This is a question for those with a higher basketball IQ than I have -- probably 90 percent of the board: why don't we play more man defense? We seem to always be in some kind of sagging zone or match-up zone. This makes it relatively easy for opponents to whip the ball around the perimeter or do a dribble penetration kickout and get a man free for a wide-open three attempt. In a man defense we'd have someone on the shooter on a more consistent basis, baring an effective pick. We might give up more short shots with a man defense, but they only count for two points. If half of CMU's threes had been twos yesterday the outcome of the game would probably have been different. Please tell me why I'm wrong about this. Thanks.

Wait, weren't we complaining we never played zone?

I thought that we played virtually all man to man defense.

If that was a man defense against CMU, it was the worst man defense I've ever seen. I thought it looked like some kind of match-up zone, which has some man-to-man principles but is basically a zone defense. Please enlighten me.

CMU ranks 12th nationally among D-1 teams in terms of offensive efficiency. They're 6th in points/game and 19th in field goal percentage. Our man defense and rebounding gave us a chance to win yesterday.

Coach Phillips' post game comments on what turned this game were spot on in my opinion.

second that.

I remember several games folks were complaining because we do not zone enough. IIRC I answered someone during one of those rants with an explanation of how the guards who do not play adequate m2m would be even more exposed in a zone and put our bigs in precarious positions with foul troubles. I don't see us playing an inordinate or disparate amount of zone compared to M2M
