I can't see this being permanent.  70% of the teams and fanbase would have to fly in for it.

With their desire to expand east, I could see this becoming part of the rotation along with Chicago and Indy.

Absolutely. Not sure how it is going to affect attendance though. Most of those fans prefer Indy to Chicago for the ease of hotels, interstates and central gathering places for each team. Chicago at the United Center is pretty cool but there are limited venues for meet and greets and you really need to take a cab or similar as parking is not much fun price wise or neighborhood. Lots better than 20 years back though.

I would think that a change of venue every once in a while would be a good thing and the Verizon Center is easily accessible (Metro stop directly underneath) with tons of wining, dining and hotel options.

It's funny because a couple of the local talking heads this morning were talking about how much better Chicago was than Indy.  My immediate thought was - isn't the United Center in a less than desirable part of Chi-town?  While I know the Fieldhouse is surrounded by places to stay and places to eat.

I totally agree. THe major problem is the footprint of the original Big Ten. In Chicago or Indy the bulk of the BIG fans can get to games fairly easily. Moving out to DC makes it a several day trip. That can be very good or very bad. I would like it i think if I was a BIG fan as I could see DC ....but then you already know that from our past. (stillcan't thank you enough for the ride ) . Remains to be seen how they as a fanbase attend the event. Time will tell. 

I agree with you COuntry ....I love Chicago and have an in at the ticket office in the United center and a ton of friends to stay with but there are threads on several BIG boards regarding the experience in INdy and the problems with geting together out on West Madison street.

Yes and no. Could you walk to United Center from the main part of town? Maybe, but I wouldn't recommend it. It is easy to hop a shuttle bus there (yes, I brought up the shuttle bus) or grab a short taxi ride.

Chicago is a good location because so many B1G transplants are here. There's at least one bar dedicated to every B1G school. Easy travel to Chicago. Lots to do. Indy is also a great venue and I've heard nothing but good things about Indy.

DC? I don't know enough about the venue to comment, but I would assume there's a decent amount of B1G alums there.

You would be surprised by the amount of Big Ten alumni that live in the New York/Philly/Baltimore/Washington DC corridor. Those are the fans they are targeting to go to their games. It also helps only needing 15-20k fans.

I would not be surprised if they also find a way to get the tournament into New York on a rotational basis along with Indy & Chicago.

I would say their branding and footprint has become so bizarre that it will come back to bite them in a loss of identity, but they have so many alums and so much money that I'm pretty sure it won't.

The conference produces a middling, boring, stodgy football product but it's still the great behemouth it is from sheer inertia. And it's a wonderful basketball conference, a sport which 60 percent of the schools' fans barely watch.

I find this interesting to debate with OS-Who fans.  They say they're Ohio State Fans, but the reality is that they're only Ohio State Football fans -- until the NCAA Tournament that is.  Then they come out of the woodwork.  That's a shame, because watching B1G hoops is usually as good as it gets during the season.

They are top 10 nationally in both attendance and gross revenue.  They do this while typically having a less than stellar OOC slate.  The bball fanbase is very strong.  They're getting ready to start a 3 year round robin with UCLA, UNC and UK.  To be included in that lineup is pretty damn impressive.  OSU bball is not Kentucky, but considering they are a football first school, they do a phenomenal job.

Oz, then I believe the issue is perception.  I personally perceive that the O$U Bandwagon primarily exists during football season.  The other perception I have could simply have to do with the size of the Schott.  I was at OSU vs Illinois, and the section of the upper deck behind the basket I could see was 90% empty.  To me, that's a damn shame, because that basketball program is obviously very good.


Related to that schedule with UNC, UCLA, UK:  I'm shocked that Kansas isn't the fourth team.  Or even Michigan State.  Despite my feelings about him in the Tressel departure, Gene Smith earns his paycheck arranging things like this event.

MSU and KU were both a part of the same event the last 3 years, along with Duke and UK.  (I believe Calipari was actually the mastermind behind the series, but don't quote me on that.)

I was at the same Illinois game, and will blame that crowd on the subzero windchill that evening.  I remember walking in and considering turning around and heading home.  Extremely cold.

Ohio State basketball is a big deal in Columbus. It is a big deal for alums. It is non-existent until the Big Ten tournament to the non-alum fan of Ohio State everywhere else in the state. And that's a good chunk, if not narrow majority of the Ohio State fanbase.

Clarification and Rumination: That's not being negative. It's brilliance.  They've convinced  one of the most populous states in the U.S. — one with a crapload of other DI universities, no less — that it is the only public university of importance in Ohio. And they did it through football and the word 'Thee (sic)' (The King James Version Strategy) and the sheer force of a tireless Machiavellian disguised by bow tie, Coke-bottle glasses and nerdish gentility.

While that is indeed true,  I doubt the same occurs in East Lansing, or Bloomington.  I'm  glad they're a part  of that event - gives me something entertaining to watch and talk about locally.

I totally agree with this. As one of those non-alum Ohio State football fans, I am less so their basketball fan. While I was an Ohio State basketball fan before I went to college. Since I went to another University I switched my allegiance. That is probably the same for other Ohio residents. So people that went to Kent, Ohio, Toledo, Cincinnati, etc switched their basketball fandom to their alma mater.

It isn't so easy in football. While all those colleges have football programs, they way college football is setup, they compete at a different level (ie Ohio State competes for national titles, wheras all the other teams in Ohio really have no realistic chance)

While I root for Ohio in football, and have and will root for Ohio to beat Ohio State in football, very rarely do they actually compete for the same prize. So I feel less conflicted in rooting for both in football.
