I have no problem with this for now.  Give the new coach a chance to talk to the kid.  If it obviously is not going to work at that point, I say it is a waste of time/effort to not release him.

I understand that we want the new coach to have a chance speak to him before we just release him, but not sure what a hard line stance gets us in this situation. He still doesn't have to come here and can just sit out a year, correct? If there was no coaching change then MAYBE I don't release him, but this would be setting a precedent and could be held against us by other coaches and future recruits.

I don't think this is any different than Caris LeVert's situation. Let the new coach meet with any of the recruits before any decisions get made. Hopefully T.O. realizes he may actually be better off now than with the prior regime.

Yeah, I think someone is being a little over dramatic here.

They will have Saul meet with Owens, and if after that he still wants released his wish will be granted. Let's hope Saul can close the deal!

I saw this on College Basetball Talk.  Hoping SP can convince him to stay. If not, I hope we release him and move on.

Edit: Also of note, I went back and read the Baltimore Sun article about Tariq Owens.  In there he said the recruiting relationship was built with Coach Stewart.

It's Schaus, not Phillips doing this.

If after talking to Phillips he still doesn't want to come to Ohio, there's nothing to gain by hanging on to him.  He's probably not going to the MAC; the story mentioned Seton Hall, VCU, MiamiF, USF and FGC as schools interested in him (and of course BC).

So coaches can leave at their leisure but players can't.  No wonder the folks at NW want to unionize.  Kind of reminds you of colonial times and indentured servitude.  I guess we can hold him to his letter of intent and continue the charade that kids sign with a school as opposed to a coach.

Now if there were a buyout clause in the LOI.....

Dude are you dim? This is not on Coach Saul this is Jim Schaus. I assume they want a chance to meet with Tariq and his father...I think this could have been accomplished without the news of a "non release" because Ohio will take some cake to the face but this is a CRUCIAL time where hopefully a full court press we can save Ndour or/and Owens..now that would be great. I'm not sure why Schaus would let this news get out prior to any sit down with Owens that is a fumble after such a great run with the hiring of Phillips. No one likes a mid-major that keeps a kid from moving up its not like he is going to Akron or Fiami.

This seems to all be coming from Tariq's AAU coach. My guess is he will be given his release after Phillips gets a chance to talk to him. Really a non-issue at this point imo.

Even more disgusting.  New coach hiding behind A.D.....  Uhg.....

Ya'll know from my posts over time my complete utter disgust for a system where this is allowed to happen.  Old white guys making millions holding young kids hostage.  Disgusting.

I've heard there is no merit to the Ndour rumor, so people can relax on that one

Pretty normal.  Nothing disgusting about it.  I bet he will be released if he still wants it after speaking with Phillips.

I agree that the system needs to be fixed, but I do not think this is an example of any of the problems, at least not just yet.  I see absolutely nothing wrong with not releasing the kid until the new coach gets to speak with him.  He obviously liked the school at least a little bit if he verbaled and then signed.  His request had to do with the coach he committed to leaving.  Who is to say that he won't like Phillips just as much or more?

I imagine that Phillips will speak with Owens within the next few days.  If he is released (which I think he will be if he wants it), it really will have no impact at all, especially when a lot of schools will still have scholarships available once all the undergrads declare for the draft.

I don't see anything to gain by trying to get him to stay.  If he wants to leave, then they should just left him go and don't let the door hit him on the way out.  We need players who are bought in and actually want to be here.  Now that it is known throughout the universe that he wants out of his LOI, what impact has that had on the current players' relationship/potential relationship with him? Even if Phillips does convince him to stay.  The damage has already been done. We don't need someone coming in and disrupting the locker room who has already once been quoted saying he doesn't want to come here.

Also, how is there no upside to a 4* big man with a 7+ foot wingspan being on campus?  If he buys into the new coaching staff/philosophy, it can turn out just like any other recruitment.  A similar thing happened when Gary Williams left UMD.  Nick Faust was 1 of 3 commitments that year.  After Turgeon took over, all three asked for their releases.  Turgeon was able to sit down with all three and convinced Faust to stay.  The other two left for other schools, but no one has since questioned Faust's commitment to the program.

Actually, Alan, it's the reverse. In the end the kid will get out of his "binding" letter of intent, if he wants out, yet the "binding" letter is binding on the school. They can't say "oh, nvm, we decided not to give you a scholarship after all, but to give it to someone else instead". Thus the school is bound, but in practicality, the kid is not.

I agree this is standard procedure. Reactions are based on semantics.

Which sounds best:

1) Ohio won't release Owens from his LOI.
2) Ohio won't release Owens from his LOI until he speaks with Coach Phillips.
3) Ohio wants the opportunity for Coach Phillips to speak with Owens before granting a LOI release.

Let's face it, regardless of when given, this release is a dog and pony show. Chances are Owens has had substantial contact with, oh, let's call them "search consultants".

Crap journalism.

It is not unreasonable at all for Ohio to not immediately grant an LOI release at moment's notice. Ohio hasn't even had a press conference announcing new coach yet. Patience is a virtue. Waiting a week does no damage to Tariq Owens whatsoever.

This is a non-story.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Not only that but this all happened before we even begun searching for a new coach.

I think you are completely overacting. Also a little concerned with what you are implying. I agree with Ohio not releasing him until he has met the new coach. If I were OU I would let Owens know how impressed Ohio University is with him as a person and an athlete and that we would still very much like for him to attend Ohio University. If he still wants to be released after meeting him then so be it he should be allowed to leave.

I am very bothered by the notion that recruits are automatically exploited by universities once they agree to play at the university. I would trade how I paid for my Ohio University education with an athlete. I worked road construction 65-75 hours a week for 6 months each year to pay for 2 quarters each year. Took me 6 years of 6 months of school and 6 months of work but I made it through. How cool would it have been to play basketball or baseball (sports I loved) and receive a degree from a great university.
