Is it just me or is Coach Boals playing the bench more with better depth, and does playing the bench keep them interested from shopping portal options? Seems to me if we can get past Ball State the team depth my play in our favor with back to back to back games for a ticket to the dance. Just sayin.

He hasn't really changed his substitution patterns from the beginning of the season. The biggest change was sitting Hadaway early in the MAC schedule. Then he moved Sheldon completely out of the rotation late in MAC schedule which needed to be done. Other than that you know what's coming. The Whiz comes in for DW3 at the first TV timeout if not before. And then it's Brown...Baker...Clayton...not necessarily in that order.

Guess I'm thinking more than in previous years where discontent yielded portal options.

Regardless of how you look at it, I do believe our bench is more of a strength than in past seasons. They don't light the world on fire but we do have some guys that can enter games and make an impact.

The transfer portal impacts how you treat underclassmen. Players like AJ Brown need to get immediate playing time at schools like Ohio. Elmore James has proven he deserves minutes as well.

Even Sheldon and Hadaway got some run before it became obvious that they needed more time to grow by sitting and watching. Players don't want to wait 2-3 years for their opportunities anymore.

Where you run into problems is many players start looking for greener pastures if they produce beyond expectations while others look to bolt if they don't get enough playing time.

That's where culture comes into play. It's a delicate balance and you have to hope your players buy into your coach's vision and enjoy playing with their teammates. In those instances, you can sometimes get players to stick around a bit longer which helps in the long run.

+1 The culture is all important. I think in his new era you'll see some non-P6 schools flourish because they keep players due to the culture that a coach builds. Let's hope OHIO is one of those places.

Let's hope this approach pays off this summer and the players return because of "The Culture". Free agency in college sports is a brand new ball game.

I'll tell you what I am impressed with Sheldon and Hadaway's body language and effort when they do get in. Hadaway came in cold the other night and really played well. He played hard and had the best dunk of the year. Ajay has done the same -- his shooting woes I am sure have not helped his confidence but I don't mind the ball in his hands for 2 to 3 minutes a game and he plays hard and physical on defense. The guy I keep seeing and missing is Ezuma. I felt like he was improving last year. Hopefully he has taken advantage of this year off and worked on his body and his game. Dude is athletic as heck and will be a key moving forward next year.

I think Hadaway could be very good. His athleticism is clear and I think he can play a lot bigger than he is. I think he will at least take over Ben Roderick's role.

I've had the vibe the past few weeks that Boals is "saving" AJ Brown a bit, managing his minutes carefully. He's a potential difference maker in Cleveland and it feels like, since that mid-season injury time, his minutes have been carefully managed.

I have a feeling we're gonna be seeing quite a bit of Hadaway/AJ at the 4/5 next season. Elmore/AJB at the 2/3. Hunter at 1. Everyone else filling in around.

Miles (I feel he's back, his role is solid, we will need back-up PG help), Rod (perhaps), IJ first up... Wiz when the situation demands it.

Hadaway and AJ can *hopefully* play that similar style BVP/JC role from last season, where I think Boals is more comfortable running and stretching out teams.

I agree with many that I do think Hadaway can stick. He has great energy and has a nose for the ball. He really needs to improve his shot. He made his first shot of his career....a 3 at Belmont and then showboated a bit with the student section. Since then...many jumpers and free throws have nearly brought down backboards. Get a 1,000 shots up a day during the off-season kid.

So do you think the team and coaches read "Bobcat Attack" for their amusement and enjoyment ? I always wondered if that was the case, and if they are forbidden from jumping on our chats & topics.

I think reading the drivel on this board, my own posts included, by a member of the coaching staff would be grounds for an immediate "for cause" firing.

But that's just like, your opinion, man.

First, I was being sarcastic. Second, I limited my remarks to coaches not players. However, there was a kernel of truth in that sarcasm. I wouldn't think much of a coach that paid any mind to this board, and I suspect that almost none of them ever have.

My guess is Boals might just might visit this board in the off-season. I think players visit this board probably a little bit more than we think. The parents of the players are probably here quite frequently.

I was quoting the Big Lebowski. That is to say, I was also being sarcastic, and agreeing with you.

I'm sure some may lurk, but it's likely/probably not suggested nor anything they should care about.

Edit to say - except for Quinn Corna. He needs that NIL $$$.

One bench player who could step up and help us make some tourney noise: DeVon Baker. He's a guy who can find his scoring lanes and has shown in the past that he can score: double digit average in previous years and scored double digits in his first 5 games here but has not done so since, and subsequently lost playing time. Hoping it's Baker time among others. Go OHIO!

Baker could be the unlikely "silver bullet" that has been underused given the competition for playing time.
