So who could dig that research up and see if any relevance? Hanging scoreboard vs not - and how program has fared since putting one in/having one - across mid majors - and rank them? My $ says it is an indicator of program success, and Big Dance appearances rate vs the total mid major schools/conferences range.

If that's all it took. Duquesne put one in recently at the Palumbo Center. Also a brand new practice facility with coaches offices and team lounge. Very nice. Look up how much success it brought(bought?)them.

I was making a joke, of course, regarding the scoreboard. I know some think that things like that make a big difference. I do not. One takeaway from that article is the WCC and Gonzaga. How much would the rest of the league hurt if they sought out greener pastures. The MAC is in good shape as long as we stay together. I don't see anyone in our league breaking the barrier. Toledo is the biggest market and could do it, but no one wants to spend the money.

it's funny how you can see the embarrassingly gross inequity of dollars earned vs. dollars received by looking at Northwestern and Michigan State of the B1G where Nwestern has NEVER earned a single penny for the B1G but still received the same payout as Michigan State ($24.5M), while Michigan State personally brought in over twice that amount ($57M). The same principles that the B1G uses to justify this equitable revenue distribution are the same principles that should be applied at the league level. Its further proof that on the football side the 70%/27% split of revenue between P5 and G5 is plain wrong. But I digress...

I have reread that article a few times as it sums up the several atricles that alluded to the fact of the P5 conferences getting fat while the rest fight for scraps. The NCAA leaves it to the conferences to divvy up the shares. I think before the meltdown several years back I was unhappy with the distribution as teams that do not invest still bemefit the same as schools who aspire to make the tourney and advance. The money is kind of obscene with no chance for those on the outside to break in....I thought with the conference shake ups some of that might be redistributed but aside from teams like Butler, Utah and X that ascended conferences there were not many realignments in the money.

We are putting resources into ascending the MAc and staying on top after establishing a sustaining program. I still feel those schools showing a desire to get there should reap the benefit of their investment.

It doesn't appear that the Big Ten is putting any demands on Northwestern. They play in a rickety field house in comparison the rest of the league. You would think they would move them out and move somebody else in. Maybe that is the price they pay for a conference patsy. I seem to recall that the MAC gave Eastern Michigan an ultimatum some years ago regarding facilities improvement.

No doubt Welsh Ryan and Mcgaw in general are dated ....and not like Hinkle or the Palestra but they have been sprucing them up along the way and it is actually a decent atmosphere...I prefer Loyola's redo just to the south but Mcgaw is not really as bad as some make it out to be. The BIG has older and smaller places. Rutgers only seats 8K which is 2K less than Northwestern but they do not have bleachers either.

I am wondering how prominently Northwestern's long history as a BIG cofounder, the mission statement of the U in line with the BIG's academic presence along with the depth of their non revenue sports keeps the BIG from getting hard line with their basketball and football presence....although football has popped up decently through the years.

College basketball was a sport 30 years ago that was about great coaches. Any great program had a great coach at the helm and that was the reason why for its success. Then it became about greed and manipulation of the schedules to maximize the amount of schools a conference got into the tournament. The power conferences don't just have the richer programs, all the programs get many shots at Top 25 teams during conference play. Then the power conference schools load up on money games at home so they end up with super high non-conference winning percentages. Its sad because MAC schools at one time could get Big Ten schools to their arenas but the economics have killed that.

The mids if they make the tourney regularly get labeled a basketball school and that can self perpetuate recruiting. A lot of players like the idea of playing at a school where basketball is the school main athletic focal point. The challenge for a lot of schools making the climb up is scheduling. Some of the schools in the MAC (BGSU, CMU) are viewed as no win situations by other mids to play. Tough opponents without the glamour.

hard to believe that joining a conference in 1896 can continue to pay such dividends 119 years later. B1G fans will defend Northwestern's membership by touting its academic standing, location and status as a founding member but NW's true value to the B1G is that it provides an easy conference win for the true money makers. Same for Indiana, Illinois and Purdue from a football perspective. The true power schools don't want a conference full of equals no more than they want a league full of equals. It's all about stacking the deck for the blessed few. You know, like our economy.

Agreed, Perimeter. It's similar to Major League Baseball. Some at the top are spending and those at the bottom are collecting the luxury tax. You could say that Northwestern and other Big 5 schools are collecting a tax for being the conference whipping boys. They all know where they stand in the food chain.

I am not sure where your reference is coming from. Northwestern was 51st in basketball spending and 48th in overall athletic spending. When you put that in the bigger perspective of the Power 6 and anyone else in the conferences just outside like Mountain West, WCC and others how do you figure 51at of 341 is just raking in money from the top of the conference and sitting on their piles of cash? The 5.5 million they spend on mens bball is not all that far off what the other teams in the conference spend and more than about 300 programs put out. 48th in total expenditures is quite a lot of money to throw back into the non revenue sports and still above those Big East schools that do not have football to split the pie. I think you are misrepresenting and giving a view I am not seeing as i look at the actural numbers.

I am not sure OK ST, G town, Marquette, Pitt or Seton Hall have a very good ROI. tO$U, nebraska, Rutgers are BIG teams below Northwestern but they are not getting as much focus. Why is that? Took out the non power conference teams for the most part. Figures are interesting and useful when talking bout things that require facts.

Borna, good numbers and I stand corrected. Since they have never made the tourney,I was making assumptions that they didn't spend money. They are and the numbers say some interesting things. I'm shocked that OSU only spends that much relative to their ability to spend. It appears to me that you have to be in the 6+M range to compete for all the marbles. Others, like Butler, are getting it done with 4.2, but with the exception of the 2 years they made the final are they in the hunt most years? I don't think so. Then there is IU at 10+, which is lunacy. We need another million to get serious.
