Uncorked - Athens first wine bar - is now open for business in the Station Street area (old Oak Room location). Stopped there last evening and had a wonderful time. 20+ wines by the glass with a choice of 6 flights, small bites, comfortable seating and a gracious brother and sister team working very hard to provide a new and unique experience in Athens. Bottles also available for carryout or bagging to go if you only want to enjoy a glass or two while there. Check it out if you get a chance - I believe you'll be impressed.

It's fantastic and fills a niche in Athens. In addition to serving pretty sophisticated local ciders, it's kind of a grown-up's cocktail bar with excellent local snacks. The proverbial "clean, well-lighted place" that Ernest Hemingway once described. Only caveat: It's expensive for Athens. I love Jackie O's, Tony's and many other uptown stalwarts, but I find myself at the Cider House quite a few weekends that I make it down.

Does it have any Alsacian wines?

What is street address of Uncorked? I ask because I am planning to come down for the Buffalo game and stay over night - meaning I can imbibe a bit without worrying about driving home in the dark to North Canton.

The day I choose a wine bar over my cadre of Uptown haunts is the day that Father Time has beaten me.

But I could be swayed by the siren call of "small plates" without having to admit my defeat.

Not yet Mike but they do have a very broad selection from around the world - not just a bunch of over oaked California chardonnays.

It's nice now Pete but if it morphs into something like this, I can see you parking in the Station Street lot on a regular basis:

Looks interesting. Run through their Facebook page appears like nice looking place. Can't find a menu anywhere - web site still under construction. Saw some respectable labels pictured. Saw some "iffy" prospects as well ("Blueberry Noir" - ?)

Per MJ's query about "Alsacian" wines - We had a discussion about that terminology last year I believe?

I believe that spelling is appropriate when referring to the language dialect, but not the French wine appellation:

In Alsace - one of my favorite regions which I've visited many times, including last month - I've seen it spelled both ways. Indeed, when writing my first book, I pondered what choice of spelling to employ when referring to both the region and its wines. Riesling, muscat, pinot noir, gewürztraminer, I've become fond of all of them.

Now, if someone opens a scotch, tequila, or brandy bar...

They have a flight of Ohio wines so that's where the blueberry noir comes from. Remember my dear friend, the wine of choice for many in America is still white zinfandel (or white zinfandale as it's pronounced in these parts).

I'm interested in checking out Uncorked. I can attest that West End Cider House is outstanding. Yes, it's a bit expensive compared to some other A-town bars, but it's also cleaner, quieter, and a place that real conversation can be had at a late hour. Besides cider, they make some killer cocktails, even though I'm not a cocktail person.
