 20 years ago, will be honored at the April 22 spring game, NU Athletic Director Trev Alberts announced on his monthly "Sports Nightly" radio program.

“We’re going to have an opportunity to honor Frank and his family,” Alberts said, adding that there will be another announcement during the spring game related to Solich. “…We’ve been working on this while, but I think it’s time, and I’m really looking forward to thanking him for everything he’s done as a player, as a coach and also honor him for what he did after left here.”

Alberts said NU put “a lot of work” into getting Solich back to campus. The 78-year-old former coach, who won 173 games at the collegiate level, was reluctant to be honored, Alberts said, because Solich didn’t want to be specifically singled out for an honor.

Solich served as Nebraska’s head coach from 1998 to 2003. He won 58 games and guided the Huskers to the 2001 National Championship game. Following his tenure at his alma mater, Solich coached at Ohio for 16 seasons, where he took the Bobcats to 11 bowl games.

His son lives there. I hope he's doing good. He must be if he's agreed to go back to Nebraska, but it's a little scary. Kind of like a mending fences before you go type situation. I hope he comes back to OU next season for a couple football games.

I think he will. He follows the program pretty closely.

I would have liked to see Frank coach Ohio in a gam versus Nebraska...too bad he was unable to hold on through 2026.

He told many that he had no interest in playing them. Didn't want to embarrass either program.

Wonder if they'll actually sell out for that or if a donor will need to buy 6,000 tickets to keep the streak alive.

The streak actually started with donors (local companies) buying large amounts of tickets, and giving them away, to customers, to employees, to whoever. There is no reason they couldn't do the same thing elsewhere.
