Before his time is done --- with a certain margin of error.

I expect him to be him a free agent signee for a pre-season training camp where he will be one of the last cuts that team has to make.

From there he will play either in the D-league or internationally where he will have to grow into his man's body and develop the strength he needs.

Whatever coach or analyst comments on him will use the word "winner" when describing him.

He will most likely make his NBA debut as part of a 10 day contract

I'm not saying he will make a roster next year although if he lands in the right spot it will happen next year....definitely in the next 2-3 years.

People just don't understand how good he is at making people around him better...he didn't have that type of talent in Athens. That's why so many shots were terrible decisions from him -- a bad decision for him is at least the equal of anything the talent around him could come up with for the most part -- it's just the truth.

If he and Trent were on the same team at the same time Ohio would have been a top 15 team at least regardless of who else was on the team within the time span of Trent's run til today.

All I needed is to watch him with other top competition in college like he's doing in today's all star game.  Anyone who knows the type of posts I make will attest that I'm not an Ohio homer.

I simply tell the truth and invite anyone to argue against my basketball knowledge.

P.S.  Marshall offers nothing offer than shot blocking, he'd better hope he's the 5th scoring option on whatever team he is on the floor with until if and when he gets stronger.

I hope you would be correct, but his inconsistent outside shot, and his own acknowledgment that he was dominated at the Chris Paul camp provides some very strong counter truth.  Agree he'll be invited to a camp and will impress.  To be called an NBA player is intoxicating, but Europe provides a very lucrative future for him - much more so than bouncing around the D league and grabbing an occasional 10-day contract.

Gotta agree with cc.  EVERYBODY in the NBA can play.  They only take 25 or 32 or whatever the nuumber is a year now.  Size and inconsistent shooting are the negatives.  Everything else he is right on.  Hope he proves me wrong!

I don't know that Cooper will be drafted, but I will argue he should be.  99% of 2nd round picks never do anything. Cooper would shame most of these guys.. I am growing more and more confident a team will take a shot on him in round 2..

I've seen crazier things happen.

How many people from that game are on an NBA opening day roster? DJ is summer league fodder. Hope he makes it, but it's unlikely.

I could see a scenario in which Cooper works very hard to develop his game in Europe and ends up getting a look in the NBA later in his career a la Chris Copeland. But as of now, Cooper isn't strong enough, quick enough, or a good enough shooter to play in the NBA. We all saw how Treadwell and Marshall took him out of the game with their length; in the NBA, point guards have to be able to beat big men off the dribble in the pick and roll. If he does end up in the NBA, it'll be as amuch different player than the one we've watched so far.

Seems like a quote from my favorite movie is appropriate for this thread:  "Always with the negative waves, Moriarty."

He should at least get a shot at the summer league.  I hope he catches on with a team here.  I'm not sure Europe would be good for him with a family to support.

I saw this on an NBA draft chat with Chad Ford a month or so back. Thought it was interesting.

I'm sorry to tell you this but you don't know what you're talking about...you just don't. (and yes I know you will be rooting for him just as much as all Bobcats fans will be...you're just selling him short)

Being on an NBA opening roster is pretty much completely the opposite of what the initial posting was about.

I don't mean to single you out because most people who weighed in on this also don't get it.

The comon basketball observer can tell who out runs or out quicks the opposition.  Even still who out leaps or out shoots or out hustles the opposition.

Very very very very few can see who outhinks the opposition(without being told by a commentator/analyst).

The players that see the game in seemingly 4 dimensions and not just 3. That is the singularly most advantageous attribute to have.  It is what distinguishes a basketball player from someone who plays basketball.

To the others who wish to speak on inconsistent shooting.  Ask Rajon Rondo or Ricky Rubio about inconsistent shooting from the point guard position.

Those two outthink their competition.....they also seem to collect steals and rebounds with only Rondo having excellent leaping ability.

Shooting is by far the easiest area to improve when it comes to skills at a later age.

It also means at least half of his jump shots will be uncontested since teams will invite him to shoot as compared to D.J,'s future teammates.

He needs to get stronger so he can finish in traffic at the basket and to fight through screens.

That's why he won't go straight to the NBA (again barring his landing in a very perfect situation right from the start)

It's also why he will be in the NBA at some point.

Yeah - he could have easily had 10 more assists today if the players he was dishing to had more timing and feel for his game w/some more practice time together. I have always egged on Reg for his hands, not securing the pass clean from DJ. Today I saw a lot of top NCAA talent not able/ready to grab/control the hot DJ dime tossed their way.................

My being taken seriously is not my concern.

You speak as if others who would not learn because their emotions get in the way is a short coming of mine.

Am I supposed to act like we're all tied in the basketball knowledge department so  I will be taken more seriously?

DJ will have a very good shot more so than an Armon Bassett because yes DJ makes EVERYONE around him better...he can and has hit the open shot and honestly what NBA team needs him to actually score more than that unless its transition? Put him with the Miami Heat coming off the bench even..WOW..

"I know what I'm talking about", I'm telling you I'm right,"  is always a hard argument to win (even if you are more than a common basketball observer).  But it is a safe route to take when hedged with, "even if it doesn't happen right away."  It is a good route to take when everyone on the other side hopes THEY are wrong.

Cooper certainly has great vision and anticipation which makes others on the court better.  But, "long" defenders gave him difficulty.  His shooting gives him a challenge.  His decision-making needs improving. His strength is an issue, and even he (the 4 dimension thinking point guard) acknowledges he was schooled when up against elite competition at Paul's camp.  We'll see.  It is disturbing that a number of draft write ups don't even mention him.  He's earned a shot and almost all of the point guards coming out have warts.

He had a tough time guarding Alex Abreu.  Cannot see him even denying an average guard like Raymond Felton from getting into the paint at will.  He isn't strong or fast enough to defend NBA point guards.  He cannot get by college guards easily.  He has to be a pick and roll player, which he is really, really good at.  It's the defensive side of the game that will  hurt him.

We aren't all tied in basketball knowledge. Some people actually think Cooper as he is now is a NBA player. Don't give me this "if he gets bigger, stronger, smarter and shoots better in 2-3 years" trash either, because, well hundreds if not thousands are in the same boat all over the world. You can't hedge your proclamation that he will play in the NBA like that. He is either in or out now, and then reevaluated as opportunities arise.

Rondo gets away with not being able to shoot because he is significantly better at every single thing Cooper does, and he has a 6'10" wingspan. Meanwhile, Rubio is 6'4" and has been playing against top competition for years. By all means though, let's point to them as examples that you can make the league without being an excellent shooter.

I must say though, it is convincing when you say "will be," and then hedge your bet in the very first sentence. The way you wrote the thread, you really can't be wrong. Smooth work.

On another note, are people really getting this hyped over a college All-Star game? Very few set plays, college rules, non-compatible teammates...no scout took the game all that seriously. Judging by the media coverage, the scouts might have been lacking in general. This past All-Star game is really the only time he has shined in a non-Ohio setting since being in college, so it has to be what people are all of a sudden trying to point to.

Is it better to be a star overseas or the 13th guy on an NBA team?

Kind of like the "Would you rather lose in the first round of the NCAA tournament or win the NIT?" sort of question.

The thing is, there is a big middle ground between being the next Rondo or Rubio, and never making the NBA.

I think a much more realistic comparison for DJ is someone like Scott Machado. He want undrafted out of Iona, but played well enough in the d-league this year to get a call up with the Rockets. He has appeared in 6 games this year with an average of 3.5 mpg. I could see DJ following a similar path.

I'm not really comparing him to those guys either, but they were used as examples for guys who make the league while not being solid shooters.

Seeing both Machado and Cooper play, I'd take Machado slightly over Cooper in a college game, with a more significant gap at the NBA level. His game is much tighter, he's a better shooter and rebounder, passing is probably similar and most importantly (when other things are equal to a degree), he is bigger and stronger.

Even if Cooper wants to put on more weight, I just don't see him being able to.

he'll be in the NBA summer league. no shame in that. he'll make 6 maybe 7 figures in europe if he decides. he could also make a d-league team.

You have to be an ESPN insider to look at this, but it's ESPN's draft profile of D.J. They rank him 46th at his position and 228th overall.

There's not much more to it than that except to say his strengths are that he is "super quick," "excellent penetrating" and "good at creating for others," while his weaknesses are "underdsized" and "poor shot selection/turnover prone."
