Anybody see the technical foul called on Illinois' Jaylon Tate with 33 seconds to go holding a 2 point lead? IMO it was a perfect box out. He just happened to catch Trice with his butt right in the boys. Reminded me of Verne Lundquist throwing a fit when Asown Sayles did the same thing to Chris Wright of Georgetown in 2010.

I agree. the announcers were out of control about how they thought is was a foul. I thought there was a little acting thrown in there, too. I totally forgot about Sales doing that vs GT. I was in Providence so I don't recall Lundquist's comments (shameless Bobcat-brag - sorry!).

Here's a link to an article with Terry Wymers explanation. I Personally didn't like the call, especially since nothing was called on the floor.

We got the same call in real time in 09 or 10. I wish I could remember what game but I am sure it was Wymer on the crew that made the call. Ref called it and Groce went bonkers as they awarded extra FTs. (outside of Sayles faux pas)

Big difference here was that they called it on the line. THis case we got the refs making up a rule as they went to the monitor (which Dakich usually abhors) and making up the T on the spot. Crazy.

I was watching it and thought they hand their hands tied by the rulebook but Wymer showed us......

I don't believe in karma, but if you think that call was criminal, it all came around when MSU went 2-4 at the line to close and got a worthless shot after being awarded possession down 1 after the "technical." The game was being handed to them like a Chicago election, and they just said, "No thank you."

I agree intrepid.

amazing to see an msu team that folds in the clutch.

Don't have many ponies in the stable up there.

Dakich timeline shows on twitter that he caught up to Wymer yesterday after the IU/Mich game

I like the State jersies and the big green S flags and apparel. Wish the A&M folk would follow your lead and take as much offense as you guys do at being called "michigan"

I thought the same thing Tom. The article I linked above had Wymers official statement. He said the contact occurred after the ball was dead, hence the dead ball tech. I didn't think that would be the case since it was a 1 and 1.

Best explanation I have seen yet ( and I have seen a ton including Dakich talking directly to Wymer)

Quote:
The conjecture about this technical has gotten out of hand. The refs calling it a dead ball foul is just wrong. The ball was definitely in play. Those that are interpreting the rules to say that because they chose to review it, they have to call something are also wrong. Quotes from that article about rule changes are being taken out of context. In context, it reads:

"When it comes to an elbow above the shoulders, referees will be allowed to use a video monitor to determine the severity of the blow. If deemed inadvertent, the referee could call a player-control foul or even nothing.

Previously, a referee was required to call a flagrant-1 or flagrant-2. A flagrant-1 results in two free throws and possession for the offended team. A flagrant-2 adds an ejection for the offending player."

The part I put in bold above is key. They could have called nothing. Never mind that this whole paragraph is about above the shoulder contact, I believe that it would apply to any foul being reviewed. We see it all the time where a foul is reviewed for being excessive and it is ruled not to be so. I believe the refs could have called it a flagrant foul only if they had called the foul initially. Because they wanted to call something, they came up with the dead ball technical which should not have been applicable.

As for Dakich, I believe that he and the other announcer initially said during the game that they believed a no-call to be the correct course of action. Only when the technical was given along with the subsequent explanation did he change his tune.

The whole situation was bizarre. Tate could have been called for a regular contact foul by the refs if they had seen it. It was their prerogative to review what happened. Given what actually did happen, the only correct course of action would have been a no-call.

The key is that they should have seen it. That is how we got called on it a couple of years back. It is not correct use of the monitors to go back and make up a situational ruling.

You have a voice . Vote your mind
