As a cleveland native and a true sports fan, Gary Waters may be the best recruiter and coach I've seen in mid major conferences in a while. I know Shaka smart leads the list but you have to give Waters credit. His best player Bryn Forbes is at michigan state playing big minutes this year and they are in the horizon semis. I think Gary Waters would make OU a Gonzaga/Wichita type. He loves our city and gets the best athletes. I'm in no means saying fire Saul but I just have the biggest respect for Gary and what he has done in Cleveland. Now that cleveland state is getting out of the commuter school and there stons of bars and dorms going up, this is going to be great with Gary. And evidence of his coaching and recruiting prowess is that he was able to beat out NIU, EMU, Oakland, Hofstra and Holy Cross for a 2 star recruit that ended up leaving his program after 2 years? He has only taken Cleveland State to the tournament one time (2009). He really hasn't done anything noteworthy since he left Kent State 15 years ago. What makes him such a good recruiter again? When Butler left the Horizon he said Cleveland State was ready to take over the league. How's that worked out? There's always some reason why they didn't win more whether it's injuries or bad calls or bad luck. Not interested, even if he did become available. Kent went from being a terrible program that had never won a league title to the MAC standard with 15 20+ win seasons since 1999. He did a good job at Rutgers and is the only coach since Tom Young left to have a winning record. At Cleveland State he took over a program that had fallen on hard times and immediately (after one losing season) turned them into a winner. I don't know a thing about him personally but I think he's a good coach. That being said I'm glad we didn't hire him because of his age. I'm guessing he'll retire a Viking and be the standard the coaches up there are measured by (assuming he doesn't have a Kevin Mackey-esque meltdown). And make no mistake-the Kent State team that reached the Elite 8 was Waters' team; those players were recruited by Waters. Stan Heath parlayed those players and play-off run into a job at Arkansas, where he was less than successful. Waters can coach.
