We've alternated wins and losses since the first Toledo game on 2/1. By that logic, we'll take this one and send this outstanding group of seniors out of the Convo on a high note.

Plain and simple, Senior Day is important. Senior Day is the pinnacle of fan engagement. It is the day when for a moment, we, the fans, do not try to do witty things to take an opponent’s focus or scream encouragement for our team to do better. Instead, we say thank you to our players. Thank you for these years, whether it has been a full ride from freshman to senior, or the shorter term we take with a transfer. Thank you for the effort. Thank you for the sacrifice. Thank you for choosing to be part of something that means a lot to all of us gathered here.

It’s a very reflective moment for me, because it’s one of the few arenas in life where a goodbye is scheduled. There a lot of instances where the goodbyes we would like to have never get to happen. Even though this isn’t a permanent goodbye, there is still a change coming and things won’t ever be the same after this is over.

I was in this reflective mood as my senior years at Ohio began to wind down. When Senior Day came that winter, I felt as one with those guys on the floor being appreciated, as if the Convocation Center was saying thank you to me for my years of standing in the bleachers, living and dying with the bounces of a dirty orange ball.

And then the band played Light Up during halftime. I never felt particularly drawn to that particular anthem. I really wasn’t a tremendously active  participant in those sorts of activities. Certainly not when a game was on the line. There needed to be a certain mood, and that mood was certainly not present in the bleachers.

But it wasn’t the tune, or its implied meanings. The song is by Styx. Named for the River Styx; the mythical barrier between the world and the underworld. The journey across the River Styx must be taken by all the departed souls. We, the seniors, were about to cross the River Styx.

That thought did not last long. The second half began and a thrilling game came down to a final possession. The Bobcats prevailed and we marched up Richland Avenue to celebrate with legal beverages. We walked high over the empty river bed, a marsh of tall reeds striping  the center. The River Styx returned to my mind. Dennis DeYoung was telling me – no, demanding – that I need to cross a river. As I left behind the insulated world I knew in college, I would cross the Hocking and encounter the unknown.

A plan took shape at the bar that afternoon. Once the winter snows had melted and the Hocking was no longer a raging torrent, I (and every other soul in the room) would shed our Bobcat coil and cross the river. We would not walk over a bridge like some pansy, but by walking through the water.

All in attendance agreed it would be so. But in early May, when I set the date we would make our crossing, only my friend Roger, a man with an exhibitionist tendency to take his clothes off at socially awkward times, dared join me.

I cursed all those who abandoned us, and Roger and I set off for the banks of the Hocking. We were followed by several curious onlookers. They stood with towels,  on guard for the probable intercession of campus police. Roger was quickly naked. I, being a much more modest sort, wore a concert t-shirt and cut off jeans.

The mud of the river’s bed was soft and cold. I shivered, but the flask I had packed in a back pocket fortified me. Roger had no pockets. As we waded deeper in the water, Roger faltered, muttered an obscenity, and turned around for the warmth of the towels. I would have to make my journey alone.

All of the meaning the crossing held was lost when I reached the other side. All my friends were still on the other side. So I crossed again to the northern bank, declaring that I was not returning because I was afraid of what I found on the other side, but because I needed my shoes back.

I had done it. I had crossed over. And things would never be the same again.

Anyone think Ric dresses for the game (uniform vs street clothes)? I know he does not play, but I think it would be cool to see him out there with the other seniors before the game in uniform.

I thought I saw him in the warm up gear on Wed and walking around...with a limp.?

Great Story FJM.  I Loved the 110 doing that win or lose back in the day!

So, here it is by the 110 for FJM with a Styx rendition following:

Last season, I nearly cried when DJ, Walt, Reg, David & Ivo (yes, even Ivo) took the floor for the last time at the Convo.  They were a special group who did a lot for Ohio and for Ohio basketball.  I won't cry tomorrow, but I'll be very appreciative of five guys who we've seen blossom over the past year or so.  Jon has become a formidable shot blocker who also is a monster cleaning up missed shots.  Nick has gone from a catch-and-shoot 3-pter to someone who's not afraid to take it to the rim.  TJ has shown us tremendous courage over the past few weeks as he tries to put in quality minutes despite debilitating injuries.  Travis is a marvel to watch behind the arc or fighting for rebounds.  And Ric has become the soul of the team from the sideline.  Thank you, all, for being Bobcats.

A win tomorrow will mean a third straight 20-win season and 92 wins over four years.  A nice legacy.

We will get by.

We will get by.
We will survive.

Well said.  You could see TJ was really fighting through the pain in the final minutes of the Buffalo game.  I'd venture a guess that there haven't been a lot of games that guy has played here in which he wasn't in pain.  I'm really going to miss Wilkins with the way he has stepped it up in Ric's absence.  Jon Smith will always be one of my favorite Bobcats.  Nick, what else can you say?  He's been a pleasure to watch and the growth in his game has been great.  Ric, man I feel bad for him.  It felt like his senior season was going to really be his time to shine and injury robbed him of it.  This has been an easy group to pull for and just genuinely like.

I wish Ohio was still in session so that these guys could get the best send-off as possible tomorrow.  As it is, I don't what attendance for this game will be like.

Would like to see the Ozone start chants of each of the seniors' names during pregame/game. Other crowd, please join in. I think every player's dream is to have fans chanting their name.*

*dreams also include championships, attractive women, fast cars, NBA contract, beating Miami

Lots of lasts tomorrow.

Nick, Jon, Travis, Ric, and TJ's last game at the Convo.
My last game in the O Zone as a student.

Among other things. Ready to make tomorrow a great day.

Ready for the Bobcats to roll. Set up for a nice finish in the MAC and off to Cleveland.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

Ohio academics may be out of session but the Ohio idea is never out of session. Can't wait to be at the Convo loud and proud tomorrow.

Just did the Saturday morning errands around town.  This place is fairly empt;y.  If you're in town and have nothing to do today, grab a friend and head to the Convo.  It's supposed to be 52, it's senior day and it may be the last day you can go anywhere for a few days with this next storm coming.  If you don't mind riding in a Smart Car, I'll even come pick you up.

Athens is dead because everyone did their "Day After Tomorrow" storm shopping last night. Kroger was a zoo.

An Ohio win coupled with an EMU loss would eliminate the Eagles from bye contention.

And if WMU -Toledo is not a sellout, I am going up there to yell at everyone.

Don't want to jinx us but we're 12-1 in Saturday games this season and 6-0 in MAC Saturday games.  The only loss was at Oakland.

I can't understand this team. I get the injuries. But to lose like this to Kent after beating them at their place by 10? Mo seems like a shell of himself. Nick isn't attacking like he once did. I don't think either men are First Team players anymore. I actually think Setty should start now, which I cannot believe I'm saying. Did our seniors decide together to collectively lose today? All of them but Travis were terrible. I know we can catch fire in the tournament but unless Kron loses we are a 5 or 6 seed and we could lose at home in first round.

It starts with the man who leads them and he's never been known as a master motivator. Managing adversity is not his strength.

JC didn't shoot 34% from the field and 54% from the line.  The best game plan is meaningless if the guys can't hit shots. And letting Kent hit 64% of their 3's shows our defense was lacking. Again, that's on the players and not the coach. Given the injuries we've had 19-10 isn't all that bad.

I was highly critical of JC's hire a few years ago and I am still not on board with his coaching ability. He is not a game coach and does not change up a game plan when it is not working.
Time for a change!

I'm not so sure about that, he's only the most successful coach in MAC history.  Groce had head scratching losses too.  Akron has lost several in a row, does that now mean Dambrot's a bad coach all of a sudden?

With all due respect Mark, on what do you base that fact ?
