UMass is an amazing spectacle of poor decisions all made because of what happened between 1992-1996. There is no doubt UMass basketball had an amazing run during that 5 year stretch winning 11 tournament games (before some were vacated). But outside of that stretch UMass basketball is overwhelmingly ho-hum. Outside of that 5 year stretch the Minutemen are just 0-4 in NCAA Tournament and have an overall win//loss record that would put then right in the middle of the MAC.

But because of those 5 glorious (and fraudulent) years the decision makers at UMass continue to make bad decisions, like honoring Calipari and like refusing the MAC's invite for all sports to protect its marquee basketball program. They honestly believe that their football team will only be independent for 2 years and then some conference, one much better than the MAC, will come a calling. It would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

What a total joke. Lost all respect I ever had from UMass, which wasn't much to begin with.

I suspect that John Calipari is still cheating at UK, but that he's learned better how to hide it. He probably doesn't need to cheat as much there, as the school name will help him recruit, but as the article says some of these guys have limited desire to "play school" as one student-athlete up the road once put it. [Disclaimer: As I understand it, Cardale Jones is actually a fairly good student despite this remark that was reportedly made in jest.]

Part of the methods they use probably allow them to "hide" it. Kids only have to be academically eligible for Fall semester if they're going to the NBA after one year, right?

In fairness, there are some decent kids and people on that team too, that aren't just "one and done". And Cal does a nice job blending all the talent and egos. I'm not taking away from him as a coach, but the facts show his prior two college coaching stops had some rule breaking involved. That's the rep he has earned.
