Absolutely shameful by Alabama. They got an NIT bid. No reason on earth to fire the coach before the season was over with. There was no need to make some kind of statement. The only thing wrong Anthony Grant did was not win enough games to satisfy the locals. Even if you want to hire a new coach for next year, at least wait until the season is over to release the current coach. This isn't the NBA. They could have waited another week or so.

Anthony Grant is a fine coach. He'll land on his feet somewhere else and be better off for it.

The coach who Grant replaced was also fired by Bama for not winning enough games, too, in their opinion. That was Mark Gottfried, from Crestline, Ohio, who subsequently landed at NC State and is doing quite well there and is in the NCAA Tourney.

wonder if Reggie Weatherspoon will be the interim head coach. Bama plays Illinois in first round of NIT, Groce v Spoon, just like old times.

DePaul might have just found their coach in Grant.

Sadely, I'm beginning to wonder if a year from now there will be a TOS to Illinois thread.

Not sure if you were saying this tongue-in-cheek but I think they should have the right to expect to make the NCAA tournament more than once in six seasons. Ultimately, backsliding in year 5 and 6 (15-21 in conference the last two years) is a good way to get fired. Especially since they've never won more than one game in the SEC Tournament in his tenure. We wouldn't be happy with his results and our budget is about a third of his.

That being said they should have let him have his opportunity to make an NIT run.

I see your first point, and agree with your point on the NIT. Sadly, the reason they're doing it is to get the jump on every team they can for hiring the next coach. This could be solved, but they won't do it.

If Keith Dambrot was going to leave Akron, or get pulled away from Akron, it would have happened by now. He will retire there.

That would be something. Lots of tweets yesterday about Murray State's coach going there. He's a Bama grad.

They beat Illinois by 21 last night.

Message sent. The fanbase wants JG's job. Seem to think he is a nice face in a suit. Can recruit but can't coach and has no clue how to put an offense together.

You may be right, but he was 9-9 in the Big Ten, in the middle of the pack. With a bad year, I would guess that he would be gone. He continues to get pretty good recruits. ESPN ranked his 2015 class at #15. But you never know about what an AD will do with an angry fan base who wants to replace every coach who doesn't win the league championship every year. I think he has at least 1 more year to not go to the NCAA.

Sadly, I think you're wrong. The thing I don't get about fans (like the Illini fans in this case) that want to fire coaches that are still winning more than losing is this:

Who are they going to hire that's better? Some Illini fans have this illusion that every year should be like the years they had under Bill Self. He's clearly one of the top, top coaches in D1, on par at this juncture in his career with guys that are hall of famers. Those types of coaches don't grow on trees. Hopefully Mike Thomas stays the course and lets them continue to build what they've been working on. I think they would have went Dancin' this year if Abrams and Rice played every game.

Would we be happy with the results he's achieved? His overall record looks acceptable but he's 24-30 in conference in three seasons. I'm rooting hard for him but think about how a good number of our fans wanted to run TOS out of town on a rail. JG gave us some of our best memories so we would cut him some slack. The Illinii fans haven't got those memories so they aren't as invested in him. He's got at most two years to put a team on the floor that can compete for a B1G title IMO. Middle of the pack in the MAC wouldn't be good enough for us. Why should it be for them?

Well you cut down his records and then say that he has at most two years to fight for a title. If you are looking at just his record, he should be run out of town now. I just think that the AD has to be looking at improvement the last year and looking at his new class of recruits and will probably give him one more year. I also think that his teams have had some critical injuries. No excuse, but a factor. What I don't know is what his buyout is, but that's not the main driver if alums are willing to buy him out. More importantly perhaps is his relationship with the AD. If it's good, he's got another year probably.

Not sure what they think as from the time I lived in Illinois and subsequently they have always felt like they are a blue blood on par with IU, UK, Kansas ans should be in the dance advancing to FF every year.

I'm not cutting down his record. I'm just stating facts. And no I wouldn't run him out of town now. I think every coach should be given 5 years to build the program in their vision unless they are an abject disaster (see Ronnie Thompson). But if things haven't gotten better after five years then it's probably best to go in a new direction. But my point wasn't about whether he should be fired or not. It was that people were asking who Illinois fans think they are to expect a good team. Essentially saying they should be happy to be where they are and that a first round loss in the NIT is enough. All I'm saying is that if after three seasons of similar results Saul Phillips would definitely be on the hot seat with our fanbase, right or wrong.

Nothing wrong with wanting that, but to get rid of a good coach to hire a great coach requires that great coach to be available and interested. I think the only hire they could have made who might have been better than Groce turned them down before he said yes. There's something to that.
