...figures out how to stay on the floor and out of constant foul trouble? Early thoughts through an exhibition and one official game: doesn't look like it. He was extremely effective on the floor against Gulf Coast, but was very limited with fouls. The guy is talented and we need him on the floor, not the bench.

There were a number of plays against Gulf Coast where there was body contact from Tony leaping in his vertical plane to challenge shots. I think those will be called fouls from less disciplined referees.

. . . also thought Tony got beat off the dribble too often in the opener.

If he's matched up against Martin tonight that will be a challenge to stay out of foul trouble.

Biggest disappointment so far this year against competition that is inferior to mid/upper level MAC. Forget the 3's. Man up inside. Move your feet on D.

And yet we still won both games! He is going to explode against a few teams and I hope it's in clutch situations. There is NO ONE in the MAC that can beat him. He will manhandle Isaiah Johnson. CMU has no bigs. Buffs are done as well. Tava out for Western. Big Tone will figure it out. If not, Wadly, despite NO POINTS still had a solid set of minutes with big boards and some big blocks. Dude is going to be solid in the post. Doug Taylor also is good for 5 minute spurts!

I'm not giving up at all. Floating on the perimeter is not where we need him. Post up. Position and Feet on D.

More foul trouble last night, and a couple of them were just horrible fouls. Not something I expect to see from a Junior that we need on the floor. His 4th almost seemed like a frustration foul.

Last year the team's 3pt% was .341. By comparison Tony's 3pt% was .341.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out with Tone. I hope he can find a balance and stay on the court more. But I also enjoy seeing Wadly get some important mins, along with brief Doug Taylor stints. Come MAC play I'll be much more concerned if there's still a fouling problem. But for now I'm wanting him to go out and play his game.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

Hasn't the impact of Tony being on the floor for big minutes been remarkable lately? It's amazing how he stuffs the stat sheet when he can stay out there. Keep it up, big man!

Every time we discuss bigs shooting 3's, particularly in Saul's system, I feel almost obligated to point something out. It is quite likely that guys like Tony are given the freedom by the coaching staff to take those three's if they can make them at a decent rate. Tony can make them, and pull other bigs away from the lane in the process when they have to guard him. I won't argue that his most important asset to this team is points in the paint and rebounding. I just feel like the players are given that freedom.

I don't know the numbers but it feels like his numbers of three point attempts has drastically gone down lately.

The last two games we've only taken 14 threes. Might be because we shot so poorly in both (3-14 & 2-14). Interestingly, we have shot much better from deep in our losses (41.4%) than our wins (34.6%).

Tony attributed some of the recent upgrade in his performance to classes being over and thus reducing the stress of balancing classes and practices and games.

Now that classes will be resuming, I wonder how this will impact the basketball end of things?

That's a pretty creative on Tony's part (not really). Doesn't every other guy on the court have classes too, or at least in theory? Just saw that Clemson is in session this week and Alabama is not, thus Clemson is only permitted to practice a maximum 20 hours this week and Alabama doesn't have that restriction. That excuse is a little more reasonable.

Last night's game shows that it really is a major problem when Tony can't stay on the floor.

His 5th foul was, in my opinion, a bad call, but I totally agree with your assessment regarding the offensive end. Wadly did an adequate job, and I think Doug Taylor can contribute. Honestly, I think coach needs to routinely give those two minutes on purpose to develop their games a little more quickly. Tony is gonna have one of these types of games more than once this year.

If memory serves me correctly Tony had foul problems last year as well. I think his issue is that he has slow feet i.e. late to the D and that causes him to use his arms to defend rather than getting to his spot before the man he is guarding does.
I don't know if he will or can make the necessary adjustments, time will tell.

Amazing. The young man goes a month with a whole string of double doubles but now people are pointing to this NIU game as the trend. I think the NIU game is more an aberration. Also, word is that refs have been instructed to call fouls closer again like they did early in the season. It's a matter of adjusting to the reality of conference play.

just what the MAC needs. More foul calls.

Tony has a reputation that he needs to shake. he picked up his fifth foul on a terrible call Weds, but when he has games like his, it's usually that he makes a couple bad fouls away from the ball, or chasing a guard up the floor and hacking him from behind. He's being aggressive in that situation, but he can't be the guy trying to strip the opponents point guard. It's those bad fouls that make the bad call later much more costly. As everyone agrees, we need Tony on the floor to have ANY shot at this thing.

What? Is going to college or is he going to basketball? Did he really say that?

Alan, I'm perplexed by your surprise. Isn't it ok that he's honest that school causes him stress? Don't most people have stresses that can affect the different areas of their lives? He's 21 years old, do you expect him to have the ability to completely separate all the things in his life?

HAHA

School caused me some stress. High pressure, short deadlines, tough classes, competition to get into the next level.

Glad no one asked me that question just before 2nd semester of my Jr year. Physics, Organic Chem, Microbiology, Genetics, Logic, Spectrophotometry in intersession and Benedictine Contributions to Western Civilization.....I would have no doubt said it stressed me..... still remember the 1st semester classes to this day

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
