So, let's see, three Big 12 P5 teams have played on neutral courts today and all have lost - to UAB, Georgia State, Butler.

But next year? Given the Selection Committee's chronic memory disorder, we'll no doubt see most all at-large bids going to teams from the P5 conferences, including some finishing at or below .500 in their conferences and getting to 20 wins only because they will have larded their non-conf schedules with cupcake home games.

Jim Schaus could make a genuinely meaningful contribution to college basketball by working for changes in at-large selection criteria - such as at least .500 conference records and at least 3 or 4 non-conf road games.

Man, I wish. I don't think Schaus stands a chance.

Butler is from a power conference. Just happens not to sponsor football.

Butler is from a power conference....NOW....they have made the transition. A bit painfully for the fanbase at first, but now ...the fans look down on the mids as if they never were one on the outside vying for that single bid the Horizon offered.

In advocating for something like this - no matter how much we would love it or it may seem fairer, seems like it could become a hindrance when most ADs aspire to be in the P5 conference. Like biting the hand that they *want* to feed them.

I'm all for it, but just saying it's maybe not the best career move, unless one is completely comfortable in the seat that they're in.

Along these lines - and sorry to bring up a football analogy on the BB board, but does anyone remember the Brian Kelly quotes about 'nobody wants to play us' while HC at CMU. And probably less than 1 year later as HC of Cincinnati, he's vocally calling out to cancel these home/home with the lowly MAC schools (Miami was the specific situation). How quickly one could turn on their past.

I wish that type of thing would happen, where there were "minimum criteria" to be considered for an at large bid, but I can't see how it happens. Both of your suggestions I'm in complete agreement with.

The Illusion of Power grew stronger as the weekend progressed. In addition to Big 10/14 champ Wiscnsin, the conference was awarded 6 at-large bids. How many of those at-large teams managed to escape the weekend? 1

Coach Matta openly acknowledges scheduling cupcakes. Which leads to the question: Just how deserving - or powerful - was OSU? It played 13 non-conference games. Two were against North Carolina (Big 10/ACC Challenge) and Louisville. OSU lost both. Their other 11 non-conference games? All were at home against UMass-Lowell, Marquette, Sacred Heart, Campbell, James Madison, Colgate, High Point, Morehead State, North Carolina A&T, Miami OH, Wright State. So, how powerful was OSU?

And just how powerful would it look if to qualify for an at-large bid, it had to go on the road for at least 3 or 4 non-conference games. It might actually make reaching 20 wins something of a challenge.

But why should OSU and other power-conference schools risk more road games? Heck, just finish at or about .500 in conference play, schedule a gaggle of home cupcake games, get to 20 wins and the Selection Committee which claims to look not at conference affiliations but only at team performance is likely to award a bid.

One of the things that is overlooked is just getting there, UCLA sucked all year but once there they got favorable match ups and guys now say "well look what they did"....you could have done the same thing with Temple or other mids in the same boat. Unfortunately, many of the deserving mids are never gonna get that chance as a team like UCLA takes their place. What mike is saying about a place at the table is true. Once you are there doing something is easier. getting that chair in the feild of 68 is the key that is oft overlooked.
