Last year some fans voiced their discontent with this by not attending games and not watching on TV, and probably by not buying NFL merchandise. Will that trend continue this year, or will attendance go back where it was? If it's the former, I suspect this new trend will quietly go away. If it's the latter, I expect it will continue.

I wonder what type of person you are.....

Maybe try considering who these players are and what their backgrounds consist of. How ignorant of you to call these guys "spoiled millionaires". Lack of sympathy and compassion is what makes the country even more divided. Judging by your name I shouldn't be surprised 🙄

Personally I'm hoping they all kneel. This idea that because they make millions they have some responsibility to uphold some belief system is rather interesting. If I'm not mistaken every player in any league that cuts, earned their spot on that team through many years of hard work.

Having just driven from Carbondale, Illinois, to Athens yesterday across southern Illinois, southern Indiana, and southern Ohio, judging by the signs along the way and Confederate flags I saw flying it really isn't hard to figure out.

What does them being millionaires have to do with anything? They are using their public platform to protest on behalf of the those who don't have a platform to protest.

I thought the segment where the ROTC was out on the turf of Peden the last game was interesting. The pledged to defend the constitution of America but didn't mention the flag. For a minute I thought I was in Egypt because that is exactly how their military backed regime sees things and they happen to be one of the largest recipients of US military aid.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl

I have always thought that this was the issue here and why people have such strong opinions on this one way or the other. It is all in how you see the flag. When you get down to it being willing to put your life of the line for the Constitution, rule of law, and American Ideals is sometimes required. Being willing to die for a piece of cloth or symbol makes absolutely no sense if you think about it. Our young men and women are bravely putting their life of the line for American values. However, if you phrase it that way you put some weight on the shoulders of an 18 year old to decide what values actually are worth fighting for. If you did that you would not have as cohesive of a military. You end up selling the recruits a more simple story. So we reach the point as a nation where to some values are what is important and the flag is just a piece of cloth and to others the flag is something much more.

One vet's view. FB friends know that I don't post often and when I do prefer to discuss history, travel, books, veterans and international happenings. I largely avoid politics, not because I don't follow them - I do - but because so many folks have so much to say about politics. Today I'm about to post on things some might view as politics; I see it as something broader. Some pro athletes are kneeling during the national anthem. Yes, it disturbs me. But it doesn't send me spiraling into apoplexy. Question: How many FB friends, while preparing to watch a game on TV, stand for the anthem? I don't. Heck, before today I've never thought to do so. Another question: How many FB friends know that a few years ago Congress signed off on a resolution saying it was OK for vets to salute - not place right hand over heart - during the anthem? (It was a resolution because there is no law regarding the flag, only flag courtesy. Let's hope we never have such a law.) Now, what genuinely galls me is when President Trump trumpets anything having to do with patriotism. Why? The man sought - and received - no fewer than 5 deferments to avoid military service

Agreed. If they were spoiled millionaires they wouldn't care about social issues.

Unless, of course, they were running for public office and found it politically expedient to say they care.

I've seen three examples of men calling for the firing or bashing on the field of those who take a knee during the anthem. Trump, Jerry Jones and Franco Harris. All three have the same thing in common: they did not serve in the military.

Don't forget this crap starting with Kap kneeling when Osama was President. Did he serve the country? Some hollow arguments make it a Trump issue my friends.

It's not a Trump issue, but Trump has brought it to the foreground. I would expect that he will amplify the effect in both directions.

For me the interesting thing is watching the free market at work. Obviously the revenues went down significantly last year in pro football as a result of it, and the initial response was for the owners to quietly discourage it and hope it goes away. It didn't, and with Trump publicizing the issue, the effect should increase dramatically.

One plausible path that we could go from here is to see dramatically more players doing this, and some fans doing it as well, followed by and even more dramatic drop in attendance and viewership, and a huge decrease in NFL revenues. Since many of the costs of an NFL franchise are fixed, that in turn would likely lead to a huge drop in the size of player contracts, at which point the player's union might discourage it's members from doing this, but it might be too late, and revenues might never recover. Could this effectively kill pro football? I don't think it can end it, but it can certainly dramatically affect the economics, and could reduce the size of player contracts back to 1980's levels. It would also reduce the size of coaching contracts, obviously, and that might help bring back some sanity to coaching contracts at the college level.

I couldn't care less about the NFL and it's rich white owners but can not care more about the issues facing our society today. On the front page of today's Dispatch is another in a long line of disturbing stories about education performance and socio economic status. When white players start kneeling too, we'll start making progress on what ails our society. Until then, a President who publicly calls people "son of a bitches" will do nothing but divide us so that there is no focus on the meaning and message of the great documents of our history and those who gave their lives to defend those statements for the future.

I am not a LeBron fan but I love how he's using his platform to speak up on issues he believes are important in our country. Something the superstars a generation before LeBron avoided for various reasons.

And kudos to the white football players who lent their support to their black teammates during the national anthem in games preceding this weekend. Not an easy decision to make but the right one.

The national anthem singer in Detroit also took a knee as he finished the song.

Actually it started with the escalating attitude and culture of our police departments in this country. Calling our former president Osama only shows how much ignorant bigotry still exists.
