1.  Don NOT under any circumstances hire a coach who's previous job was head coach at a power conference school.  No matter what he tells you, no matter the oral promises, he will leave at the first opportunity presented him by another power conference school.

2. While I understand that the Ohio University basketball head coaching position is not a "destination" job, the contract for our next head coach should be written in such a way that it is extremely disadvantageous for him to consider leaving before completion of his 4th year in Athens.

3.  The contract should stipulate in ironclad language that should the coach depart for another head coaching job at a Division ! school, that school will be required to play a game in Athens within 3 years of the date of departure.  This may be waived by Ohio University, or the departing coach may buy this clause out for $1 million within 60 days of his leaving..

4. Should the coach depart for another job, the contract should stipulate that within 3 days of his resignation, he must A) physcially meet with the team to explain his decision and B) must appear at a news conference to take questions about his decision to leave.  The departing coach may buy this clause out for $1 million.

Solich gets a pass because of age.  He turned 60 when he took this job, and he wasn't gonna get a BCS h.c. position if he went undefeated in 3 straight seasons...

I think #3 and #4a are the most sensible. I think #1 and #2 really reduce your likelihood of signing someone you might really want. These two items come with the territory of coaching in the MAC.

So I'm guessing we can't hire highly thought of assistants on the heels of Groce leaving?   If you want to retain a coach you have to up the ante and while we've done that somewhat we'll never do it to the point that a good coach will think of this as his dream job.  Not with football eating up a good chunk of the pie (speaking of Solich).

And I'm sure someone who hasn't been a head coach at a power conference school previously would NEVER show interest in such a job should the opportunity present itself.

You can't just put these clauses into a contract without problems.

-  Coaches would want a much bigger salary, and a much bigger buyout on their end.  What if they suck?  Then we are screwed.
-  Coaches simply would pick another school that may be less facist.
- If we could do this.....don't you think we would have?

Buyouts are un-American and reek of desperation.  You want someone to stay?  Pay them.  If you can't afford them, don't resort to some punitive gimmick.

In theory, we just paid for the FB locker room renovation, for which we have been trying to fund raise since 2006.  $500,000 is not that easy to come by, so I would posit that size of buyout is not chump change.

Guaranteed income is for pinko-commies and reeks of desperation. You want to get paid? Win. If you can't afford to lose, don't resort to some punitive gimmick.

see how contracts work both ways?

Sure you can!  I forget which school it was, but it was a power conference team that had to go play some piddly mid major in Podunk precisely because they were obligated to when the coach at Podunk took his new job.  I'm not smart enough to think of this one myself.

All you need to do is start thinking out side the box.  Nothing new would ever happen with the attitude of "if we could have done this we already would have..."

Not a math major but-

Time on job- 2years
salary- $400K(x2)- $800K
Tax rate- 35%
$800K- 35%= $520K after taxes
$520K after taxes - $500K contract buyout
= $20K net

After taxes and contract buyout looks like JC will net about $20k for 2yrs work. seems like a good contract to me.

I was questionable on JC until I saw Ndour.

Sure I hated JC since he beat our arse at KSU every game I watched.

But when I saw Ndour live I said damn.....if he leaves it would be nice to get a coach who could recruit someone like that.

Things are getting even more scary, Doc. I had EXACTLY that same feeling the first I saw Nature Boy!

The Buyout would be tax deductable, so take it off before you compute the taxes.

Exactly. The buyouts work in both directions. If Ohio wants to fire a coach early, they pay a buyout. If the coach wants to leave early, he pays a buyout. For that matter, if you want to change cell service providers early, you probably pay a buyout. They are not uncommon or un-American at all.

Memo to Schaus: keep doing what you are doing.  You know how to handle this stuff better than we do.

Doesn't the new school usually pay the buyout?  In Geno's case he didn't tell Bradley about the buyout provision and thus became personally liable.  At least that's my understanding.   Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.

It's contract law at work again. The coach signed the agreement, so he is personally liable.  Since he knows he will owe it, as a part of his agreement to work for the new school, he will attempt to get them to agree to pay it on his behalf. It is also true that if the coach doesn't pay it, or can't, the school to whom the buyout is owed could probably sue the school that hired the coach under a tort of interference with a contract, but that's a separate question.

Basketball coach buyout pays for FB locker room renovation would be the just the thing the MAC needs. Robbing basketball for football's sake. :/

They were supposed to come here the year he took the job. Game vanished. So did the time Western Carolina was supposed to come here before LH got that job.
