Well - it was not called "Midnight Madness". But whatever OUr BBall first practice night team preview event was that we did a few years back was called - I sure wish we had one this year. I especially would like to see the dunkin' show this line up would put on.............

I get the general sense that JC is not into the "dog and pony show" sort of things that Groce was. I've heard that he was not a fan of the documentary TV show and that it is going away as well.

While it's nice (as fans) to have those extra things...at the end of the day, I just want results. And I can definitely appreciate his no-nonsense approach. The less distractions, generally the better.

But yes, dunk contest would be interesting!

Wins are what we all want, but I have to admit that I REALLY liked the documentary shows done in the previous seasons.  It was just a nice little half hour to look forward to that was all Bobcats.  I for one would really like to see them return.

I think a Midnight Madness would be nice as well.  Anything to promote the program and getting fans and alumni involved is a good thing.

I like to idea of  a "Midnight Madness" type of event, but the last one I attended during Homecoming weekend 3-4 years ago was pretty lame.  It was not called midnight madness, but it was the same concept.  I think having something like this during Homecoming weekend it a great idea, you can potentially get a good turnout of fans and alumni, but it needs to be done well enough that people want to come.

Groce was not too happy with the midnite madness but the guys wanted it and it gave precious extra minutes for him to have as a team working on things. The benefit was one or two extra practices . At the time the NCAA let you have an extra session or 2 if you had a midnite madness or similar.....plus it gave the air of a big time program and generated interest withthe student. IIRC it was tied to volleyball and football situations which got the campus rockin a lil bit and brought the different teams together as well as the student body at large.

I cannot remember who suggested this a few years back for OUr campus, heck maybe it was Groce. Setting up a court somewhere uptown and having anyone come and watch that wanted. I thought it was a crazy idea(still do), but now have seen how it works.

We were in Champaign last weekend, took in the Miami/Illinois beat down, and took in the Street Jam. (link here and video here) It was pretty cool. Thousands of people (but only hundreds of seats) crowded around, lights set up. Not much of a real practice, but had some dunks, 3pt contest, band/cheers/trivia/fun/corny stuff. Kids loved it. Seating was at a premium, and if you didn't know someone, or arrive >1 hour ahead, you were standing. But all in all it seemed like a big success. Still not sure if we could pull it off though.

Thanks for the link Ben.  I do think we could pull that off here.  Sure looked like a fun event.

I remember it. It was Coop and Co.'s freshman year. It was on the Friday of Homecoming weekend and it took place after Yell Like Hell, which took place after a volleyball match. I've not been a fan of Yell Like Hell, and I think others were bored by the time they got around to the basketball teams.. many people had left. Coach Randall even started yelling at people on the microphone to wake up.

Midnight Madness can work at Ohio, but it has to be done right. It doesn't even have to be midnight. After a homecoming volleyball match is fine. Ditch Yell Like Hell and involve the crowd more. Get a student judging panel for the dunk contest. How about a team challenge involving players and students (Team Stevie, Team Ricardo, etc.). How about a half court shot for free text books for the rest of undergrad?

And this ^ even better. More to marketing and building than Raising 2,000 seat prices and consistently Lowering 10,000 of them.

It was called Hardwood Hysteria, for the record.

They did this! The Dean of Students was also a judge.

They sort of did this! A game of Knock Out against the club team.

What was TOS stand on ostensible power forwards who favored fadeaway jumpers?

You're right, borna. I know in 2009 & 2010 they held it the Friday of homecoming week, and there also happened to be a volleyball game right before, and I was disappointed when I found they wouldn't do it in 2011...

'09 was especially cool because Pat Tafua, Thad Turner and others got to show some of their moves with the Dance Team!

Any thread which carries a mention of Patrick Tafua is totally solid.  Dude was (is) a great Bobcat.

Pairing it with Volleyball would be a great idea in my book.  Frankly, they should be introducing both the Men's and Women's basketball teams at some home football games right away in the fall to start creating the hype.

I suggested this on here a few years ago but was basically told how stupid an idea it was.
