I don't see it happening. If I was Abreu, I would try to play in Europe. He has enough talent, he can make a way better living than he is now and I am pretty sure a team over there would overlook his conviction. Being fluent in Spanish, I would imagine a couple countries would see that as an extra benefit to picking him up...

I've seen crazier things happen.

Coach K.D. is the king of second and third chances, so don't be surprised if shows up in a Zip uniform next season.

Of course he wants to return to the team, that's probably where all his best buyers are

My question is more about his eligibility.  Doesn't he only have a year left?  Do they want to bring in a guy like him with just one year left?

I'm not sure that even Tark the Shark would touch him.

I could see an (overly?) empathetic couch offering a player with Abreau's past history of stupid choices and proven illegal behavior a second chance to rejoin a team under a clearly communicated set of Steps (conditions) and caveats.

Step 1: Rematriculate to the University.

Step 2: Full (24/7) conformance to all University and team academic, behavior, ethics, etc. rules

Step 3: Take advantage of the opportunity to join the basketball team that is often offered to all University students at the beginning of the next academic year and tryout as a walk-on (non-scholarship) player.

Step 4: Take part in the tryouts and earn a spot on the team.
Caveat 1:  Successful tryout candidates will be selected based on demonstrated basketball abilities, basketball IQ, coachability, etc. without regard to any past playing history with the team.
Caveat 2:  The tryout period playing assesment will be modified based upon the coaching staff''s estimate or "gut feeling" as to the probability that each candidate will continue to meet the Step 2 requirement for the duration of the academic year.  This estimate will include consideration of any proven past illegal or otherwise non-conforming behavior.

Step 5: Continue full (24/7) conformance to all University and team academic, behavior, ethics, etc. rules.

Step 6: (Reached only as a result of a step 5 failure.)  There will be no third chance opportunity.

Should Abreu follow this path and, thereby, rejoin the team, he could demonstrate remorse for past choices as well as a seemingly sincere desire to make partial amends his team its coaches and fans as well as the University as a whole.  Additionally it would actually give him something useful to say during his (presumably court ordered) opportunities to speak before audiences such as elementary school students.

CORRECTION:  He is quoted in the article that his appearance was not court ordered.

Diggs came back for this year after being dismissed for a year.  Granted, to my knowledge, Diggs never was convicted of anything like Abreu.  I hope he really has put this nonsense behind him.

This is a trial balloon in a long-term play by Abreu and Dambrot.  They are slowly raising Abreu's profile again locally to see how fans react.    He will be back on the team next year…unless he gets into trouble again. (And that's a very real possibility.)

I can't believe the idiots on Zips Nation are actually finding ways to justify and support his return. Felony Drug Dealer! Says a lot about that university and its followers.

I agree this a likely trial balloon - but disagree it is meant for the fans. They can't officially "axe" the initiative.

SO

"It started small and got larger......I just wanted to make some money to bring my parents....Found out I could get more and more things...:"

Talked about an ongoing biz that used US Govt mails and the like. Sentenced to 2 years and ended up with a suspended sentence.

Pretty good dance through the legal system. Basically got off with a record and not much else.

I think he is in a bit of denial stating that he did one bad thing and that offset the 20K good things. YOu don't do one bad thing on your way to a "drug arrest in March 2013 for being one of the biggest marijauana dealers in town" making "national news"....that is not one mistake .....that is an ongoing situation that you have to work at and make wrong  decisions day after day after day......minimizing that to "I made one mistake" is a very interesting take that is further bolstered by the diminishment of the punishment. ....really...if society does not much care why should he? Not talking about smoking weed or recreational usage here ...talking about busted with 5 lb, intent to distribute and the biggest chunk of Akron pot biz.

What a country.

I'm not really going to bash Akron for this.  While it's not a popular opinion, and I kind of wish I didn't have it:  If this had happened to DJ or someone of that level, I'd secretly be stoked if there was a chance they'd come back and play.

It's easy to sit here and talk about "class" etc....but I like winning games... and somewhere inside me, and I'd imagine inside a lot of posters on this board, I'd have no problem taking the chance on the kid and running with it.

And to be fair:  We do owe a large portion of a MAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament win to a kid whom we gave a third chance.

I suppose I didn't word that correctly.  I was wondering how many years of eligibility he'd have left?  Just one I'm thinking.  I'm personally indifferent on this specific scenario.  If this was Ohio, and this conversation was being had, I'd be leery.  It's one thing to forgive an athlete for a one time thing such as an assault charge at a bar, or DUI.  It's another to forgive something like this.

Abreu was a Junior last year, so he would have 1 year of eligibility remaining.

Got to complete those in 5 years. Next year or bust.

I spoke to a fan at the game last night and he indicated that KD wants Abreu back  because he "believes in second chances." I think it will happen. The fan also said that Abreu is in Akron now.

Second chances or maybe he does not have a lead on a PG for the coming years and realizes Bet is a bust. Buys him time on the recruiting trail.

I trust your source

That's really the name of the clinic?   Only in Akron . . . and maybe Youngstown  . . . at least in Ohio!

You're right. That is so obviously ripped off from the Shoot Basketballs Not Heroin Clinic held in November.
