Ohio University has seen an increase from 12,500 incoming freshman applications in 2011 to over 20,000 in just two years! This is an OU record... could this also be some kind of state/national record  for % increase as well.

http://www.athensohiotoday.com/news/ou-freshman-applications-top-k-for-first-time/article_3fe7d135-d81c-5913-8581-e8305c72add8.html

I think the classics in world religion tenure track people should take note.

If they are keeping admissions down to 4,000... of course it does. Incoming test scores will definitely increase

I was told about this a few weeks ago but at that time it was confidential so I couldn't post.  My first reaction, of course, was that the increase was due to the legion of students wanting to study in the Department of Classics and World Religions.  Some of you yahoos will probably think it has something to do with Sweet 16 basketball and two consecutive bowl wins in football. But, realistically we know that students don't make school choices based on such frivolous criteria.

That makes two of us.  They were finishing building the South Green when I applied and had all kinds of dorm rooms that needed filling.

How do you know this?  If there is a significant number of strong applications in the increased application pool, I see your point.  But if not...this increase in applications won't help the academic strength of the student population.

The real "marketing campaign" is all inclusive. It's students winning awards...the 110....Top 25's....sellout crowds...ESPN games, etc. I'd argue that seeing OUr school in action is much more compelling than some billboard in Toledo.

How do you know this?  If there is a significant number of strong applications in the increased application pool, I see your point.  But if not...this increase in applications won't help the academic strength of the student population.

I would expect that increased applications would have to help the academic strength.  The only way it can't is if all of the increase in applications are sub-par students.  Below is the 2011 Ohio University GPA/ACT/SAT admittance chart.  Just rough estimate based on the blue dots, but it appears around 15% of Ohio's 2011 applicants scored 30+ on ACT, 45% were between 24-29 on ACT, and 40% scored 23 or lower on ACT.

In 2011, there were around 12,500 applicants, so based on estimates above, let's approximate the following breakdown of applicants:

Tier 1: (30+ ACT): 1,875 Applicants
Tier 2: (24-29 ACT): 5,625 Applicants
Tier 3: (23 or below):  5,000 Applicants
TOTAL : 12,500

If 1/3rd of Tier 1 students actually enroll, 1/3rd of Tier 2 and then the rest of Ohio's freshmen are filled in by the Tier 3.  The 2011 freshman population might look close to this:

Tier 1 (30+ACT): 625 Freshmen
Tier 2 (24-29 ACT): 1,873 Freshmen
Tier 3 (23 or below): 1,402 Freshmen
TOTAL: 3,900 Freshmen

In 2013, assuming the applicants have same basic ACT percentages, then we could expect to see:

Tier 1: (30+ACT): 3,075 Applicants
Tier 2: (24-29 ACT): 9,225 Applicants
Tier 3: (23 or below): 8,200 Applicants
TOTAL: 20,500 Applicants

If 1/3rd of Tier 1 students enroll, 1/3rd of Tier 2 and remaining population is filled in with Tier 3, 2013 Freshmen class might look like:

Tier 1: (30+ACT): 1,024 Freshmen
Tier 2: (24-29 ACT: 3,075 Freshmen
Tier 3: (23 or below):  -74 Freshmen
TOTAL: 4,025 Freshmen

With a nearly 65% increase in enrollments in two years and only 3-4% increase in Freshmen on campus, the academic strength has to increase.  Otherwise, you're assuming the 8,000 more applicants are all in the Tier 3 level or all of the Tier 1/2 applicants decide to go elsewhere.

and some with better manners.  The two girls that sat behind me last night in Mem Aud for the Addams Family couldn't stop talking.  And by the way, it was a good show at half the price of what I would have had to pay in Portsmouth Monday night or Champaign tonight.  You've got to love the subsidizing of entertainment (sports and shows) by the fees and tuition of the OU student body.

This has to ding Akron's APR, correct?  It sounds worse than just saying he is going to finish over the next few years.  You were there for 4 years and completed a 2 year degree.  Seriously?  One would hope players would only be a semester away from graduating.

Doesn't the NCAA require progress reports based on progress toward a bachelor's degree not an associate's degree? Maybe I'm missing something, but how could you be making satisfactory progress toward a four-year degree and end up with only a two-year degree.  Maybe he isn't that far from his bachelor's degree but is just taking the AA or AS degree because that's the only one to which he is currently eligible.  I don't recall, though, any other athlete taking this route.  Maybe I just missed it.

There is also someone with a perfect score and perfect gpa who was wait-listed.

There must be a character issue. Family relations to Miami or Akron?

It is not uncommon for someone to be wait-listed or denied when the school is clearly not among the applicant's top choices, even with ridiculous academics/test scores. I knew a guy that scored a perfect on the MCAT and really wanted to go to osu for med school. When he was wait-listed, he had to call the powers that be and beg to be admitted because they just assumed that osu was his safety school and he really wanted to go to Hopkins, Stanford, etc.

Or at least that's the story he told. I always thought he was a self-absorbed asshat who probably annoyed his interviewers as much as he annoyed everyone else who ever met him.
