Assists through four games: Bean - 8 Stevie - 9 17 combined through Four games for Two Senior starting guards - this is Not Good. R Taylor has 10 - OK that's a good frosh start! Ndour has 9. More or same as the starting guards. I think he has been "giving" because he is not "getting"..... Lawrence Alexander 6-3 PG - 86/2.6 Kory Brown 6-4 G - 55/1.7 Marshall Bjorklund 6-8 F - 45/1.4 Tray Vonn Wright 6-7 F - 20/0.6 It will be interesting to see how our offense progresses over the course of this season. A player gets an assist only if the other player hits the shot. We're only hitting 27% from 3, so I imagine that has something to do with it. We will get by. We will get by. We will get by. I would rather like to see where Ohio is as a team in total assists and if the assists/turnover ratio for the team is good, I'm ok. That goes to a basic tenet of how your offense runs. If the PG has assists the offense is getting the ball where it needs to be when it needs to be there. I was listening to a telecast the other day where the talking heads were talking about assists. They were gaga over a guy who had 46 assists and 1 TO. I understand the lament regarding team assists but the addage of an old coach is never lost that when "the point guard runs the show you quite often win, when the PG IS the show a loss often ensues" It's really hard for guards to win without getting the rest of the team involved. We got bigs. Feed em. They re awful hungry. That said, they are both within .1 of their last season APG stats. Perhaps neither have been distributors like we've had with J Fears or DJ. Perhaps Simmons and R Taylor will prove to be able to distribute better. If that's what Saul's offense is supposed to be, a PG running the show and directing offense, then yes those stats do matter. After all that is the basic premise of a PG. However, if the top 6-8 players are all averaging 2, 3 or more assists per game, I'm not going to be too upset. Obviously, Stevie can't go 40 a night but I would rather have RT move over to PG when Stevie is out and leave Bean as an off-guard. Forget Bean looking for assists, I would rather have him shooting. He is an elite shooter. I've seen crazier things happen. He is an elite shooter. 100% agree with this. RT seems like the only player right now that is thinking about the next pass before he receives the ball. Have Stevie or Bean get the ball up the court and then run the offense through RT in much the same way that the offense ran through Jeff Boals in 1994-95. He said a lot of good passes aren't counted as assists. He is mainly concerned with what he sees re: passing the ball well. Everyone on the team, not just the PG. To that end, he also mentioned Stevie specifically, saying Stevie was frustrated with not producing more assists. Saul said he pointed out to Stevie his passing put teammates on the line for EIGHT free throws in one of the recent games. Not a bad thing, and something that doesn't show up in the box score.
