I've made that comparison in my mind a few times. Still too early, because this team hasn't yet caught fire enough to make a .500ish conference record seem possible.

One comparison worth noting is that when Bean gets hot, he reminds me a lot of Bassett, who had that amazing stretch run that year. But I don't think the supporting cast this year is as talented. Bean is essentially our only "reliable" 3-point shooter. The '09-10 team had Bassett, Cooper and Freeman also posing a serious threat.

Our current guys really struggle to score some nights.

Looking at stats the only comparison on players I could make:

Bean and AB
Harley and Sayles
Soup and DeVo
Setty and Keely
Laster and Baltic? Maybe?

This years team doesn't have a 3 point threat like Freeman. A wizard of a PG like Cooper. A leader like KVK. But this team does have a beast of a forward in NDour and a star in the making in R. Taylor (He going to be special in 3 years)

Right now we have two guys who can get hot and takeover a game. NDOUR and Bean. If they both get hot at the same time during a consecutive spree of games.... Look out. If only one gets hot however we need others to step up which I think as the season goes on and everyone gets more comfortable with the system it will. Another thing that helps is that there is no clear favorite in the MAC. We can beat anyone on any given night.

I keep saying it over and over, no one will want to play us in the MAC Tournament. The regular season only matters in terms of seeding. Once you get to the tournament, anyone can win it and we have a very good track record.

The comparisons between players are a stretch, to say the least, but this is a fun thread.

I just wonder if this delirious level of optimism will be around in the likely event that EMU's zone completely exposes us again tomorrow. I guess time will tell.

An enormous stretch. To compare Stevie to DJ and Bean to Armon is frankly an insult to how good those two were for that 2 1/2 month stretch that season. Armon could beat ANYONE off the dribble one on one. And he knew how to get to the foul line - A LOT. And he could shoot like Bean can now. We all know about what DJ was - the best PG to come through this program at least in my memory. Despite his speed and infectious enthusiasm, Stevie is not DJ. This would also require shot selection of both for every game to be like it was against Akron. And it would require these guys to get into the paint to create foul trouble for other teams. And that doesn't even count the lack of a Tommy Freeman like 3-point sniper that this year's team does not have.

The X-Factors in this conversation are Campbell and Mo, and perhaps Ryan Taylor. Campbell and Mo have the capability to offer more than KVK and Devo did on the floor in terms of scoring and rebounding. But it would take a lot of "ifs" to go right for that to happen IMO. For starters, IF they both stayed out of foul trouble (because guards and wings didn't give up the lane) every game for 4 games in 6 days, we'd have a chance. Look at the track record to know how likely that is. On the plus side, Mo can truly take over in the paint, and can get to the line. Down the stretch, it'll take 20 and 10 production from him to get to the "remember where we were in 2009-10" sort of territory. I'd love to see it from him, because it's exciting to watch when he gets on a roll!

I'm not saying they can't do it this year. I'm saying the two guards that powered OUr team in 09-10 were a notch or two above this year from what I've seen thus far in 14-15....AND I'm saying that 2009-10 team probably under-achieved up until they went nuts starting around mid February of 2010. Maybe this team has too. That part remains to be seen, and it's why we'll watch the games.

The real question, it seems to me, is: can these senior guards/this team become much more consistent in their play. It really is hard to remember when we had guys that could look so good then look so bad for ENTIRE GAMES. I don't ever remember an AB or Kellog or DJ ever being quite this jekyl and hide.

Ya gotta remember early in the year even Saul saw something when he said the parts were there to be a good team and there is a good team in there somewhere. The players either didn't/don't believe it or just haven't played as well as they are capable. I think their problems since the MAC started aren't talent but something else...maybe they will get to 10 wins and surprise everyone yet!

Ya Gotta Believe!

I think last year in post-season, Campbell showed some ability to take over when he wanted to. How can we get him there this season?

I would want to play us in the tourney. I wouldn't want to play us if I didn't feel like playing defense.

One reason not to bother with this comparison (in terms of our hope this season will end in another MAC championship): the nonsensical bracket the MAC now uses.

If we don't get a top-four seed -- and we won't -- then we won't win the tournament. No one wins five games in six days in this format. Four games with a few-days breather between the first two rounds, which is what we had in 2010, was nearly impossible. This format really IS impossible for those outliers.

Like last year, we may all be kicking ourselves if this team improves but still lands about a 5 or 6 seed in this draw.

I really wish they'd only give the top two the big byes.
