Unfortunately I was on my way home from Baltimore last evening and missed the game.  I enjoy up and down basketball and the radio (no offense Russ and Rob) just doesn't do it justice.  That said and for those of you who were at the game last night, what were VMI's greatest strengths and weaknesses?  If you were coaching against them now that you've seen them live and in person, how would you beat them?

I'm no basketball savant, but I thought great things happened for us, offensively, when we got the ball into the post/paint.  Unfortunately Tony Campbell was in foul trouble most of the night so his effectiveness was limited by bench time, but he and Maurice could have their way with them down low.  There were stretches where we settled for jump shots and I think that hurt us.  They rebounded well against us but I thought their post defense was soft.  I also thought, defensively, we were much more successful when we sent a double team at Covington and forced the ball out of his hands.  Covington was a beast, in my humble opinion, a more polished version of Treadwell.  When we tried to play him with one defender he ate our lunch.  Not sure why we went away from the doubles.

That said, I think the real thing that cost us this game was depth and legs.  We played very well in the 1st half, very crisp, but I thought we looked tanked halfway through the second half.  With our shortened bench we couldn't maintain their pace.  When we got jumper happy the pace, to me, seemed to quicken and that played into VMI's strengths.  I give credit where it's due, VMI made some big plays.  On 50/50 balls they killed us, and when they got a second chance off a 50/50 ball or offensive board, they made us pay every time.

I'm even less of a savant than 100% Cat, but I agree with his assessment. My fears heading into this game about the tempo and being able to stay with them physically throughout the entire game really came into play at the end. Combine that with some lights-out shooting and it was really tough to overcome. They will win this thing.

My assessment is similar to all the others.  I think there were way more positives than negatives in last nights game (and in the whole season).  The lapses or whatever you want to call them that happened during the year are puzzling and frustrating as they were last night BUT the upside of things far outweigh those lapses.

This was the most SHOULDA, COULDA, WOULDA season I can remember for a long time and last night was not different.

Some will say poor defense is what lost the game.  I would say that shooting 68% has less to do with poor offense than it does just making shots. When you run an offense like VMI there will be lots of open looks.  It won't be that often that they hit 68%.  There were a few glaring defensive gaffs but if they were shooting a regular percentage they would not have stuck out so much.  Like has been mentioned many times before, you cannot assume that if just incident was different that everything else would have remained exactly the same. Who knows what might have been if only.....
That being said, and before someone else brings it up, allowing the pass down court late in the game did seal our fate.

In my opinion much was gained from this tourney and the expense of being in the tourney was justified.

pretty good analysis there.

They are spot on ALan. The double team was doing well then we went kind of one on one from the 7 min mark in the 1st and started chucking up shots early in the shot clock with no rebounding. TC and the bigs got a series of fouls in succession and that is when the wheels started coming off. Helped in the early going that VMI was missing a lot of shots which they did not in the 2nd

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Winter comes and asks how you spent your summer.....

The game loves and rewards those who love and reward the game

I think this is pretty accurate except I'd say we hit the wall with about 5 minutes left in the first half.   We just couldn't get a stop.  To their credit VMI hit a lot of tough shots.  Their entire team seems adept at hitting 10 foot runners. But I can see why our VMI friend said that the Big South has gotten used to it and can counter it while outside teams struggle.  I couldn't help but think of George Foreman punching himself out against Muhammad Ali in 1974.
