I'm just as surprised someone didn't get sick of it and sock him in the face. He has it coming.

He learned it from his old man who was a lunatic at Duquesne and Youngstown State.

This is the first "TOS to" thread in a long time that just might have legs.

Do you think he'd actually leave his digs at Newport Beach and the reasonable commute to his job to take a job in the Big Ten that's become a dead end position?

Well, Jeff, it's a step up in salary, prestige and on the East Coast so it meets all of his wife's criteria.  However, I get your point.  Mine was that it has potential for more legs than TOS to EMU or TOS to Memphis.

What were they thinking? How did the University President and the AD EVER think that not only would Rice not survive but themselves survive IF that video ever saw the public light of day? I think before the dust settles on this one it's going to be a threesome going out the Rutgers door.

Can't see him moving to southern California Jeff.  That house that he bought in Newport is an historic house that he got for a song.  The guy is very good at negotiating as evidenced by the last two contracts that he signed.

Exactly. Especially when the assistant that filmed it all mysteriously did not have his contract renewed. At that point, you'd have to KNOW that the video would have been seen somewhere.

The AD said he knew it would get out and knew people would be mad and "should be" mad. And yet that decision still got made.

Due to how things ended at New Mexico and some of the allegations (true or false), I think Fran would be the last person on earth Rutgers would hire in this situation.

My guess is they pry Danny Hurley away from URI. Knows Jersey basketball, and it's probably the top job in that state now that Rutgers is in the Big Ten and Seton Hall is in a watered down version of the Big East.

According to the news reports out here in N.J. the assistant didn't have his contract renewed because of a falling out with Rice over the assitant ,who is a former NBA player, making appearances at rival summer B.B. camps.

One thing that is upsetting to a lot of people out here (including me) is how R.U.'s A.D. handled the situation.

According to the papers,R.U.'s A.D. started his investigation into Rice last Summer. In Novemeber he was given the tape.
In December he suspended Rice for 3 games, fined him a total of $75000. (Salary +Appearance fees) and made him take anger management classes.
No new information has come out since then.
So either the A.D. screwed up in December by not firing Rice then or doesn't have courage to defend his position.
Either way the consensus is he should go.

As far as a new coach,a lot of R.U. people want to try to get Villinova's coach.
Hurly is also popular, but people are concerned that he only has 1 year of head coaching experience at a small school.

So he could go to a school where football is top dog and the basketball program is a graveyard for coaches. Much less pressure.  That's what all basketball coaches want.

In other news, Ball State wants Tom Crean.

In the wake of the NCAA's involvement in the Penn St scandal, they should go full throttle after Rutgers.  This is a direct failing of the athletics dept to maintain control over their coaching staff.  I find it hard to believe that the AD himself, and maybe others in charge at Rutgers, didn't once watch a practice where this kind of crap went on.  And the punishment they meted out when it was brought to their attention by the assistant -- a fine, a 3-game suspend and anger management courses -- is completely inadequate and total BS.  Physical and emotional abuse shouldn't be tolerated; Bob Knight got canned at Indiana more than 20 years ago for a whole lot less than that (of course, he also had personal problems with IU's president and others, but he never did anything as egregious as this, as far as I know).  They obviously aren't looking out for the best interests of the young men who they've been trusted to care for.  The NCAA should step in and hit Rutgers hard with sanctions.

Would people please stop comparing this to Penn State already?? The things that occurred in State College are immeasurably  worse than throwing a basketball at a college-aged kid. Not at all supporting what Mike Rice did...but it's not even in the same conversation as PSU.

You are right. The situation at Penn St. was much worse. I don't think anyone would disagree. But there is a common thread of institutional control over the coaching staff and how coaches are dealt with -- especially when it comes to abuse.
