Well, maybe. Some insight from the Sloan Conference, including everyone's favorite topic, momentum: http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/66319/everythi...

Beyond fascinating.....always believed in this one...

  • Why you're wrong about play-calling: According to Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, the most successful play Jeff Van Gundy ran while he was in Houston was simply setting a random screen and letting the players run the offense by themselves. The set plays were actually less efficient. Former NBA coach George Karl also added that one of the most valuable and underrated plays at the end of a game was simply gaining an offensive rebound.

I've always believed that the proper offensive system should promote constant free movement that eliminates the need for set "plays" beyond inbounds or other specific scenarios however that is probably partly the soccer guy in me.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I see a lot of "obvious" (therefore not much of a "story") and in general "hoo ha" in this.

Wrong about "Emotion" In FBall, and BBall for that matter, the TO's and "drives"  that result in scores are likely most often a matter of "field position" - In opponents territory or near in FBall, closer to the half court line in BBall than not - well "DUH"? Of course the team is "hyped up"!!!

Wrong about "most mistakes"? Rename this subject to "fast paced" and it reads a little different - eh?

Wrong about "blown calls" The writer does not even address the subject - other than to say they will be implementing a change next year (stuck his neck out on that one didn't he?).

Wrong about "rebounding"? After trying to find my way through his path of irrelevant logic - I am left with one thought - Ask Leon Williams about offensive rebounding and what matters (circa vs Beefs in MAC Tourney his Sr year).

Wrong about LeBron James? Then he proceeds to list King James as a leading example of exactly what he is trying to make a case for not being true.

The entire article is a load of useless crap!

My first thought when I saw the words I've placed in bold is that you were describing our offense against Kent State today.

Thanks. Yes, I agree.  Setty played with a lot of heart and was aggressive in taking it to the hole.  With our walking wounded brigade I think we need to play Setty, Willis, Coleman, and maybe some Wadly in the next few games.  Another poster said the same thing.  Give our injured guys a week to heal and then hope we can put together a healthy team for the tournament and make a run.  This team, when it's hitting on all cylinders, does have a lot of upside, but right now we are at a real low ebb.  Today's game was downright painful to watch, with only a few bright spots -- Setty being one of those.

I'm left with the impression you didn't understand it or read it that closely.

Counter point at will - that means specifics - not general non-committal statements

Yes, I meant Campbell.  In fact, I was thinking Campbell when my fingers typed Coleman.  My fingers apologize for the error!

Whatever.  Usual trying-to-grab-attention headline followed by nothing particularly interesting.

'Random' plays are, of course, guys who've played together a lot doing basically the same play, or variations of it.  That is, they know each others' skills and work them to good advantage.

Best such use:  the Knicks double-turkey play.

It may have been a called play or may just have happened when the players worked themselves (and the oppo) into the right spots on the floor.  But it wasn't random.  Most basketball players are pretty smart, certainly intelligent at the art/science of basketball.
