I haven't read the 5000 page NCAA rule book, but I'm pretty sure if that is true, they are breaking practice limits. You can't just practice as a full team all summer.

Donuts you bring up a good point!

NCAA RULES AND REGULATIONS
An important role of NCAA rules and regulations is to allow student athletes to succeed in school while they are members of their college or university teams. During regular season and championship season, practices and games can be intense and time consuming. For baseball, the NCAA bans off-season practices associated with the college or college’s own coaching staff to give baseball players the chance to recover from the season. Another benefit is to prevent competing teams from having advantages from extra practice.
OFF-SEASON INFORMATION
The off-season begins at the end of the NCAA baseball championship game. During the summer, student athletes may not participate in school-sponsored or coach-organized baseball practices. The first pre-season practice may take place on the fourth day of classes or on a specified date in September, depending on which comes first. During this part of the off-season, teams must take at least one day off from practicing per week. Practices include weight training, conditioning and practicing skills and team plays.
CONSIDERATIONS
The off-season is an opportunity for mental and physical recovery. Athletes can also use the time for strength training and conditioning to reduce injuries when official practices begin again, according to Nyack College. Baseball players in the NCAA can take advantage of the forced time away from their regular teams and practices to improve their own skills. NCAA rules and regulations allow baseball players to play on independent, amateur teams without restrictions.

So basically the coaches can't have anything to do with it.

Come on, folks. Ohio has Compliance people. Who, knock on wood, have done a good job. You can agree or disagree with this strategy, but throwing out allegations of NCAA rules violations is disingenuous.

The whole situation does seem odd, but I'm with Ted that I am sure they are making sure they are compliant, even if it is thru some sort of loophole.

Agree. I don't like it, and it doesn't really "smell" right...but I can't imagine that they're overtly violating NCAA rules here.

As long as no coaches are present it is fine. They can do captains practices whenever they want.

Considering how bad the program has been, I'm not opposed to an outside the box approach.

Why will it hurt? Just because it's different?

If I was a player, I'd rather stick around Athens with my university teammates and maybe even take a class or two than be stuck with some strange family in a random town for the summer playing with unfamiliar players.

I've been supportive of coach but I'm not sure this is a great idea. I don't think it will effect recruiting a great deal because most kids won't know what they are missing, but depending on the league you play in, some of the most memorable times you'll have is playing summer ball with guys from all over the country, in front of large crowds, signing autographs, etc. It's similar to a minor league feel.

Most of the guys stay in 3-4 bedroom apartments with teammates and not with host families.

The thing everyone's missing, though, is that summer ball is one of the best times to get in front of scouts and prove yourself in front of higher-level competition. Guys with pro aspirations will not come somewhere that they know they'll be unable to play in the summer.

AND...if you don't think this will be used against us in recruiting, your delusional. Look for us to be losing out on many a recruiting battle.

Thank YOU!!!!!! Exactly what I'm getting at! Thes kids want to play in the Big Leagues, and the best ones will play in front of way more scouts in quality summer ball than they will sitting in Athens. They will also play MUCH better competition than some inter squad game.

Why not give it a chance, we have to dig ourselves out of this hole somehow.  Always so many critics, support the team and see what happens.  People are always reluctant to be different.

How many games did you attend? Plenty of support, but does not mean we have to agree.

Is it really that much better competition? Most of the rosters I've seen from the Great Lakes summer league, which is where almost all Ohio players play, include a large number of non-Division I players. Sure, there are some guys from the Big Ten and SEC, but not many, and I would think the ones that are really that good probably play in the Cape Cod league. Are there really that many scouts that show up for these games?

We won 14 games last year, so I would highly doubt that the competition in an intra-squad game was very good. The other thing is the guys get more opportunities to compete, to play games and learn from real life situations.

And some of you fail to go to some of those games, there are quality players from quality baseball schools in the GLSCL, but I'm talking way beyond that league, take Marc Krauss, by playing in wooden bat leagues, scouts got a legit chance to see how he handles a real bat. Guys like Russell showed what they can do when not pitching to juiced up bats. There are many values to Collegiate summer leagues, and I will ask again, if this is so great why is no one else doing this?
