Ohio thumps Western Michigan 89-58 in MAC opener

Bobcats connect on 16 of 31 3-pointers

ATHENS – Ohio began Mid-American Conference play with a resounding 89-58 victory against Western Michigan on Tuesday night at The Convo.

The Bobcats (9-3, 1-0 MAC) had a double-digit lead barely more than five minutes into the game and continued to roll from there, leading 46-25 at halftime.

Antonio Campbell finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Kenny Kamisnki and Jordan Dartis each scored 12 points and Jaaron Simmons had 11 points.

"I thought we were sharp in darn near every aspect tonight," Ohio coach Saul Phillips said.

Campbell began the game with a 3-pointer, and Ohio never trailed. Dartis followed with a trey, and then Kaminski hit two of them to make it 12-4. Simmons drained a shot from deep, and then Dartis hit again to make it 18-6 all on 3-pointers.

Ohio had an 8-0 run later in the half, going up 35-16 on a Campbell 3-pointer with 5:15 left in the first half.

Western Michigan (4-9, 0-1 MAC) had its best stretch of the night with an 8-0 run that cut its deficit to 19 points with 11:38 to go, but Campbell answered with a 3-pointer. The Bobcats’ lead maxed out at 83-51 on a Gavin Block 3-point play with 3:01 remaining. Those were Block’s only points, but tallied eight assists.

Ohio shot 50 percent from the field, including 16 of 31 (51.6 percent) on 3-pointers. Campbell was 6 of 9 from downtown, Kaminski made 4 of 6, and Dartis was 3 of 6. Western Michigan shot just 33.3 percent, including a 4-of-16 effort from deep.

Tucker Haymond and Thomas Wilder had nine points each to lead the Broncos. Wilder added a team-best 10 rebounds.

The Bobcats host Kent State at 9 p.m. Friday on ESPNU at The Convo.
