The following is taken from The Dagger: College Basketball Blog

Maybe this should be in the Groce thread...

"Take a look back at how Caris LeVert landed at Michigan, and it's remarkable the number of dominoes that needed to fall to make it happen.

Had Ohio University not upset Michigan and South Florida to reach the 2012 Sweet 16, Illinois probably never offers its head coaching job to former Bobcats coach John Groce that spring. Had Groce not jumped at the opportunity to coach a Big Ten school, LeVert wouldn't have backed out of the letter of intent he signed with Ohio. And had LeVert not decided to reopen his recruitment, he'd probably be tearing up the MAC instead of starring for the Wolverines as a sophomore.

Ohio's loss is Michigan's gain because LeVert's breakout sophomore season is one of the main reasons the Wolverines are in position to capture the Big Ten title."

So by Ohio beating Michigan, Michigan benefited by getting Levert instead of Ohio getting him.

Grumble.  Not that I am complaining about having Jim Christian, and not that I am complaining about our 14-2 MAC season last year...But can you imagine no turnover in the coaching staff OR roster from the Sweet 16 team, plus adding LeVert and Wilkins to the mix?  Grumble.

I don't know all the ins and outs of the Levert situation but if we hadn't beaten Mich, Burk probably would've jumped to the NBA a year earlier, so Mich would've had an open schollie and who knows what would've happened.  We might've had no Sweet 16 and no LeVert.

He was signed to an LOI. He was coming to Athens.

Thanks.  As Emily Latelle used to say: "Oh.  Never mind."

Given the choice.....
I would take Sweet 16 appearance over LaVert.

Hmm. I'd say so, but the unknown of wondering what we'd have done with him is interesting. What if?

Then again, what if DJ's shot had gone in at the buzzer against UNC? That would have changed our university forever.

Dakich did a 10 minute dissertation today on Caris talking about him being the most significant player in the BIG this year. Traced his entire recruting and commitment history. Talked about Groce and OHIO and then about Caris "going to work" ...not complaining about the bigger picture. Just getting in the weight room going to work, putting on 27 pounds of muscle and polishing his game.  Congrats to Caris for making the most of what was out there.

I dunno for sure, and despite the attempt of the article to paint JG in a bad light, I have to believe that Coach was above poaching Caris and had some tacit agreement with OHIO at some level not to poach the talent and give the next coach the chance to re recruit him. Dustin was the front man there and had to say something but ultimately Coach pulled the plug and refused to raid the cupboard in light of the LOI

Did Illinois have scholarship available for Levert's freshman year?

Michigan and LeVert got their revenge last night, thrashing Illinois 84-53 to win their first outright Big 10 regular season championship in decades.
