This team has 3 losses - all close, all on the road, and all v. top 25 teams. They play a physical game with suffocating defense. Guards Carry and Jacobs lead the defense, each having games this year with around 10 steals individually.

Surprised by Toledo’s start tbh. Figured most couldn’t match its firepower — also wasn’t sure Kent would have enough with just Carry and Jacobs offensively. Friday is going to be very tough.

reserve big man Gillespie is 21 of 23 for 91% from the floor (better than Trent h.s. numbers) in limited time.

Addendum: watching some Bama and Sears tonight and catch Sears driving and dishing to teammate Nick Pringle for the bucket. Announcer shares that Pringle came into the game having made 17 of 18 FGA. He has made both of his attempts tonight to increase his shooting to 95%.

When was the last time Kent wasn't loaded?

This last decade. Kent has always been solid, but 1 MAC title (10-8 conference record that year) since Senderoff took over hardly warrants being referred to as loaded.

I would consider Kent ... like Ohio, Buffalo, Akron, Toledo ... to be 'solid' in any given year, not loaded.

Frankly, most seasons, MAC talent is pretty equal, at least in the top half. The difference is the level of coaching. Teams listed above have generally had the best coaches who can get the best out of their talent at hand.

That's why there has never really been a dominant program in the league. Yes, Ohio, Kent, Buffalo, Akron have had a recruiting class here or there that was top shelf, but nothing sustainable for more than a few years.

Difference is, when those teams fall, they don't tumble to the bottom. They are mid-pack at best and always fighting for a top 4 seed in the MAC Tournament,

That's what keeps the MAC such a competitive league, in my opinion.

Kent has by far the toughest defense we'll face all year unless we're making an NCAA run. Based on Adjusted D they're #13 in the country (we're #204).

Malique Jacobs has to be front runner for MAC DPoY.

Will take a gargantuan effort to match them on the defensive end to not lose this one by double digits IMO.

Torvik thinks we lose by 5 71-66.

Keys are:

Deflections
Shooting % (2's and 3's)
TO's Margin

Then also home court advantage and if the Convo crowd gets into it enough and when matters (AKA Not getting loud w/chants when we got a guy on the FT line)

I am looking to see Miles on Carry...likely The Key

The 5th starter, Hornbeak, doesn't get as many minutes but adds 6 and 6 on 77% shooting from the floor (Gary Trent h.s. numbers). A couple of Columbus boys, Sullinger and Davis, add 7 pts apiece off the bench. I find this hard to believe, but reserve big man Gillespie is 21 of 23 for 91% from the floor (better than Trent h.s. numbers) in limited time. A lineup so deep that last year starter Odusipe (SEC transfer) rarely sees the floor this year.

This is a complete team that can do some damage in March.

Boals needs to start looking at some potential bigs...portal or JUCO.

I agree with this. I liked Towns but even he wasn't the answer. Instead of bringing in two guards in Hunter AND Baker, I would have liked an Ali Ali type of player. AJ Clayton isn't that guy. Ben Nicol won't be that guy. In the past we've had that guy but with no talent (See: Ellis Dozier and Wadley Mompremier). We've got the guards and Dwight is a man inside but we don't have a perimeter guy with length. The Cleveland Cavs are dealing with the same thing. Awesome bigs, great guards and no 3 and D guy on the wing.

The challenge is 3 and D wings are the most sought after players in hoops. It’s like comparable to an edge rusher in football. So I do agree, but every program has the same thoughts.

Been clamoring for length at the wing and a 3&D guy for 2 years now. I wished Sam Towns might grow into that role because he had the length but it's not been his real strength. BRod has decent length for the MAC and had the 3 part but never got the D part.

The thing is we have a guy with length and he fits the "D". In fact he's the best defender on our team. And it's Olumide Adelodun. Problem is, not only is there no "3", his offense is so woefully bad it negates his defense and rebounding. Like worst offensive player in the entire MAC bad.

Can Boals et al coach him up in next 2 years or do we have to bring someone else in? Hopefully both.

21% from the field and 12.5% from three?

I looked at some MAC offensive stats on ESPN's site and couldn't find him in the top 100. Nothing against the kid, but he's not exactly lighting it up.

Worst in league? That's what I'm questioning. And based on sample size I don't give much credence to these stats.

Will be in attendance for this game. Hope we can put forward a huge effort and get the win! Just hope it isn't like the game last year at the MACC....

sincere carry mighgt be a legitmate NBA prospect. if this gillispee guy really has that level of shooting ability i gotta wonder why kent doesnt start him and give way more playing time. then kent could practically be unstoppable in the mac for sure. this could be another elite 8 season for kent state.glad we,re playin them in convo instead of their place.

Somebody who shall remain nameless MIGHT have put together an entire thread on BA diving into statistical analysis of our players and ranking them against the MAC.

I'd suggest a click.

Stats are normalized for pace of play, number of possessions and minutes played for this very reason.

Again suggest a click.

Should be noted that Jim Christian returns to the Convo in this one.....someone please count the number of shoulder shrugs where he wonders how much more he can be out-coached as the opponent goes on a run.

Athens is a dreadful place. Ask any Kent fan where their Flashes have struggled forever.
