Big East ....what a day.

It has been interesting watching Big East games today. Overtimes and physical play ruled the day. Looking at these teams from the eye of "we need to move conferences" is a bit sobering. Not sure if we could that we should. That is a big leap in talent and physicality. Full arenas with rabid fans.

Butler is going to have to upgrade. Their kids hung in there but got physically punished.. Nova is big and bad and well coached. .

Still can t hardly watch G TOwn as their style of play drives me nuts. Depaul is and someone we would beat handily along with some of the other bottom dwellers.

X is not in school but their student section was packed as was most of the arena. I think we would give X and St Johns a pretty good game though Stain is becoming a space eater and the X and St Johns guards are pretty good.

Big East goes pretty far west. Creighton has been tough. Marquette muddies up the game with their physicality. I have been wanting to see how they did with the new rules. They are very athletic and beat teams up last year. Not much in the way of ball skills or shooting skills.. Not sure if McDermott can hold them off down the stretch without a little help. They have had a good showing with the defense. Their D is pretty dialed in as a team. COntribuitions from others around the arc are impressive as Marquette brings 3 to McD.

The Blue Jay home crowd is very impressive. Turned out and BLUE. I looked and looked and do not see one sign of a red shirt or a giant N from the state school. Really happy to see that the BIG fans out that way do not find it necessary to display their colors on game night at the arena of another game they are attending. Same with Butler at Hinkle....no Red or Gold/Black in the crowd.

Not really trying to accomplish anything but found the day in the new Big East interesting to see how it is shaking out and wondered how we look in comparison. I like the MAC for now. We just need to get to dominating it instead of just being competitive

As always, great points Bornacatfan! As to Marquette, perhaps we match up well with them too? I say that, only because Ohio State went into Milwaukee and just spanked Marquette at Marquette's place several weeks ago. Up until OSU's win over Purdue yesterday, I think Ohio State's closest game was the one they played with Ohio in C-bus.

It's still a shock not to see Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Connecticut among others in this league. Without the football thing hanging over the league, it will probably be better in some ways, but it will never be the same for sure.

From the standpoint that they can not put the ball in the hole we match up...if they get physical and open the floodgates like Memphis did to us last year it would be a long day. They can score handily in transition on dunks and floaters. Their bigs are pretty good from the elbow but their shooting presence is spotty and sometimes non existant. Keeping in mind too that Creighton is a very good defensive unit.

In a way it's kind of a moot point, because I don't think Ohio is leaving the MAC to go anywhere...

But for the sake of discussion...while I agree, borna, that we are not ready for the Big East in terms of competition or attendance, there are other conferences in between...like the Atlantic 10 and the Missouri Valley. It wouldn't be as much of stretch to see Ohio being competitive and successful in those two leagues both on the court and in attendance.

I don't understand why Ohio fans constantly talk about moving to conferences that don't have football. It seems the only conference we would have even a remote chance of joining would be the AAC (or Con-USA which we wouldn't want to join).

Now that several other MAC teams have decided to up their efforts to make their basketball programs competitive I don't think we will need to go anywhere. For selfish reasons I would love to see us jump to the MVC but I know that's not going to happen ever because football is just too important to many people. But the league has made what appears to be several good coaching hires and the conference appears to be coming back from the dead. As Big Willy says, the only attractive realistic options aren't that attractive.

By the way, IMO the Big East is now what the ACC used to be before they decided that football was the way to go. I grew up an ACC fan and nothing was better than a conference that played a true round-robin schedule and was tough from top to bottom. I know the traditional rivalries are gone from the Big East but it is ripe to build some new ones. The Big East, ironically, was the conference that started the mega-conference craze and over-bloated itself. Now they have corrected the problem that they helped start and now the ACC and Big Ten are the overbloated behemoths. My old business partner is a Georgetown grad and he is ecstatic.

Seems like X is going back to the ways of old for this season. Tough inside with timely shooting rather than relying solely on the playmaking ability of one or two guys. Christon is a great guard, not as quick as Holloway or Lyons were, but he kind of reminds me of Romain Sato. And anything is possible inside with Stainbrook and Philmore.

There is absolutely no evidence that we are even considering changing conferences. Never has been.

But any analysis about that should include the effect on recruiting. That is, if we were in the ACC, for instance, we'd have more allure to recruits given the opponents we'd face and the TV exposure that we'd receive.
