Mitchell, Hunter get help from James in Ohio win

Bobcats top Bears for 5th place in Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas Shareef Mitchell and Jaylin Hunter continued to put up big numbers and got some help from Elmore James as Ohio topped Brown 82-77 for fifth place Sunday in the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship at the Baha Mar Convention Center.

Mitchell scored 24 points, Hunter added 21 points, and Elmore James tallied 18 points for the Bobcats (4-2).

Ohio built a 38-29 lead and went up 58-39 on a James 3-point play, but Brown slowly worked its way back into it in the second half and had a chance late. Free throws by Nana Owusu-Anane made it 67-63 with 6:47 remaining.

Hunter converted a three-point play and Mitchell added two free throws to put Ohio back up by nine. The Bears (2-6) cut their deficit to four points again on an Owusu-Anane three-point play with 4:16 to go and then to three at 76-73 on an Aaron Cooley 3-pointer with 2:47 remaining.

Brown had a pair of 3-point attempts that could have tied the game before Mitchell connected on a jumper in the paint to make a two-possession game with only 48 seconds to go. James put back a missed free throw by Mitchell to help ice it a short time later.

AJ Clayton connected on a 3-pointer midway through the first half to put Ohio ahead 24-12, and the lead later reached 35-16 on a pair of Hunter free throws and then 38-19 on an AJ Brown 3-pointer. The Bears closed on a 10-0 run to cut their deficit to single digits.

AJ Brown had just eight points on 3-of-10 shooting. Clayton scored just three points in 19 minutes before fouling out. Gabe Wiznitzer provided six points and six rebounds in 21 minutes.

Kino Lilly Jr. led the Bears with 21 points, while Owusu-Anane scored 19 points with 11 rebounds. Brown committed 18 turnovers.

The Bobcats host Delaware at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Convo.
