Than have to sit through that game again:

No effort
No energy
No D
No breaking of traps
No box outs
No touches for Mo & Tony
No team play
No court sense (no passing to open players)
No show for the 'No Zone'

Poor effort offensively, but I liked our energy on defense, especially late when we put some pressure on. We cut a 24 point game down to 11.

Another home loss and another game where the team didn't show up. Another game where they start slow and never get going. Hard to win when you don't show up the first half. They gave up 15 offensive rebounds. CMU shoots 21% from behind the arc and they still blew us out of our own building.

its as if our team needs a large crowd so much that when its not a large crowd like tonight they can't get themselves up for the game. That's my theory for why we play so poorly in Ypsi too, btw.

It used to be that a pressing defense would pick up Ohio's offense but tonight it would've just given up too many easy buckets. Looked like we were often running a spread out 1-2-2 with nobody guarding lane, and CMU got several uncontested lay-ins. Add in that we weren't taking advantage of CMU's cold spells and it was a friggin train wreck.

This is our team this year. Love it or hate it. Don't get caught in the middle. I have said it in other posts. We will win games we shouldn't and lose games we shouldn't. We will probably beat Western coming up but lose to Miami. But we are also a team that can get hot and be a sub.500 team in the MAC and reach the NCAAs. Bean and Mo are the kind of polarizing figures that were made for the NCAA Tourney. Can you imagine a Louisiana Drawl from Bean while Mo talks about his journey as they prepare to take on Villanova?

No effort, no discipline, no pride. This needed to be on the front of the media guide for this years team.

My observations:

1. OHIO had good defensive intensity most of the night, held them way under their normal 3 point shooting percentage.
2. CMU showed incredible discipline and some of the best ball control I've ever seen.
3. OHIO got a lot of open shots that they worked for but then couldn't finish -- including blown layups, shots that went in and then popped out, etc.
4. Bean played good defense for much of the game, but was off offensively; he can't hit a zillion three point shots in every game ("Live by the Bean die by the Bean")
5. It seemed at times like each member of the team had his worst game of the season all at the same time. (Well, maybe their second worst game . . . hard to get worse the first EMU game.)
6. Yes, it did seem like a root canal.
GO OHIO!

You said this many times in the room. How is this different than what you expected once you had watched 2 or 3 games this year. It ain't a gonna change. Take the rest of the year off and come back next year. You'll feel better and those who have a brighter countenance won't feel quite so beaten over the head by the negative vibes.

I feel as bad as anyone about this year. A huge bust of a year in a program that is ascending. Does not mean I can't find happiness in this community of followers or some bright spot to smile about in Taylor or laster or TC continuing to be consistent at stretching the floor.

Negative vibes Moriarity, always with the negative vibes.

Russ/Rob even remarked during the game that tonite was just a continuation of what we have seen most of this year. The pieces at times just don't seem to fit together. It's the trying to put square pegs in round holes syndrome. Don't think its going to change at this late date. Ryan, Laster, Tony, Khari, etc though are getting lots of playing time which can only help their growth for next year. Better days are ahead.

A 15-0 start and the rest is history...pretty even play from there. That start was atrocious...the turnovers were laughable. And all game long, I couldn't believe how many balls hit the floor that we should've had. It was really frustrating. Some random thoughts:

- My boys are playing basketball which has killed my Saturday attendance. The Bobcats are now 0-3 in MAC play with me in attendance and 3-0 when I'm not. So...sorry.
- Weakest in session conference game crowd that I can remember in a long time. Sparse Ozone and very dispersed crowd. Maybe 3k in the house?
- Saul nails it in the post game after every loss. He knows exactly what the issues were and how they should be fixed. Tonight he mentioned you take the good bean with the bad bean, he just wishes we could recognize when it is not there and adjust.
- So then why don't we do that? Between this fact and his demeanor in game, I can't help but think right now Saul is like the parent with no spine...genuinely trying to instill good behavior in his kids...but when they act up and don't listen, he let's them walk all over him.
- Then again, maybe Saul feels like a brand new step Dad to this inherited roster. Maybe he doesn't feel it is his place or doesn't want to come off too harsh. I don't pretend to know the details of his coaching style, but from the outside looking in I think he could stand to get a little tougher with these kids and hold them accountable.
- For example, how about you tell Bean at half that you don't like how it is working on the perimeter and think our best shot is to feed MO & Tony tonight. Then when he Jacks up two 3s on the same possession both with 30+ on the shot clock, take him out and ask him if you stuttered at half time.
- While I'm on a negative kick, should we talk about Ryan Taylor's regression this season? I feel like pointing out subpar performance from the young guys is taboo because it kills our hope. But why did he look so much better early on? His outside shooting has not been good, and like everyone else he is not distributing the ball well. I still like him but he needs to shoulder some blame.
- As for the other freshman (Laster)...I don't recall a player that does so little (good or bad) in so many minutes. He is just kind of there. He plays good D and seems like a decent player but let's go ahead and move a bit more on offense, try to get open and then actually take the shot.
- I liked Stevie's approach tonight. More dribble drives, good ball handling, smart 3s. I'm ready for him to start at point and play 30+ again. Why the hell not? Bean should not bring the ball up the court...his game should be like Nick was.

Just the uninformed opinions of a frustrated fan.

This can probably be attributed to just being freshmen. I didn't expect either of them to be All-MAC in their first season in the league, but we were kind of teased and spoiled with how well they played early in the year. I think the grind of college could just be wearing on both of them. When they are seniors, I kind of expect Ryan to be more like a Mychal Green-type player and Mike to be a Whitney Davis-type player, if that makes any sense.

We were exposed tonight (if we hadn't been already).. Be prepared to see teams trap us whole court for the rest of the season. We crapped down our legs.

Normally when we lose, I avoid this board due to depression.

Last night's loss was so bad that when I woke up I forgot it even happened. I was emotionally checked out during the course of the game yesterday.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Sometimes, we want/hope progress and development to be a linear progression. In reality, there are stops, starts, and short-term regressions. It's common for players and teams to fall back into bad habits after a little success. I am interested to see how we come out this weekend. If we play with the improved ball movement and defensive commitment we saw in the game prior to last night, I'll write off this game as a temporary lapse.

I've referred to this season as the "Win or Lose, we still booze" sort of year, somewhat like the really lean years for football. Given what I know is coming to to the roster beginning next year, it's pretty hard to get too down on the situation. They are what they are. Enjoy the good ones, and don't get too down when they're bad, because this season is going to be the outlier for this program.

I really didn't think we played that great of defense besides Mo. CMU just missed many wide open shots and shots close to the rim. You can call it good defense, but I would say it was sub par.

Not to rag on either Ryan or Laster but don't lose sight of the fact that both were essentially undrafted free agents by the time Saul got the job. In an ideal world I would think Saul would have preferred one if not both of them would have been red-shirted this year. I do believe both will be solid contributors in the years ahead.

Have been saying for weeks I think Stevie needs to be back starting. It could not have possibly been worse than that start to last nites game. It just appears to this untrained eye that the flow is better when Stevie is in the game. He also appears to have some confidence back, not a bad time to hand him the ball.

Maybe the problem is who do you sit? Take Laster out, you gain a ball handler and lose a better defender. Take Bean out and you take out one of our top two scorers. I agree, Stevie has earned more PT with his play lately, but who do you sit? My knee jerk answer would be Laster, but that makes us really small on the perimeter with suspect defenders at both PG and SG.
