Some Akron Students Get Replica MAC Champ Rings

I came to the Akron Coastal Carolina game with my Akron alum of a wife and before the game. While recognizing the MAC co-champs they announced that the students lined up on the baseline (about 12 of them) were being given replicas championship rings as they were the AK Rowdy members who had attended at least 10 Zip games last year. That's all it took was 10 games? If we did this in Athens, how many rings would they give away?

9 times out of 10 I think OUr school has the best promotions. Far better than what I see at away games. But that one is pretty cool.

(not too awful jealous though. I'm drinking an IPA from my Ohio Sweet 16 glass right now. Suck on that Akron)

I think it's a good idea...but my question is what constitutes "replica"? Are these cracker-jack box quality? Or close to the real deal?

If it's just a plastic look-alike, I'm not sure it's all that great.

I think Akron's Arena is the biggest part of their attendance problem.

I was at the Ohio @ Akron game last year. Packed house. My knees were hitting the people in front of me. The atmosphere is terrible. They don't even have a true student section.
They talk about selling it out before they can get a new arena. The JAR is the reason they don't sellout. That place is a joke.

Akron fans shouldn't take that as a knock. I am saying that if they built a legitimate arena, they could easily get 6,000 regularly. If they built a new arena, they should shoot between 7,000 and 10,000 IMO.

When we walked in they gave us a scratch off card, me not caring forgot about it until we were ready to leave when my wife scratched it. Yup, I won a Replica Mac Championship ring. If these are the same rings they gave the student section, the word cracker jack definitely popped into my head. It came in a little plastic bag that reminded me of a toy from a McDonalds Kids meal. It was a cool idea to give away rings though I must admit. But why the scratch off cards? The place only holds like 4500 people, I would think they could give one to everyone.

Speaking of the crowd... If that was a record number of Rowdies, call me surprised. The sections behind the baskets were mostly full, but only about a 5x5 section on one side were actually cheering in an organized fashion. I remember them being better than that.

Akron's problems with respect to fan support are legion, and few are related to the craphole JAR. They have the same Bucknut problem every Ohio MAC school faces, but they also compete with Cleveland pro sports for attention. Those casual fans can choose to drive 40 miles to watch the NBA or they can watch a MAC team play opponents like Coastal Carolina, who they probably don't even realize are a D1 team. Finally, for people in the region who just like college hoops, there are several choices, so they can't dominate the market for those fans.

I'm sure there are more reasons people ignore the Zips despite their success, but those are a few.

Most germane to this discussion, however, is the fact that unless a handful of very rich donors pony up the funds, there's no way in hell they're getting any kind of arena. The school is in dire financial shape, having built and improved the campus with a hope of spurring enrollment growth. Trouble is, enrollment has declined and they're firing teaching staff to cover the budget issues. Add in the bitter recent memory of tumbleweeds rolling through the new football stadium, and I don't see anyone stepping up to pay for a new arena. Akron is a great basketball team representing a sad, struggling school.
