BVP is a cool dude. This was the expected outcome, but I was holding out hope. He's given everything there is to give to OU. Time to move onto other things/programs. Wish him nothing but success and hope to see him on CBS and in the NCAAs next year wherever he goes.

He leaves a massive hole in our roster. I shudder at the thought of AJ Clayton as our starting PF.

In my mind we have 3 solid, locked-up starters in Sears, AJ Brown and Wilson and a whole bunch of meh and question marks.

Need another impact player from the portal stat.

Yep, agreed. Can't blame BVP -- he's given everything to OU in his 14 years here.

Excited to see where he lands and how he holds up against bigger conference play. Looks like he's a Management major, so hope he lands somewhere with a great MBA program. UVA's been mentioned, and that's a good one.

Also: I think we're going to be bad next year.

I will say that the next 60 days will probably be the most important of Boals career at Ohio. As many have pointed out, he needs to find two impact gems in the portal that will be immediate contributors.

It would be awesome to see him play for the Badgers. He could fill the role of Chris Vogt had as a grad transfer from UC. UW is pretty strong academically too.

An often under-discussed part of these things is love life...anyone know if he has a LT significant other and if so where she is from / is going?

Losing Ben is a big blow, I am still bullish on the team for next season, mainly because it seems that this recruiting class is better than we have seen in a long time. At one point it was ranked in the top 50 nationally by at least 1 publication. Was the DJ/Ivo/Keely/Horne/Kinney class even rated that highly?

Obviously ratings don't mean anything until they take the court, but it does seem that we have 2-3 guys coming in that could run right into the rotation along with Sears, Roderick (hoping he finds his stroke this summer), Miles Brown, and Wilson.

I also believe Clayton and Ezuma will both take big steps forward next year. Clayton showed his skill and shooting range early in the year and in the last game of the season when Carter got hurt. He needs to add some muscle in order to rebound more consistently.

Ezuma needs to work on his footwork, but you can see the skill there. Just needs to keep working on that over the summer. DeVaughn Washington only averaged 0.9ppg and 1.1 rpg his freshman year and then became a starter the following year, bumping those averages us to 6.7 and 4.4 and 11.3 and 5.4 his junior year. I think we would all be very happy if Ezuma made a similar leap next year.

Clayton's freshman year was about as impactful as Tony Campbell's freshman year. I think he will have a much larger impact next year.

Clayton only turned 18 halfway through MAC play. The experience he gained this season is going to be priceless moving forward. Not only is it realistic to expect he could add 10-20 lbs of muscle this offseason, it's not unreasonable to think he might still add another inch or more.

I've seen crazier things happen.

It's possible this decision is based on BVP looking for a school that offers a particular grad program that is not offered at Ohio. If so, that might narrow the list of possible landing spots for BVP, no?

Edit: not sure where BVP is education-wise. Maybe involves a doctoral program.

This is what I was thinking. BVP is looking for a degree program that isn't at Ohio, or at least he's looking at it from the angle of having been here for 5 years and just wants to try someplace new with his last year. Can't blame him either way.

And let us all remember, BVP didn't set the world on fire as a redshirt freshman. He was solid but not what he is today. He worked at it and did that but only after a year of rehab and learning. AJ was thrown into the fire at age 17! He will be just fine!

I also am a bit nervous about the potential of Clayton as the starting 4 next season.

Hate to do this but all the examples brought up of previous frosh that made major improvements were athletic.

I just don't see natural, fluid movement on the court with Clayton. When I watched Clayton, I saw a player that was struggling to keep up with the speed of the game but could occasionally hit a wide open 3 when the ball found him.

I'm not a scout so feel free to tell me I'm wrong.

Idk if I'm wrong but I can see Ezuma / Clayton swapping at the PF position for next year. Now, they both need work this offseason but could be potentially in for some breakout campaigns from both. Also probably the most important offseason of Boal's coaching tenure.

The portal is boiling over with talent right now.

U of Memphis alone had THREE 4-star guys enter the portal today.

Talented hoopsters are there for the taking. Murray St. has 8 guys in the portal.

If he is wanted and he really thinks he can play my list would be Duke, North Carolina, or UVA because of the academics and then the basketball. While UW is top shelf, go for the climate change.

I agree that Ohio needs to get some talented players out of the portal. But it may not necessarily come from the pool of players you're referencing due to academics.

Not that there is anything wrong with the academics at Murray
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/murray-state-univers...
there are players in the portal from Princeton, Rice, Vandy, Stanford, etc.

Clayton played for us at age 17. This kid could turn into something special. Give him a break.

Another thought on BVP: Perhaps he's hoping for an offer from a West Coast school so he can be close to and support Jay Preston for a year?

BVP already knows where he is going (and has for some time). He's not entering the portal "to see" - There is a space and offer already in place. He will most likely wait until after the Final Four and also wait until players at his landing spot have entered the portal as well. Good luck young man - will forever be a Bobcat.

At first thought, because of his academic prowess I pondered whether he was considering going to the Ivy League. However, since they don't give athletic scholarship he could have already completed the process. I wonder if we are missing something. I know there is a great deal of discussion about Wisconsin. However, perhaps he is considering an elite academic school in a power conference; Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Stanford or Northwestern? Outside of Notre Dame, these aren't perennial Big Dance attendees. They just might need a muscular forward who can shoot. Just a thought.

I don't where he's going -- I can imagine two or three places -- but it seems he's taken advantage of his opportunity at Ohio. Out of high school he had offers from Ohio, Memphis and three Horizon schools. Now it looks like he's written his own ticket to whatever school he wants. Good for him. But wherever he goes, he'll always be a Bobcat.

He was the 2019 MAC Freshman of the Year (in a landslide vote).

I agree with this and think Clayton has loads of potential, but he also is not on the same trajectory as BVP was. BVP probably benefitted a lot from his redshirt and averaged 8.6 pts and 6.8 rbs his first season. Clayton was thrown into the fire at 17 and averaged 3.3 pts and 2.0 rbs. And we all know Clayton did very little scoring in the paint. Hopefully he'll put on 20-40 pounds of muscle and keep developing. He has the makings of a good stretch four but he isn't one yet.

BVP was also a freshman on a team that was NOT very good. OHIO finished 6-12 in the East and 14-17 overall. Little harder to crack the lineup for AJ, than the situation that both BVP and Carter came into.

2019 was also not a great year for MAC freshmen.
